You mentioned Starsiege. I believe it had another game in the series called Earthsiege, which was very similar. In particular, I remember learning quickly that you could disable enemy mechs by blasting their kneecaps. Break the kneecap and they were helpless, you could disable them with beam weapons or just leave them there. I can't remember if they would keep firing if you stepped into their line of fire from the ground. Probably not.

Could be worse. I went through 50 godpower yelling at my guy to pray. Between the garbled messages and him being denser than the gold bricks he's not collecting, he laughed and freaked when I cussed him out. If I had any godpower left, I'd punish him.

Honestly, I've gotten so used to driving with mouse/keyboard that console games feel weird. Once you get used to them, using WASD to move and mouse to aim/steer is very natural. Especially after being trained by Valve to always check the roof (gamers don't look up... unless they've played HL2 or L4D), the accuracy and speed from the mouse are pure gold.

I think the main draw for PC's, at least to me, is that they're more backwards compatible, and for that matter, more inter-compatible. Macs and Linux PC's can emulate Windows games (the opposite is probably true as well, but Linux is so easy to dual boot with how lightweight it is that emulation is unnecessary. Not sure about macs, but then, I've never seen mac-only programs that I cared about), and many 95/98/XP games are now either free or abandonware, or else have gone into the Steam $5 bargain bin. You see more indie games for PC's as well, many of which are very innovative. Honestly, I think consoles are going to have to rethink the controls they put on game releases. They were useful when the industry was recovering (part of what triggered the first video game crash was 3rd party developers releasing horrible games), but now that the industry is robust they need to lighten up.

Deus ex: Try not to kill except when absolutely necessary. Sometimes you can't help it, and it's frustrating to have to use the dart gun, riot prod, or baton when you could use the sniper rifle to get a quicker and quieter takedown, but it's what your brother would want.
Gas grenades. It's like giving them cigarettes.

The problem with gas grenades was it created little gas "whirls" that drifted around and if anyone stumbled into them they started coughing. That was great, except it caused massive alarm and didn't permanently, or sometimes even temporarily, disable an enemy. Plus if you walked into the gas you started taking torso damage fast. The whole advantage of non-lethal takedowns was supposed to be that they were silent, which meant stealth. There's no point in announcing your presence if you can't even get through the massed enemies because the gas cloud that's inconvenient to them is lethal to you.

I loved the dart gun though. If you could find some cover and slowly pick them off with a scoped crossbow you could do 100% non-lethal takedowns without ever taking a hit or even risking being seen. Twas great.

Tough to get the shields down though. Lillith in particular has the worst offensive ability (which is mitigated by being the best 'OHSHIT' button in the game). I'm playing through again as Mordecai, which should be easier, either by going deep sniper or remembering to bring along a shock weapon (silly me, I switched to incendiary and explosive for the Atlas soldiers) or just switching to shock Bloodwing.

I wonder if anyone has actually won while worshiping Xom. He's fun, but too random.

Underdome Riot is hailed as the worst Borderlands DLC. It's basically an arena, which pretty much requires four competent players to be doable. It's only viable if you have three good friends to work with you. Otherwise, you're screwed.

My best gun was an orange SMG on Lilith with level 4 fire, ridiculous rate of fire, and decent damage. I could easily take down the crimson soldiers without needing to even aim, just pump shots into their shield and let the fire procs, which seemed to penetrate even the invulnerable shield, take them down in five seconds. Unfortunately, it could barely hurt the vault guardians, so I had to switch to a white pistol which had shock damage. I hated that last part, the vault guards are almost impossible to kill without shock damage, and the only shock weapon I had was a rocket launcher. Good luck hitting anything with that.

If you liked Black and White 2 but hated the creature, it's probably worth getting.

That doesn't sound like the Black and White I know....

Ugh, Black and White 2 was an awesome city builder, with a nice combat feature, and these literal deus ex machina creatures walking around stomping on everything. The only reason you needed soldiers at all was the creature couldn't capture towns, it took like 200 veterans to take the creature down, more if he knew the lightning and heal miracle.

Tropico is Black and White 2 taken a step down - you're not god, you just think you are. Very fun game.

Don't read this. It's an unrelated, somewhat irrational post.

As for the OP, I prefer PC to console. PC has more games, a better control scheme, and is in general easier to work with if you know what you're doing. But that's just me, I also tend to wait a few years for others to sort out which games are worth getting and which are crappy knock offs. Easier to find vintage games for the PC than consoles.

Borderlands: Go through the game using only high caliber, low clip weapons like the sniper rifle and revolver. Easy for most of the game, makes bosses a little tougher as you can't just spray them with bullets, you have to aim for their soft points.

Deus ex: Try not to kill except when absolutely necessary. Sometimes you can't help it, and it's frustrating to have to use the dart gun, riot prod, or baton when you could use the sniper rifle to get a quicker and quieter takedown, but it's what your brother would want.

Ugh, rocket shotguns. Inaccurate as all get out and they did less damage than a regular shotgun or revolver. I could have an enemy entirely covering the targeting circle (very freakin close range) and still miss. I'd rather use a cluster rocket launcher or forget missiles entirely and use a sniper rifle and a little skill to explode heads like rotten cabbage. Even against large enemies, you'd be better off with a high capacity gun like an SMG or Machine Gun for their raw damage output.

Beat Borderlands.
Spoiler: Ending (click to show/hide)

One of the thanks quotes at the end is, "Your mom."

I'm doing the second playthough now.  I have an orange SMG that I love.  It's a something Hellfire.  I found it on an enemy in Old Haven, go figure.
Yea, the ending is a little weird.

And I never did figure out where you go to fight the ninja claptrap. Srsly.

On the positive side, the gameplay makes up for the lackluster plot. Probably going to buy Zombie Island and possibly Noxx later. Everyone says to stay away from Underdome.

DF mentions are getting more and more common. Next thing you know Valve will release a L4D expansion where you get attacked by zombie carp that crawl out of the river. There were about half a dozen references to other zombie games in The Passing, after all.

Tropico 3 is well worth it if you like city builders imo. It's hard, but not unforgivingly hard, kind of like DF after you've managed cliff-like learning curve. Mistakes like not investing enough in military or raising some jobs wages so high that nobody in their right mind would do them (which can be lethal if you accidentally make farming/ranching/fishing undesirable) have realistic and irritating consequences. If you liked Black and White 2 but hated the creature, it's probably worth getting.

It's 7.50 on Steam now. Get it while it's hot, don't put it off if you're even mildly interested. If you aren't sure, download the free demo. Seriously, don't wait.

Food from butchery doesn't last long enough, agreed, unless you play a character that can eat it raw. It lasts longer in your stomach, for some bizarre reason. Or, more likely, you can just carry more internally, which is equally unlikely except for characters like trolls that are by definition too big.

Personally, I think it'd be interesting to see a conjuration or something that allowed you to cook meat. Food makes casters very hard to play.

Elf at 20? Nah, it's not that hard. I got to 7 at level 13 with a troll monk. Just takes patience and a little strategy.

Your goal is to force the elves to face you head to head, allowing the archers to shoot you and the summoners to start spamming is a death sentence. Don't be afraid to run or backtrack a bit, and always keep track of the nearest up stairs. Take advantage of line of sight, if you stand a little ways back in a hallway you can force them to approach you at 1 space away. They're pitiful in melee. Summoners need to be caught off guard, either rush them or run away and wait for their spammals to vanish. Knights hurt, but if you have sufficiently high AC, health, or just brute force (in the case of a troll monk with dragon hide armor and the anger mutation, all three) they're just snack food. Aside from using artifacts, namely magic decks from Nimelex Xobeh, to get out of sticky situations it's very manageable at an earlier level.su

However, if you aren't playing such a blunt class I can see how it could be hard. Certainly my summoner got eaten alive in there, demons couldn't hold them back well enough.

Edit: See invisible... yea, wish I had that. I just killed everything I could see and lashed out randomly when I was getting attacked by something I couldn't. Works well enough, you know, for a troll.
