I'd say people probably disliked and distrusted the government even more in 1969 then they do today.

General Discussion / Re: Happiness... Or Freedom?

I could run off and do any of those things you just mentioned, if I really wanted to. Its all within the realm of human ability. Just because I choose not to doesn't make me less free.

Lack of freedom would be say, being paralysed from the neck down, or being locked in a jail cell. In these cases you could conceivably be happy, you could just be drugged into a blissful stupor the entire time. I'd rather just be miserable yet maintain my freedom.

Freedom.

I can't imagine any situation where I would be happy but not free.

That fish maybe might be a historial figure with a name, now that it had its been the leader of a dwarven settlement.

I don't think it was a hoax but a couple of things I still don't get...

I find it rather astounding that you can send a world-wide live television broadcast from the surface of the moon, with with the rather modest broadcasting equipment the brought with them.

I'm still amazed that not only did they land the capsule perfectly, they launched from the surface of the moon and managed to plot a tragectory that brought them back almost effortlessly, all with a pretty primitive set up.

Thing is, the US Navy is 60% of the world's naval power. A super-awesome new gun on the already super-awesome ships and crew isn't going to change the paradigm much when the rest of the world still has its naval assets the way it is.

Most countries don't have the inclination or the budget for such super-science insanity and they are content with small boats with small guns and small boats with large anti-shipping missiles.

The "ROTW" naval powers are developed to combat other nations that are not the USA. The USA is developing systems to counter the navy the entire world could muster or some atagonistic nation's navy that might come about 30 years from now.

DF Suggestions / Re: A few more tokens for mods

I dunno about destruction of the materials if a "make awesome item x1" order fails.

Maybe my thinking is too industrial age, but I think lesser-skilled smiths would be better suited at mass production orders, they churn out 40 -Steel Swords- while if they worked normally they'd produce 22 Steel Swords, 10 -Steel Swords- And 8 +Steel Swords+ which would take 3 times longer.

A legendary craftsman would just be constrained by adhering to such demands for uniformity and while the'd produce decent stuff, it would be better to just let him do his own thing and craft at his own pace and ideas.

Alternatively, you could spend 3 times the construction time to produce a slightly better item. It should be only feasable if you are working with a rare material and you don't want it fucked up by having your Legendary craftsdwarf randomly crap out an -Adamantine Short Sword- when he usually churns out exceptional items.

Just my thoughts, so long as it isn't implimented in a horrible way like the new military menu insanity was.

How did a discussion about a theoretical war in future Korea turn into a heated arguement about antiquated naval warfare anyways?

As revenge for the mosque being built, I will mail them 30 un inflated balloons every day. With tiny needle holes in them so they can't be inflated properly.

Dear (insert higher deity here), man! Are you trying to cause a (Jihad/Crusade) here?!

Well, IRL an armored vehicle subject to some attempt to destroy it, it is totally unharmed, disabled in some capability or its destroyed utterly.

Either that rocket or shell penetrates or its doesn't. Hit points don't quite model it right, you can't sink a Coast Guard Frigate with a pistol, no matter how many times you shoot it.

insulting everyone because they're not fucking generals or scholars

Calling people out on their bullshit isn't really insulting, because its bullshit. You don't have to be a general or a scholar to contribute something meaningful. Spouting cliches and wild fantasy and being insulted when nobody accepts the value of shit for its weight in gold? Thats silly.

It doesn't take much to have a modicum of knowledge about the topic on hand. A wikipedia-level of understanding at the least would be a good fuckin start.

Fault: Terrifying visage. 9/10

Bandages: Reminds me of the cover of some generic techno thriller rag novel. 5/10

Which doesn't really make much sense anyways. History has shown that numberical advantage is more of a logicistical hinderance then a deciding factor. Massive numbers of soldiers means massive causalities. This is 2010, not 1860. Massed formations of troops is asking for a massed destruction of said troops. Trenches and machineguns rendered massed formations idioitic back in 1914. Its even more true today.

Iraq's million-man Army proved to be nigh useless a decade ago.

No, an ancient spearman in the mountains cannot destroy a battleship in the real world.

164
Yeah, I really don't think anybody here is qualified to make these overwhelming judgements on the quality of any nation's military.

Using video game terms like "zerg rush" to describe anything that isn't Starcraft is a sure sign that you have no fuckin clue what you are talking about.

I really doubt that platform needed anything other then heat and gravity to sink it.

I also seriously doubt BP or any other corporation involved is competent and ballsy enough to even consider, let alone execute such an idea.

Their best plans of solving the problem is fodder for late night comedian talkshows. Nothing BP has done has indicated anything other then mass confusion and panic at their highest levels.
