So, Labor Secretary Acosta has resigned over the epstein plea deal furor. Trump is going to have what, 20 acting directors/secretaries in major positions now. I wonder if it's even constitutional to have that many acting directors/secretaries at once, not to mention the other issues that come with the acting status.

Given that sailing ships tend to follow wind patterns (they don't have to, but sometimes 'path of least resistance'), I'd say no.

'Donald Trump injects numbers with crack cocaine, says numbers "higher than ever". Mike Pence denies comment'

*then Mike Pence gets injected with crack cocaine and gets swirly eyes*

Honestly, I'd be more worried about the Republicans poisoning policy than the Russians screwing with it. Especially given that the Republicans are doing it on a much larger scale and is far more consequential.

Non-viable as an economic unit because the UK keeps it that way or because of the combination of resources? Just wondering.

Or maybe nonviable in the sense of most US states being non-viable as an economic unit because of both the combination of resources and because it's so connected into the economic network of the rest of the country.

The thing though is that something like 80% of it (forget the actual statistic, but it's something north of 75%) of the illegal immigration isn't from people illegally crossing the borders, that's just the most visible part, it's from people overstaying their visas. So, while Trump is focusing on the most visible, most amygylda triggering, portion of it, the larger problem is getting ignored.

What's really needed instead of just trying to 'deport all illegals', which just kicks the crisis point can down the road, is wholesale reform of the immigration system. Unfortunately, Congress can't seem to figure out a way, both in part because the loudest conservative voices yell foul whenever theres even a whiff of 'amnesty' (whatever that means anymore) and scuttle the whole thing and because polarization.

@wierd: As enigmatichat says, you're dealing with large numbers of people, so, in order to do that, you'd have to move a good chunk of people out of their own country to even marginally affect the census beyond a rounding error. It might work on a country with a smallish population, but unless it's a massive operation that is on conspiracy theory levels of complexity, it's just going to get lost in the noise of all the other factors.

@EH: Theres accurate data and then theres presenting said data accurately.

That feeling when devolved powers are so crippled by local politics that Westminster has voted in favour of deeply divisive issues which every Northern Irish politician voted against. Not only is this a pointed fingers-up to devolution, it incentivises Sinn Fein's continued refusal to play political ball in Northern Ireland.

Well done, Westminster. Once again your chronic inability to understand Northern Ireland has been displayed. Bravo.

Sounds like a pretty good reason to seccede or join into RoI.

Really? Couldn't he at least waited until the guy finished his speech to make his actions unnecessary? Talking is a free action, so its not like there was any reason to steal his thunder in the middle of his heroic speech.
His actions were always unnecessary though.
I mean, I don't think you really deserve to make a heroic speech if the only reason you are making one is because you forgot a basic fact of the universe (clerics can dispel magic) or because you forget the basic composition of your team (aka, that you have magic users at all).
Neither of those are really good enough reasons to deserve a heroic speech in my opinion especially since (as talking is a free action) he could have just asked if anyone had a way to get through the barrier instead of just forcing himself through.

Rule of Dramatic in storytelling though.

It's "the Northern Irish," not the "North Irish." But I doubt anyone really cares, so meh.

Anyway, around 30000 people cross the border for their work daily. Trepidation concerning a 'hard' border is understandable from the likes of them.

I initially had it as 'North Irelanders' before submitting the post but changed it to Ireland and didn't think about putting the 'the' in. Don't know why I started writing it initially that way and ended up not completely fixing it in backtracking.

Having a few weeks time is better than having days or barely being prepared at all and the contingency plans will buy time as well. That's the 'controlled glide' part, though it's still up to the government to figure things out before time runs out.

For the border checks, okay, fair enough. I've read plenty about North Irish not wanting to have the physical border checks back (for various reasons, nearly all connected in some way to The Troubles) and that the border areas became prime targets for IRA attacks, but the primary no-no seems to be a border (even if it's just a trade border and not a de jure one) between NI and the rest of the UK. It's something that's going to have to be dealt with on the fly because a no-deal looks inevitable and nobody's happy with the currently proposed systems.

Back to various political news, looks like Tom Steyer will jump into the race, though it sounds more like a gimmick/stunt. Then again, didn't Trumps candidacy start off as a sortof gimmick/stunt?

This is interesting, CNN is going to conduct a live draw for the qualification for the second set of debates. While the transparency is a good thing, I just hope they keep it all business.

Politico article gives some context to it. Looks like the fact that NBC took heat over doing it offcamera led to CNN deciding to be transparent where NBC wasn't. Unless CNN planned on being transparent in the first place, but either way, doesn't change the fact that NBC took heat over not being transparent.
If there are 24 candidates, why not have 3 debates of 8, or 8 debates of 3? Rather than leaving some of them out?

I've thought that myself about having a set of three debates, but I don't know the DNCs reasons for not going that route. A good deal of it is likely logistical.

Except those extrapolitical declarations aren't working. There was some talk about technical/technological solutions, but they were all 'No way, the technology doesn't exist yet or it'd take too long'. Come on, have they ever heard of IRFID tags and stuff? They should be able to figure out some sort of technical solution with current tech if they actually try.

@Th4DwArfY1: There still could be a political collapse of apocalypic proportions, especially if they fail to decide on deal or no deal and go into a general election. As for nation-crippling arrangement, both sides see the others option as nation-crippling.

Still, the UK has been preparing for a no-deal for so long that I read something about warehouses getting full. So, when it does come, it'll likely end up being more of a controlled glide 'crash through' rather than the free-fall chaos scenario people fear.

Don't they have like minefields and shit around A51? Y'know, to keep the lizard people from esacping easily?

Given that they have to be able to move to places on the edges, I seriously doubt they have minefields.
