"Why are you guys so hell bent on helping some birds, you know what it doesn't matter as long as I don't get set on fire this time I'm fine with whatever."
"We're hell-bent on helping some birds for one reason: because the alternative is helping some beavers."

All right, as of this turn, I've already got enough letters for a spell that does what I want. But I feel like with one more letter, I could do better: make it more artistic, more inspired.

I'll keep the tracker on, mostly for myself so I remember how long I have to get this done. It's always possible that I might roll too low and will have to compose another spell.

Question: does taking a letter out of an object change it in any way?

Trade yyU for the two e's.

Go to the town's marketplace and steal an m from there, using the crowd's bustle to cover my actions.
I mean, there's gotta be at least one m in the marketplace.

"Huh. Do the Cuckoos have a leader? Someone I can negotiate with?"
Accept the Dove job.

UPD: "Oh, by the way, boss. I've left a small surprise in the Crab territory. You could tell the Macks' intermediary that one of the Crabs' humanoids got hypnotized to go postal on his own gang. They'll probably throw in a bonus when it happens, if you warn them ahead." And be far more likely to employ Gershom if they ever need another service like that. You can never have enough clients. "I have no idea when, though. Make it clear the timeline can stretch from days to months, until he sees that perfect moment for doing the most damage."

"Allow me to remind you, Mr. Itch," Gershom said, just as meaningfully, "That if any of this company's employees are caught by the police, all of our identities will be compromised. Would you trust a fox to keep your secrets under pressure?"

"By 'find him', I meant the fox, not Bob. None of us three could carry my spellbook, and Bob is in no shape to follow us into Crab country."
Gershom glanced at the assortment of items in the toolbox and forced himself to tear his eyes away from the shiny, shiny chrome.
"Makeshift weapons? Not my thing. My beak is my sword, my wings are my shield. In less poetic terms, they suffice for anything short of a gunfight."

"Hmm. I don't have a spellbook on me right now. Bob's carrying it and he's in the hospital. We'll need to get it from him first if you want any magic to happen."
Gershom preened a little before continuing.
"That said, I'll consider getting the fox out if you have a way to find him." Or her? Gershom had trouble figuring out those mammals' genders sometimes. Not that it mattered to him much.

Hmm. Still not the letters I was looking for.

That was cool! Let's not do that again.
Instead, go to the market and buy a pair of 'e's. Roll to bargain, so I get them as cheaply as possible.

"Sauermann. But Sourman is close enough."
Gershom glanced at the cat suspiciously, wondering if the extra ten monies were just a ruse to get him to come into its lunging range. Probably not. The cat seemed to be in a merciful mood right now.
"So, some people need convincing that a protection racket on a couple pigeons isn't worth their time? Yeah, I think that's my profile. I'll need info on them, though. Particularly why those pigeons won't just pay the racketeers."

Get more info on the Dove job.

UPD: After I have the information, follow Oscar and Lenora on their mission to get a fox out of the cops' claws. Small critters to the rescue!

It occurred to me today that the old practice of governments selling sinecures isn't very different from the modern system of public finance through government securities (besides the obvious difference in ostentation and the security's lifespan). To modern eyes one seems obviously corrupt, while the other is viewed as being essentially a beneficial public service. This isn't a serious comment on policy, I just think it's funny.
*HmH gestures!*
Rise, ye old post, I have questions to ask.

Well, more like one question. I just don't get the analogy you made.
Sinecures are corrupt not because they sell political power and the gains that come thereof, but because after a few decades or centuries of sinecure inflation, they end up implicitly encouraging the buyer to engage in corruption: if they do their job by the book, they will simply never make the investment back.
Whereas government securities... well, they give you the same amount of returns regardless of your actions(unless you manipulate the markets using your power as an official, which, unlike corruption, is the sort of crime that would make Mr. Chrysoprase powerful people very upset with you), so they don't really increase the amount of government corruption all that much.

Granted, I only know about govenrment securities from what little I've read, so maybe there's some kind of a catch in this practice that I have no idea about. Am I missing something?

Ah, screw it, I'm jumping on the necrotic, shambling bandwagon.

There once was a wagon from Mountainhomes
Which met a young dragon called Ruthlessforce
And being quite flammable
Its fate made for a parable
To the fact that our fears make us scuttle

Go to one of the fighting arenas and steal a few unused letters from the fighters once the duel is over.
(Or fighter, singular, depending on what kind of a duel it is.)

I distinctly remember magma showers having been used to do the same, if you have no high-temperature biome available. You just need to make sure they aren't wearing anything flammable while taking the shower.

This video suggests that yes, magic will be procedurally generated.

Gershom tilted his head at their boss. The cat was asleep. And sleeping sophonts were supreme subjects for suggestion, if you did it right.
"Hold on, I have an idea-"
Then he saw the field mouse crawl up right next to the cat's maw and start bopping it in the nose, while the badger went straight for the cupboards.
"...Nevermind. I'll go, uh, check the perimeter."

Fly out of the building and perch on one of the second-floor windows so that our esteemed employer has time to release his righteous rage at being rudely roused by an excruciatingly edible morsel of mentally fortified flesh.
While I'm waiting for wanton murder to commence, use my Mind to remember the spells I've read from my mental spellbook.
Which I have probably read before, and which is probably in Bob's possession right now. And since my Mind is 4, I think I have at least a chance of eidetically recalling the contents of the book.
Once I have at least one spell, come back into the office. Cautiously, ready to run the moment I realize I have no idea where the cat is lurking.

Wagons are notoriously suicidal. They scuttle themselves the moment their drivers get distracted by something, whether it's a dead body by the side of the road or a dead body attacking them.
