I don't need nor want your stinking steel balls.
Icidentally, "Stinking Steel Balls" would be a great band name.

This thread has reached its apex. Nothing better than this will ever happen.

It sounds like a surreal pyramid scheme, but instead of paying up you pay sideways...
So it's actually a Great Wall of China Theme.

I have a sneaking suspicion it's already been done.
Then the song must be found.

I've recently come across a calculator for gridsizing.

Yeah, Helvetica wouldn't be my first choice either, nor would I choose blue. It looks too much like Facebook, to me. But I'd probably end up with something like umber and Baskerville, so take my advice at your own discretion.

Everything seems large to me too, but I don't suppose economy of space is particularly necessary here.

DF General Discussion / Re: Post Merge Question
« on: May 11, 2010, 02:07:56 am »
Except, 31.04 (the merge version), includes a lot of changes that might have changed values in the raws. people have been reporting that updating the raws only works if they have not been re-ordered (smelting iron requires 3 copper bars and other randomness).

So it will likely work, but no guarantee until it is tried.

Hmm this is something that has been confusing me a little...  could anyone clarify for me...

I've read that the raws have to brought across with the save files, so does this mean that the game copies and changes the raws from their vanilla state itself when it's running?
If this is the case, and if the raws ever need updating, wouldn't this break save compatibility every time?

I'm sure I've got the wrong end of some stick on this though.
No, the raws for a world stay unchanged. He'd probably just forgotten about that.

Just skip the swords all together and go full out axe.  Works wonders.  One legendary axeman walks into a slew of goblins, the goblins all pile on and limbs just go flying out like a blender.  My legendary swordsman take a lot longer to kill with.
Swords have a better chance of stabbing deeper and hitting something vital, though, making them better for big things such as megabeasts. Spears are even more better for this purpose, so ideally, you have a squad with axes and one with spears, and send them where they're best off.

DF General Discussion / Re: Dwarf fortress update for mac?
« on: May 10, 2010, 04:09:21 pm »
I'm tempted to answer "never" to the whole question of DF on Mac. We've been waiting for full months after the PC users got DF.
That would be a false answer. There's no hurry to support compatibility for people who insist on buying computers that are not compatible with most programs. Presumably, if you cared that much, you could set up a windows box somehow. If you can't, well... people with no computers aren't supported either. Being poor (or cheap) is recognized as having issues. Nevertheless, there will be a Mac compatible version long before there is a version for those who cannot afford any computer at all.

double posting here: does it already affects deity names?
Yes. You can dig up the thread about interesting deity names on the Dwarf Mode Discussion board for some particularly clear examples of this, if you feel like digging.

Alrighty, so I shall. Actually I think I posted on that, heheh. Something about a super llama god that was associated with pretty much everything. I never noticed the correlation between spheres and the actual naming, though. Toady's a step ahead of me.
Yeah, there's a handful there with long names where all or most parts stem from the same sphere.

Combat would involve selecting groups of troops by dragging a box around them, and right-clicking on a target.
You know, that would be actual improvement.
Except that when not killing things, they would stand in place doing absolutely nothing, and would not require food or water. Nor would they spar, sparring and training would be cut entirely, or abstracted as a little bar that fills up at the barracks. When it fills, a soldier pops out.

I like my squad-based kill orders just fine. Except for the bugs, but they'll be gone before too long.

Now, while Dwarf Fortress would never be made as a AAA game, something with superficial similarities could exist. Well, let's see...

It'd be in all 3d graphics, of course. There'd be no designations, you'd position such things as "Barracks" and "Magma Cannon" as single uncustomizable entities. You would mine by placing a mine entrance, and your dwarves would deal with the specifics themselves, taking out generic "ore" and possibly "gems". Tunnels and pipelines would be drawn like roads and walls in other games. So would roads and walls. Everything randomly generated would be gone. You'd have a campaign mode with some trite story about the goblins and their demon boss. You'd make at least five fortresses with the goal of eliminating goblin resources or gaining some of your own. The final one would share a map with the dark tower where the demon resides. Combat would involve selecting groups of troops by dragging a box around them, and right-clicking on a target. Production would involve clicking icons at workshops, and thus would perhaps be the most similar to the current system. You would make weapons and armor by first turning turning ore into steel at the smelter, and then an amount of steel would be subtracted from your stockpiles to buy upgrades at the forge.

So basically, it'd be similar to the bastardizations/sequels of Black & White and Majesty.

Stingers are modified ovipositors (egg-laying structures).

They sting you with their vaginas?!?!?!?
I F**KIN' KNEW IT
glad I've never been stung
There are people who didn't know that? That's why only queens lay eggs.
