Hello.
Can I have a question about Vlanlados? Is it possible to simply drown the mines in concrete and then give it up? Uranium will probably not be usefull for quite some time, and cleaning concrete will take some time.
Unfortunately, the pitchblende formations are widespread and exposed- hence the Vlanladosians having quarried them for rock to build their homes in the first place.

Right, might as well bite the bullet and send two knights to the barracks to train new recruits (although wouldn't it make more sense if archers trained archers?) We can remove them from the north tower. I think if we don't start training recruits early it will hurt in the long run.

If you guys want we may as well start trapping the road to the north gate. That will be their fastest route to do serious damage to us so we might as well slow them down.

Quote from: Plan A
Troop Movement:
North Tower: 6 Archers, 2 Knights
North Courtyard: 10 Veterans, Hero
East Tower: 6 Archers
West Tower: 6 Archers
South Tower: 2 Archers, 1 Knight

Foundry:
Begin construction of a Ballista on the North Tower

Watchtower:
Start laying traps on the road to the north gate.

Barracks:
Begin training two Recruits as Archers. Two Knights are stationed here to conduct the training.

Decision Points:
Hold position until we get a good idea were enemies are going- so probably wait until we see some of them actually enter ramparts, or make their way to the west/east rampart without stopping. If they go to any of the northern/eastern areas, move an equal distribution of our veterans into position on the walls.

It seems rather quiet here, so I suppose I will propose something: Let's station archers at all towers as scouts, and skew our melee forces towards the north end of the castle. If I read correctly, most of them (besides knights) only fight when the enemy tries to climb the wall, so placing them in the north courtyard should have them capable of moving to any location before the enemy, as long as they don't sneak up on us, and the archers should prevent that as long as daylight lasts.

Name the camp "Approaching Dawn"

Future's gotta be brighter, right? Always darkest before the dawn, etc etc?

...speaking of which, what season is it? Antarctica gets screwy around the solstices.

It is the winter, after the solstice. Days are about 9 hours long and getting longer.

Recovering

The first day after the disaster is spent, hurriedly, burying the dead, though some spend time searching for their loved ones, finding out who survived among the many missing people. Some of the colonists are found in areas near the camp, having reached the shore after the ship collapsed but frozen to death afterwards, soaking wet and lost in the wind and darkness only a short walk away. The dead are pushed off to sea, sinking in the freezing water- there is no time to dig graves, and though the members of the Kotzar's cabinet are careful not to say this around the common folk, they will attract fish. One colonist announces himself to be a pastor, and holds a short service. A few sections of pipe are scavenged from the steam turbine to rig into a short flagpole, and the flag of Vlanlados is raised at half mast. The colonists who aren't too grief-stricken to work, work themselves breathless to accomplish this all in a matter of hours.

The Industrious Spirit of Vlanlados

There is no more time to grieve. Night will fall soon. Enough, and just barely enough, igloos are constructed before dark to get everyone out of the wind. It's overcrowded, though. There isn't even space for a fire in most igloos, the sick are bundled together but still not completely separated from the healthy- in fact, hygiene procedures are less than ideal in general without the doctor around to be a definitive authority on such matters.

For the rest of the week, three main tasks are carried out. First, warm coats for an expedition are prepared, of the chicken leather and chicken feathers from the supplies (thankfully there were enough spools of thread left to manage). The chicken-leather coats are lumpy and misshapen despite the women doing their best job, it's a lousy material to work with. 20 coats are completed, and still quite warm, after a couple days of work 10 people are sent after the direction of the hunters and 10 after the miners. They haven't got tents, and will need to bury themselves in the snow or dig caves to stay warm- hardly ideal, but most Vlanladosians experienced in traveling in the wilderness have done it at least once before.

The boats are dedicated primarily to bringing in salvage, before the sea carries it away. [1d6:3] Lots of soaked deck planks are recovered- these will be valuable for burning, and maybe for building materials, as long as they're dried in front of a coal fire first. There's some metal things recovered from shore as well- stuff like silverware, or spare screws, which was kept in wooden boxes. [1d6:4] Furthermore, there's some cot mattresses and hammocks recovered as well, they're small but have valuable cotton stuffing and fabric. Everything else seems to be at the bottom of the sea. A solitary boat is dedicated to fishing as well, bringing up 350 rations (700lb) of fish and krill.

Everyone who isn't busy boating, sewing, tending to the sick, or searching for the expeditionary parties gets to work making igloos, led by the architect. That's about 200 people, and by the end of the week they have successfully made enough igloos for everyone. The igloos are still not totally ideal shelters, especially for the recovering sick colonists, but they prevent people from freezing.

It is Day 34

Word comes back from the two expeditions which had gone out earlier. [1d6-1:3] The hunting expedition didn't catch the worst of the storm, they're mostly okay, though they lost a sled (supposedly, they're pretty sure a polar bear dragged it off in the night while it was full of meat, but they didn't feel up to tracking it down). The two sleds plus their backpacks were loaded up, though, with a total of 1000 rations. Luckily they arrive mid-week, because the colony is running out of food. Though they're exhausted with the weight of a ton of food between the 18 people, their coming is celebrated. [1d6-1:0] The other expedition wasn't so lucky. The people sent to find them found the excavator half-buried in a land slide, the tractor protruding from the water on what appears to be a collapsed ice shelf nearby, and one broken tent with a couple of frozen corpses. The rescue team returned empty-handed.

The state at the colony is again such that there are several problems. The frostbitten people have gotten worse, they may die soon without amputation, and a few of the sick people passed away. Moreover, a number of the people stuffed together in the igloos have become ill as well, with a fever, although some of the people who were already sick have recovered as well. Also, thanks to the efforts of the hunters, people have mostly been able to get through the week without resorting to half rations. Unfortunately, someone really should have told them to eat half rations. In the morning when you look in the food-storage igloo, you find only a few scraps left. For a more minor concern, the lantern oil is also going to run out  eventually.

All the colonists have taken to calling the area in which the igloos and supplies are situated "Shipwreck Camp". While this is apt, you may want to think of a less depressing name.

Now that shelter is secured, it would be prudent to dedicate as many people as possible to finding food.

"General Anti-Radiation Missile" is a guidance package that can be applied to missiles such as "Saltseeker", "Noose" and "Piracy Warning". It's essentially half of radar guidance, since it only contains passive detection systems. It uses those to home onto Cannalan radar frequencies (hopefully different than ours, possibly also have it changeable in case they try to revise their radar) or possibly even radio frequencies in attempt to destroy them, or at least force enemy to turn off their radar, which will significantly lower their combat capabilities. The missile is intended to be air-launched, though it might as well be launched from the ground or ships.

Hard: 2
UF-GARM-45 "Garm":
The Garm GARM is an ARM, an anti-radiation missile. Based on the Saltseeker, it follows Cannalan Viking Radar signals instead of radio signals emitted by itself, therefore steering towards a Cannalan radar source (it can also be tuned to any frequency in a wide range). Having only an amplitude of the signal to work with and no doppler effect like a normal radar, it cannot judge its distance to a target the way the Saltseeker can, requiring it to fly at an altitude which will hit a ship for its entire flight path. With the already somewhat imprecise altimeter used, this considerably increases the incidence of the missile dashing itself against the waves and that sort of thing. Cost equal to Saltseeker.

I do love the idea, but realistically I think what we need after the fighter we're already working on is a multiple-engine bomber... and a winged one will probably do better than a lighter-than-air one.

A note on the general rocket propellant revision:

First, I'll probably stick to saying it's some non-specific propellant so I can't provably be wrong about how fast I say some missile of a given weight is. ;) That said, it's not inconceivable that a variety of your existing rockets could be improved by a new propellant.

Second, there's a couple designs in there that might have issues. For instance, the Saltseeker only uses the rockets for its initial launch and turbine engine thereafter, so improving the propellant might have a negligible effect. The Noose uses a two-stage booster, the first solid stage of which is probably pretty close to your current state-of-the-art and the second liquid stage might be more efficient left as it is. Some other ones, like the Sarukh, might suffer in terms of accuracy from just having a more-powerful propellant crammed in.

UF-PS-45 Political Science

The recent riots have us wondering, can politics be weaponized? What happens when Parliament is split into three or even four warring factions? What if it bounces back and forth between five different courses of action? Split the vote again and find out now!
I don't know how long you've been in Arms Race, but that already happened, hehe.

Sensei noted that if it is a tie when he gets back from lunch, he'll do a coin flip.  Let's have that decide.
I'll just go for the Iceberg, since that was in the lead most recently. Do note that I reserve the right to nullify votes in the future if they're made for the sole purpose of keeping the vote at a stalemate or other shenanigans. You can ask for more time to shake out the votes, but don't strategically bounce your vote around to stall the game. Vote for something you want to see built and stick with it unless something better comes along or it's clear that it's not going to win.

Quote from: UFAF-HAFB-45 "Iceberg"
"Iceberg" is all-metal high-wing monoplane flying boat. It's lower fuselage is shaped like a ship hull, allowing it to land and take-off from water, thus enabling us to resupply it at sea. It's wings are relatively small and swept back so it has high wing loading (long takeoff and landings don't really matter if it lands on water, and it won't really maneuver a lot at low speeds) and it's fitted with four aT-J40 turbofan engines attached on top, to minimize water indigestion. Similar to the aT-J30's in the VVF, the aT-40 is simply a non-hydrozine burning engine that can maintain the same thrust output. The plane has a tricycle landing gear, where the rear gear is high and placed in the wing roots, which allows it to be used on land. The plane is built like a Reckless Effect in terms of durability, having redundancies where applicable.

The plane is fitted with standard radar, a radar altimeter that will allow our pilots to fly low to the ground or water and a countermeasure package. It also has turret with a pair of autocannons in the tail, from where the gunner shares control the countermeasures with pilot, to allow for better detection of enemy missiles. The cabins are also air conditioned, and there should be two pilots and at least one flight engineer/radar operator, in addition to the rear gunner.

The plane has a rotating bomb bay, which is insulated against the water by blowing air from engines (this is something we totally should have - jet fuel tanks have to be pressurized to ensue that they don't get starved/the tank literally implodes) to ensue a tight fit. The bomb bay should take "a lot", around 10-15 tons, and there are also external hardpoints similar to those on VVF, that can be fitted with additional fuel or ordnance, such as "Noose" missiles or even "Saltseekers", and also our old torpedoes, even if they might not see a lot of use. The total useful carry capability should be somewhere around 20 tons, but kept under 30 tons, so the plane doesn't become too big and expensive. The plane could be also used to deploy naval mines, possibly through an additional hatch on the side of the plane.

If time allows the plane should be painted with that nice UV reflective paint other engineers have been proposing, and it could be applied to our other planes.

The plan is settled. It was a hard time getting here. Some engineers had to be forcibly escorted from the board room, and it nearly came to an armed duel- and good thing it didn't, because an armed duel between weapons engineers tends to be dangerous for anyone in a considerable vicinity. People argued, people changed sides, designs were thrown out. When all is said and done, only one blueprint remains on the table: An enormous seaplane. Some engineers have dreamed of this for years.

Hard: 5
UFAF-HAFB-45 "Iceberg":
The new successor to the High Altitude Fast Bomber name, the Iceberg is large, high-wing flying boat. It has a broad front cabin composed of four window panes with space for a pilot, co-pilot, radar engineer and bomb aimer, as well as a turret in back. The wings, while enormous, are relatively small for its load and gently swept back. On top of them are four aT-J40 engines, large engines burning a normal fuel mixture to approximately equal the aT-J30's thrust, which was the hydrazine-burning engine in the VVF. The engines are in pairs close to the wing root and their position helps minimize intake of water. Below the wing root are fairings which conceal the side landing gear, which in addition to a set of nose landing gear allows the plan to use land runways. Its emphasis on high-speed performance means it needs a lot of space to land or takeoff, which makes it best suited for water use. Its bomb bay is set on a rotating apparatus: the bottom half is an aerodynamic shape for flying and landing, which seals against the frame of the plane with an inflating rubber cushion (fed by an engine exhaust outlet) to prevent intrusion of water or outside air. The bombs sit on top, inside the cabin, and the rack rotates upside-down to expose them to the outside for deployment, which takes several seconds. The internal bomb rack can hold 12 tons of bombs. Additionally it has four wing hardpoints, two close to the wing root which support fully four tons each (for Saltseeker missiles) and two more one-ton mounts for other uses. The plane can carry a total of 16 tons spread across its internal bomb bay and hardpoints at once. Its other equipment includes the rear turret, sitting in a ball at the tail with a pair of 20mm Velociraptors, and the radar system. The radar, based on a Deadliest Ray, also includes a radar altimeter and a crude ground-scanning system which can approximate the outlay of hills and mountains, illuminating the display variously based on the range of the contact, to assist in flying at night or in poor weather. Lastly it's painted with a paint which the scientists claim reflects UV light, therefore preventing Balefire Violet missiles from locking onto it, it reflects visible light as well and appears bright, matte white. It reaches very high altitudes (oxygen masks and pressurized cabin both included of course) and speeds, albeit less than the VVF or Charlotte, and has a moderate climb rate with a turn-time of 'eventually'. Bump, lest the colonists make of plans of their own without your guidance.

418
Considering how controversial this is, I'll leave it a little longer. But if it doesn't change in a few hours I'll roll for the Dustbiter, which is currently in a narrow lead.

419
Oh don't mind Kot, he's always trolling. Anyway, the remaining votes are nearly a three-way tie between the Hammer of Forenia, Dustbiter (with curiously enough Zanz himself no longer voting for it) and the Iceberg. Such suspense! Those of you voting for the Archer II and Ekaternia might want to re-vote for one of the three bomber designs and help make the final decision.

420
You know you can just say "please don't lock" instead right? ;)

It's okay, the Cannalans have been tied at a 2-2 vote since well before I went to bed last night because nobody looks in their thread anymore.
