I want to say that cutting up items is tied to survival, but I'm not sure. Just chop up a lot of clothing, zombies aren't exactly hard to come by.

302
Does anyone remember the requirements for the RV welding unit? I was hoping to be able to use one of those to get around the battery requirement for welding.

Zweihanders and shopping carts.  Don't need the storage, and don't need the protection because nothing survives a zweihander hit except brutes and hulks, who only take 2 hits.

That worked great for me... until I met the turret.

On the bright side, my new character is going great. Found a compound bow and a gun store, disassembled a lawn mower to make a makeshift machete that should hold me until I can find or forge a battle ready sword. Took down a hulk with a molotov and a glock (would figure I run into a hulk the ONE time I leave the shotgun at home). Just need a little more mechanical skill before I can start constructing a mobile base and start wandering.

It worked so well the first dozen or so times. I swear, summer is the most dangerous season in this game. You want to be all bundled up, walking around without enough clothing to survive in the north pole is dangerous.

Got killed by a turret in a lab. The first time I explored a lab, it was freezing cold and I was bundled in multiple layers of reinforced armor. The second time, it was summer and I had very little armor. Tried to rush the turret with a sword. Bad idea.

Now I know.

Does anyone know a good way to train Computers aside from books? I have one that requires Computers 3, but no way to train it otherwise, at all.
You can find a console in a science lab with an option "Upload to Melchior" or something like this and try using it. Failure does not make anything bad happen and trains your skill. Although finding "How to browse the web" is probably easier.

Hmm, now adding to the list of newbie questions, where do I find rebar? I'm trying to build a jackhammer, hoping to smash my way into the vault in the doctors office before I leave in my solar powered RV (which I'd finish if it would stop raining acid... why couldn't I have been in Texas when the apocalypse hit, it almost never rains there). I either have or know how to get everything but rebar.

Note to self - when installing an RV welding kit on your solar-RV-in-progress, put the welding kit on the ground before you install. 34 pain from carrying too much weight... awesome, bring on the codeine. On the bright side, now I can stop using batteries to weld the rest of the car together. I should have done this sooner!

Question: Does acid rain damage vehicles? I pulled my scooter under cover just in case, but I was just wondering if I was being paranoid or if it was a real concern.

Finished with the lab, near as I can tell. I didn't find anything interesting on the bottom floor, but I mostly got bored. Maybe I'll go back. Right now, I want to get my electronics skill up so I can install the Integrated Tool Set I found.

Which is fine. Homemade weapons should be inaccurate, at least the ones that are crafted with limited skill (some of the advanced ones I could see an argument for being more accurate, but once you have that range of tools and equipment you've earned the right to craft the good stuff). We're talking about the military and civilian grade firearms you can find on bodies and in stores.

In other news, my Otaku is now lightly furred. Convenient (this lab is FREEZING) and in character. I like it.

I am entirely against making dispersion a non-issue. In-game distances are shrunk by necessity, and if we attempted to have firearms duplicate their performance to-the-T in-game, they would be the only thing to do so. Our sight range is shrunk, our worldspace is shrunk, and time dilation is going on. They are perfectly fine as is- you want to hit something far away? Use an accurate gun. You're only concerned about things within 8 tiles? A shotgun is viable. You push shotgun range out to it's RL equivalent, and it would be viable for 5/6 of the viewable area. Not. Good. For. Gameplay.

The current system has both skill and inherent weapon dispersion as factors that effect the gameplay. This is a good thing.

The problem is, even a good rifle tends to start missing at 8 tiles. Doesn't matter how accurate your gun us, once you get 10 tiles away you simply start missing fairly consistantly. Even with time and space dilation, a good rifle should not start missing at 10 tiles, but currently they do. To put it in perspective, imagine you were standing at one end of your house and shooting a target at the other end of your house. The current dispersion dictates that many of your shots would miss even if your gun was always pointed directly at the target because that human sized target you're shooting at is beyond the accuracy tolerances of the gun. Had guns really been that inaccurate, we never would have started using them.

Modern firearms are really, really accurate though. Snipers have confirmed kills at over 2 kilometers - given the previously mentioned  (by you) ~1 m per square that you yourself mentioned, that's 2000 tiles!

For assault rifles, the m16's effective range is 550m (ak-47 less accurate but not that much less).

Realistically, at the practically point-blank range 99% of combat in cataclysm takes place at, pretty much all guns should be effectively 100% accurate and the only thing determining if you hit or miss is the user's skill.

Sure, gameplay > realism and the game probably does not even keep track of monsters 2000 tiles away and it would be silly if you could shoot that far anyway.. but saying skill stops mattering because of mechanical inaccuracy in the weapon at like 10 meters is just absurd. Even unrifled civil war muskets using crappy homemade ball ammo were accurate to around 90 - 140 meters.
This is a pretty shallow analysis of gun accuracy.  Especially in panicked and adrenaline packed situations, missing a target at relatively close range is pretty easy. There's a million factors like weather, your own hand strength, and so many others.

That should be skill based though. A civilian fresh out of the shelter would probably spray full-auto rounds wildly at a zombie hoard 4 meters away from him/her, yes. A battle hardened survivor four months into the apocalypse would calmly put one handgun round in each zombies skull before returning to what he/she was doing before being so rudely interrupted.

Bah, kids these days aren't even willing to drain a pool and refill it with something flammable for a zombbq. Back in my day, we had to make our own zombbq. And we didn't have any sissy molotovs or flamethrowers either, we had to light every fire ourselves by hand. And we LIKED it!

314
Well, honestly name something that isn't good for Zombbq.

Swimming pools

You just have to remove all that annoying water first.

Got a bunch of nice mutations - night vision, deft, dexterous, fleet-footed. Unfortunately I had to eat a few limbs, so now I'm all depressed. Dunno why... I can freaking see in the dark! I'm pretty sure the body parts I ate were never alive anyways, who cares if it was shaped like an arm.

315
It's been pretty much my experience that anything more than 6 or so spaces away is almost impossible to hit. I suspect it's the dispersion, regardless of your skill if the ammo doesn't go through the space you can't hit the target. Maybe dispersion is too high, or should be tied to weapon/firearm skill with a lower bound instead of set so high by default.

Edit: Managed to get into the lab. Holy crap those things are cold. Actually caught frostbite my first time down. Wow.
