DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Killing bedridden nobles?
« on: March 21, 2010, 04:26:54 pm »
If you don't mind wasting about an hour or two of time and want something ironic, I recommend making a 2x1 pit with a silver hammer in a weapon trap and flushing him down there. Whenever he passes out, he sets off a trap and gets hammered. Thanks to silver's damage modifier, he will not die easily.
If you mean "best" in "most effective" sense, fire a ballista at him or simply lock the door. You may also try cave-ins, but I'd leave them for not-bedridden nobles.

Dwarf Fortress: It may kill your time, rape your mind, deface your morals and leave you in a room full of miasma, but you'll still be ecstatic.

Hey, blinding people is risky. You either have to use a naked goblin wrestler or a sparring partner with a sword. Guess who will kill you more likely.

Nevermind, goblins are better.

Doomedturmoil, the... Woman of Tests? Pretty straightforward.
Look for its gender at legends.

There is a brighter side. Unprotected sparring with razor-sharp swords may result in more slashed out eyes. Which result in blind dwarves. Which are perfect as siege operators, because they are uninterruptible.

Tested with parties and assignment, it works. But not every time these dwarves step on a plate, so be careful with magma showers and the like.

While testing I discovered that, well applied, it is a great way to train dwarves' swimming skill:
Code: [Select]
Z:
OOOOOO
OΩ#^L.
OOOOO>

Z-1:

OOOOOO
~~~OOO
~OOOO<
~~~~X~

O - wall
Ω - statue
# - grate
^ - pressure plate(linked to grate)
~ - 7\7 water
> - downstairs
< - upstairs
X - floodgate(open by default)
L - lever(linked to floodgate)

Try it, you will laugh your entrails off your wounds. The dwarf you assign the statue to will run like a squirrel in a cage. And you can make it a drowning chamber just by pulling the lever.

UPD:
Dwarves dodge from the bridge sometimes, changed it to grate.

Puck, your idea with statue is great. A simple and easy automation.
I foolproofed it a bit and got rid of flowing water:

OOOOO
OS#^D
OOOOO

O - wall
S - statue
# - floor grate with a fall below
^ - pressure plate linked to a grate
D - door

Dwarf opens a door and passes through a pressure plate onto a grate. Pressure plate activates, grate opens, dwarf falls to whatever doom you prepared for him, pressure plate resets, grate closes. You may want to replace a grate with a retractable bridge if you need to hide something below from a dwarf's eyes.

UPD:
Tested both grate and bridge with recruits, it works. Don't know about parties, but if it worked in your trap, it will work in mine as well.

UPD2: The same construction may be used with atom smashers.

Does he like fish sticks?  ;D

Anyway, if you need a simple semiautomatic caging device, here it is, almost a simpliest one:

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: How to achieve greatness with this dwarf?
« on: January 02, 2010, 03:14:18 am »
Assign him to a ballista and tape it for DFMA. Blind dwarves don't get interrupted ever, so he would be great as a siege engineer. You would want to make an arrow collector for ballista arrows around him too, because, you know, guy is blind and may eventually shoot in an unusual direction.

I just burned to death a female crossbowman named "Muthro Grasplesson the Craterous Lashes of Bridging". She had 306 kills and wore 164 pieces of decorations. By decorations I mean earrings(50 earrings, exactly), crowns, rings and bracelets, all made from bone and leather of those she has killed in the battles, all equipped.
Screens of her dying moment:

Saves of her alive(1N of player), dying(look in announcements) and save with legends after she died.

Give him a shooting gallery with elves. Bonus points if elves are currently at airport trade depot and he uses ballista. Extra bonus points if he is accompanied by other terrorists siege operators.
Then look if he shot over heads too much for just missing. If so, he is an elf sympathizer and must trade at depot too. If not, gift him that shooting gallery and make him a Trader of your fort at springs. Every time elves come, he will gain more and more experience of elven deaths, which results in more "dying elves" engravings.
