I have a 2 ghz dual core processor and DF is running at 50ish FPS with 85 Dwarves.

I've installed a dwarven jacuzzi for my fortress's new meeting place.  My dwarfs are learning how to swim as I type this...

I had them stand in the surf before, but the swimming skill doesn't seem to go past dabbling for whatever reason.
Dwarves only get swimming experience from MOVING in water.

According to some tests I ran, the number of underground z levels makes no difference. Above ground makes a huge difference if birds are around.

God damn that's one sweet military creed. I've never liked the idea of shooter dwarfs anyway - I prefer using axes to split the enemies in half.

Vertically or horizontally? Because real Dwarves do everything vertically. They build vertically, they sleep vertically and they even get horizontal vertically.

Raz and Pkassad- I've seen that a few times even in 40d, is it possible the goblins babysnatched so many kids the goblins themselves were wiped out? By this I mean, it's possible that it is still a "goblin" civ, but that all goblins are gone and instead replaced by non-goblins that are effectively goblins.
Word has it that Goblins can't breed. So while they'd be slowly killed off, any babies they snatched would be able to reproduce and eventually replace the Goblins.

Though a large enough enough group o marksdwarves CAN break a siege easily. With no casualties. And make their shots look like a huge laserbeam if they fire in rapid succession next to the other Dwarves.

Check your stocks menu for raw fish. I didn't notice my fishers had caught 400 units of turtle until I did. I kept getting spammed with THERE ARE NO FISH HERE messages. Also, raw fish is not shown under "Fish" in the food-stock counter under z, either.

It's very possible. You need to capture them in cage traps, first. They will not suffocate while in cages. Next you need to tame them. Make sure the kennel is in 3/7 water so your training Dwarf won't drown but the Whale can survive, too. Voilą.

Gembish Mange-Clam the Whiskered Oak: An enormous one-eyed earwig.  It has a long, swinging trunk and it has a regal bearing.  Its amber exoskeleton is wrinkled.  Beware its webs!

Everyone keeps saying ranged weapons are useless because they're comparing them to the .50 cal machineguns they used to be. Archers will still ruin your day, they're just not the unapproachable gods of yore.
Amen. Each of my killing sprees (200+ humans each time) was stopped by an archer.

Update on the soap issue. For those of you who made soap through the manager screen: Check your soap's worth. Is it 1 instead of 100? If so, that might play a large part in why it's not recognized as soap. Also I confirmed changing the globs into blocks does not work.
