DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Strange and Funny Ocurrances
« on: June 21, 2009, 09:02:20 pm »
I just noticed that one of the gods that my dwarves worship is named.... Sarek!

For those who don't get the reference, Sarek is Spocks father, from Star Trek. The diety himself though is definetly dwarven, not vulcan and represents mountains and caves.

The RNG ended up making a real name, heh.

Okay, I'm trying to embark in a hot/borderline scorching desert region with streams running around and magma pools/pipes scattered about. I tried to embark in one part of that region and found it infested with hippos and carp, so I tried again further south. It's the same region, but a different stream I think, or maybe I really am downstream on the same one. Anyway, I embarked on an area where two streams met and I found that there was 14 or so pages worth of hippos, milkfish, carp, some stingrays thrown in, and the usual camels (of which there are only 6 camels).

SO..... do I abandon or what? I have just embarked on the area and I want to set up a fort there, but not sure. I know I could use marksdwarves on the fish, but the wiki says that hippos are as dangerous ingame as the real ones.

Edit: Just to clarify, the milkfish and stingrays I'm not too worried about, but we all know the reputation of carp.

Here is a crude (emphasis on crude :P ) diagram of where my dwarves are, the o is the wagon and the rest roughly shows the two streams. The horizontial one is at a higher elevation than the first, about 8 levels or so. Theres already dead carp at the bottom of the waterfall (had accidentially unpaused a second). The waterfall is bound to kill some of them as I don't think a hippo would survive the fall intact.

So if I build a well over some saltwater, the dwarves will use it as if it was freshwater?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Bedrooms: Optional?
« on: June 21, 2009, 02:17:34 pm »
Bedrooms can also keep dwarves from sleeping in places where they shouldn't. Like for example, I had a dwarf (was a hauler I think, don't remember exactly) who fell asleep right on a channel designation line which the miners had already started on. I thought the miners were going to end up channeling under the guy but the noise may have alerted the dwarf when they were getting close and he/she got out of the way.

Sounds like a good method to try without using the reveal utility.

The flashing gets annoying on the eyes though.

I can actually believe that dwarves would be masterful enough with steel to make stainless steel.  Having steel mugs, plates, utensils, pots, pans, etc. is believable.

However, iron, copper, brass, bronze, tin, nickel, silver, gold, platinum, etc. are also acceptable metals to use for cookware and vessels to hold consumables.  Just as long as they're not drinking moonshine from a lead radiator, I'm pretty certain that dwarven constitution is stout enough to handle trace metal consumption just fine.  In fact, I can easily believe that they could floss their teeth with wire solder and be just fine.

Yea, considering that they don't appear to suffer from liver problems or get fetal alcohol syndrome.

Bet we can't wait for advanced dwarven personalities to come out. We could be seeing some really warped ones like the two mentioned earlier in this thread.

Also, someone in another thread posted that their DM made friends with only children and had recently ordered a cage. We all knew the Dungeon Master is suppoused to be crasy, but a pedo? It's a good thing we don't have child abuse programmed into the dwarves.
There may be a more innocent reason for it - if you're good at keeping all your dwarves busy, they may not have much chance to socialise, except for nobles and children.

True.

At most, you should plan the entrance area so that you can get the essentials (food storage, the farm, still, and whatever else you want) set up quickly.

I've changed my mind on placing noble rooms for example when I hit some valuable ore.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Help, Giant Bat!
« on: June 21, 2009, 01:00:01 pm »
Is it a tamed giant bat? I know there's a bug (or feature rather) involving tamed creatures who have killed dwarves before they got tamed and so, they will still attack your dwarves (and the dogs I think.)

He did strand extracting with a bogus reaction.

Or that, I'm going to fix the wiki page since it has strand extractor under the stuff that have a chance for a mood to hit, but it's a non-moodable skill.

Edit: nm, should pay a bit more attention to what I'm reading I guess.

I suppouse I should be drafting more of my immigrants into the army, I always find myself with more dwarves than I have possible jobs.

Not to mention that there is no way to level up a dwarf to legendary strand extracting. There is a slim chance that a fey mood will hit one, but that chance is incredibly slim, less than one percent. Although I think using Dwarf Companion, you can tweak the mood to make it give legendary strand extractor.

nm, misread the wiki, it's a non-moodable skill.

If you have any bridges and it's linked up, use it to try and whack the thing when it walks on one. Provided it's a drawbridge since a retracting one is no good against a flying creature. If you do it right, you may be able to atomsmash it.

So, does it matter whether it's legendary in work skills or does legendary in anything count?

Anyways, that kid must do a hell of alot of partying or something.

Wierd, the graphics shouldn't be giving you problems.

Maybe check the graphics folder for duplicates? Only thing I can think of immediately.

Since it's Mike Mayday's mod, maybe he would know something about it.

Edit: Does vanilla DF work on that computer? Just asking and it may actually be helpful to know here.
