DF Suggestions / Cleaning all that blood and vomit and mud...
« on: November 12, 2007, 10:01:00 am »
Easy as 1-2-3!
Needs a bucket, and water source, like medical.
then [d] clean [C], then drag an area you want cleaned.
A dwarf with cleaning skill, shall go, get water, and clean one square.
Soap + water = 3x3 of clean.

Then those miles of blood and vomit and mud will vanish given sufficient water, buckets, and dwarves.

How's that for an idea?

Only thing I think it needs, is can only be done to "floor", "Wall", "ramp/stair" aka NOT normal ground or grass... unless you really wanted to punish the dwarves perhaps...

DF General Discussion / A question about Magma; Is this normal?
« on: November 24, 2007, 07:19:00 pm »
Now I've seen volcanoes, magma vents teeming with imps and magmamen  in the middle of flat ground, but I ain't never seen one like dis, where glacier met magma...

here's a zip of the lava layers going down... http://rapidshare.com/files/72065192/MagmaVent.zip.html
It's 939KB, so it needn't take but a moment to grab.

On the ground floor, the magma sticks up like so:

That's the obsidion surrounded by ice.
ONE lil' tick! In the zip of images you'll see that this is like this for several floors down, before finally opening into a mighty magma "bubble" or somesuch.

I assume that in the world creation Ice met Fire in the usual story, and this is the result.

While I admit I haven't done much glacier digging, but is this common? Or did Toady create a REALLY good world creator and this is merely possible but not probable?

Thank you for your time,

Mick E Finn.

DF General Discussion / Toady, what did you do to their brakes?
« on: November 18, 2007, 03:59:00 am »
I just got my first Human wagon for a new fortress.

Holy crap! You doped their horses! They arrived in 22 seconds to the center of the map, whilst weaving between trees mind you, with mule merchants trailing behind hella slow! heck, their guards couldn't keep up. This sir, is awesome!

DF General Discussion / 38c out so soon?
« on: February 25, 2008, 07:15:00 am »
Not that that is a bad thing mind you, but it is a bit of a surprise.

It was long at first, then faster, then faster still. Are we on a logarithmic curve Toady?

Will your updates quickly reach infinite and thus be complete soon? :P

Only time may tell... oh, and Good Night/Morning to you all.

DF General Discussion / Teaching kids the old fashioned way...
« on: May 21, 2007, 06:31:00 am »
I had a child go fey, and demanded something hard to come by on a Glacier map, shell.

I did what I could, sacrificing a precious piece of wood to make an animal trap.  Only to be robbed several times.

The child went insane, Berserk in fact. So the whole fortress ground to a halt as this 8-year old, frothing at the mouth, chased this peasant willy-nilly. Only to be put down by an axedwarf.

The moral of the story; Stay in school kids! You may think you are old enough with that fuzz on your chin, but the real world is menacing with spikes, and doesn't play fair.

That, and losing is fun.   :D

I'll keep this quick.

I was playing a Desert Haunted Map.
Some Giant Scorpions, no real problem.

Then came winter.

The River then was covered by thin ice. My First thought was to shrug, eh, it's winter.

But wait I thought, I have no river.

Nonsense says the combat log. (sorry bout the size, but it's a tiny png!)
  :D

So now I sit in a desert of snow, with former horses eating my few dwarves.

I am using no mods, no file manipulators, only a tileset from the forum for quite some time now (January at the least).

I am of course going to make a new world and try again. But I figured that this might be of some entertainment to you people. And of course the Toadster.

I'll make a copy of the entire game dir (minus the giant arse maps) and keep it in case someone wants to poke at it.

Thank you for your ear,

Mick E Finn

[edit: I see that I have at least one mule and horse alive, so it might not be the animals. But I did see nightwings spawn in the middle of my fort, directly upon some of my dwarves, the poor buggers.

As there were only two they might be something only two have, like a particular shoe or something. I dunno.

Oh and the nightwing warnings prior to the river ice was the one three crossbowers shot to death in front of my fortress.  That's why I was near the 'g' when the other two appeared inside the fortress.

It's past the late and is now very late.

I shall check posts in the morning.]

DF General Discussion / Just a quick Seed Question agbout 33g
« on: December 22, 2007, 07:28:00 am »
# made world generation results independent of custom name

Does this mean I will not get the same world I used to have if I used a custom name? If so, does this mean we have LESS seeds than before? Or was the custom name just shifting the seed to a different but still accessable number?

Like seed 123456789 with a custom name 'Timmy' turning into 123465987 or somesuch, still findable, but now without some silly extra bits in the way.

I ask this as I really like this seed or three I've found, but I worry that I will never be able to generate them again, or at least never be able to find them.

Sorry to trouble you so early in the morning.

oh, and this world is rather neat... Allow me to be a tour guide.
-Many Volcanoes ( at least 14 with a quick look). One in the Sea, two (one bright red, one dim red) so close a 3x3 could get both(SW of the big center ocean), one in a jungle, and in the very SE corner, one in a glacier, surrounded by mountains.

-North of that, are some yellow mountains, and a bit west of those are some blue ones with what appears to be an evil lake (that or heavily polluted).

-Northwest of that, you can find a range of good AND evil mountains separated by a river, and a little sand (a 5x5 could touch both...). The area, upon examination, appears to be a central point of a battleground if you look at it right (or some sort of large nuclear explosion in the shape of australia)

-In the very SW corner, if you look a wee bit north, there are two bits of Evil glacier surrounded by mountains, trees, and a river. I've never seen glacier so isolated like that before.

-And if you were ever interested in a tundra island, that's right, island surrounded by artic ocean, we got that too.

Have fun y'all!

DF General Discussion / The Nature of Olm, and an odd cave formed...
« on: November 09, 2007, 02:34:00 am »
This is a fairly decent spot I've chosen, however I hadn't counted on this little odd site bit;
28k png below

In this circular... hole cut into the mountain (I honestly thought it was a meteor strike or something but it's one level tall, no roof damage) There are two tiny pools, with two giant Olm, and about 6 Olmmen. Sending two farmers wielding a steel spear and axe, I took them out with no injuries (aside of the Muskox one chewed a couple chunks out of), and then realized where the webs came from; several teeny tiny olm, wandering about, apprently shat the webbing out at odd intervals( you can see one just below the blue rock in the circle, and yes, that's not a spider). Now Giant Web Shoes are worth two to an anvil, so I'd like to keep this area untouched (plus it's neat to look at) save to harvest webs, but currently, have anyone seen olm(the little ones) grow into an olmman, or even into a giant olm? Is this a lifecycle thing ten years down the road, or ever?

Also, anyone know why I got the neat circle carved out of the cave? I'm just curious. And anyone got some neat caves formed?

Oh and the area itself is kinda neat. http://img137.imageshack.us/img137/8064/necrolancesfullrf6.png
for a full slice.

DF General Discussion / Seeds of Rejection
« on: November 03, 2007, 11:37:00 pm »
There's plenty of good seeds people are finding hither and yon, but what of the most timeless (and time consuming) of them all? The Seeds of Many Rejection.

This is my first one to crack a hundred, 105 to be exact, of a dozen creations. A testament of Toady's work no doubt.

if your pewter be slowe.

So how about it? What's the Longest you've had to wait? 50? A hundred like mine? More?
