General Discussion / Re: Moon hoax people
« on: May 28, 2010, 03:56:12 pm »
I've heard alot of conspircy theorists in my day, due to having the tolerance to befriend people that believe in such inane stuff.

The best one was a friend that claimed that people have never put ANYTHING outside of the atmosphere at all. He claims escape velocity is impossible to achieve with our technology (and even had the mathematic "proof" which I could never have decoded) and the space shuttle justs blasts off from Florida and lands in Spain. Other launches are just sounding rockets for upper atmosphere research. GPS is actually a system of HAM radio signal triangulation and satellite photos are taken by spy planes or "stealth blimps" and hubble-telescope images are from earth-based scopes.

Footage shot from outer space was computer imagery.

However, this was before the NASA channel and their endless footage of astronaunts floating around the ISS. Guy explained everything in such a scientific manner I almost believed him, but I can't think of any way he could explain some astronaunt giving a tour of the boring crap inside the ISS.

I think he probably just made that "theory" up to fuck with me now that I think about it.

I'd be happy if I knew why this thread has like, 6700 posts.

I'd also be happy if everyone would stop posting or something, cause its always in my "Show new replies to your posts." thingie.

That made me chuckle.  It's also getting entered in the List of Things I Am No Longer Allowed to do in ShadowRun.

You play pen and paper Shadowrun? I used to GM Shadowrun sessions and after that group disbanded its hard to find folks that have even heard of it.

If this was a bar I'd buy you a drink. Well, a cheap drink, anyways.

Thats a good idea, even if the giant doesn't have any useful loot, the crap your dead buddies are wearing would be easy pickings. You'd never even need to go to war with a civ that way.

Alternatively, anything you can do to get your comrades killed could be profitable. Go do some patrols on a Terrifying river or something untill you can afford that +Iron Halberd+ back in town you've got your eye on.

7/10

Looks cool. Would be 9/10 if it was certain what the hell it was, grim reaper? Minotaur wearing a robe? I can't say for sure.

Thats true, I suppose its unrealistic to think the process would go any faster and assembly-line style production isn't something that existed in the time period, nor is it very dwarfy anyways.

Still, I'd love a way for products to be standardized so you can decide what quality you want to produce. That way you at least have all your soldiers equipped with uniform quality gear.

Well, then that brings up things like destiny vs freewill. Maybe god really is putting chicken sandwiches in your hand, like it or not.

But if you knew somebody else was making your choices for you and limiting your options, you'd be unhappy about it. So then there would be a point where the lack of options would be the largest obstacle to your happiness.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: to the pit - or not.
« on: May 28, 2010, 08:48:23 am »
Some animals cannot be safely pitted. Goblins and other invaders can be reasonably safe to pit. Macques and other critters will cause mass chaos the instant you try to pit them.

Well, Barba is the latin word for beard. Hence, barber.

So, barbarian is literally "Bearded guy" or something like that.

Well, I meant a human version of a Skinner box, where you could push a button and receive a drug like euphoria whenever you wanted.

I'll have to argue that experimental animals that grow up completely isolated turn out to be pretty maladjusted and miserable. Same with humans, too.

But I suppose if you had no concept of freedom, the option would seem alot less attractive.

You could always drop out of school and go join the military or something if you really want to be away from your parent's influence.

Yeah, not sure why I implied legs were critical for smoking reefer, in retrospect.

But anyways, freedom does suggest you have the oppurtunity to do certain things that could make you happy and you are not in some doomed situation without any way to meet your basic human needs.

I suppose total freedom and unlimited oppurtunity might still not make you happy. Maybe you have a brain disorder that keeps you from experiencing joy or elelation from anything you do. Best you could do then is just make an intellectual judgement about your well being.

While the only way I can see being happy with absolutely no freedom is if you were like one of B.F. Skinner's rats, stuck in a box with an electrode hooked to your brain.

Or maybe I'm missing the point entirely.

Well, if having your Maslow's hierarchy of needs taken care of is your sole concern, you could just go to prison. I'm sure you can be happy in prison, you can read books, make friends, have food, shelter and everything provided for you. You just don't have your freedom.

I take freedom as being more of a physical thing, rather then a societal concept. You can smoke all the reefer and run all the red lights you want so long as you don't get caught doing it. You can't do either of those things if your legs don't work.

Well, if you were on some barren rock in the ocean, you would'nt really be free because you can't do anything. You might as well be locked in a jail cell.

So freedom in this case I take as anything you can reasonably do within the limits of human capicity, not so much the freedom to move about the inside of a locked closet. Omnipotence might be out of the question, though.

I don't get terriby offended by people being jerks on the internet, I'm interested in your take on this.

I take it that so long as you are free, you can take a course of action that can lead you to happiness, or at least take comfort in the fact that you can do what you want.

Not sure freedom requires happiness. Its convicable you can unfree and happy, but I can't see how you can have no happiness so long as you are free.
