DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Large World Gen
« on: May 03, 2010, 02:24:55 pm »
Its not really frozen, just let it go.  Windows may bitch about it not responding, but the game is still working on generating the world, it may just take a while.

To anyone that wants to experiment or maybe see what is going on using a test program or reveal, heres the save,
http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=2288

Cant load this up in game for some reason, doesn't even show on the list.

After more poking around, looks like you did not include the raw folder, or is this even for the current version?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: So Much Stone

Cave-ins do not destroy rock at all...   Go actually try this and see for yourself.
They do if you drop natural solid wall. Impact tile becomes wall, and it works same as obsidian encasing.

The rock is not destroyed tho.  Sometimes it is knocked out of the way, but if it is not knocked out of the way, if you mine out the dropped stone wall, the rock is accessible again, and the whole time is being tracked and is eating its little share of FPS.

Regardless, the example was dropping a constructed floor anyway.

OK, I got to thinking and was wondering if maybe I was off in my thinking so I did some science, and what I describe is exactly what happens.

My experiment consisted of digging out a 21x21 room and channeling a 1x1 hole in the center.  I designated a dumping zone next to this and proceeded to dump all the rock from mining out the room into the hole.  Then I set up to drop a 1x1x1 block into the hole with the 300+ stone in it.  Before dropping the rock I made sure my book keeper was at max precision and noted down 340 stones in my stocks menu.  Then I dropped the block into the hole and checked stocks and still had 340 stone.  K'ing over the dropped tile just showed rough stone, however the stones in the stocks menu, when zoomed to, all zoomed to the rock wall I had dropped.  I then channeled the rock back out, and all 340 rocks were back and accesible.

In short COLLAPSING STUFF ONTO STONES DOES NOT DELETE THEM, IT ONLY HIDES THEM FROM VIEW, THEY ARE STILL THERE.

By all means, if you do not believe me, try this out on your own (here is a copy of the save for my test even). But I stand by my words that the only way to truly eliminate stone is via the means I specified in my previous reply to this topic.

Channel out a 3x3 space.
Build grates over all but two spaces
Grid should look like this:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Mark area around grates as dumping zone.
Dump all the rocks.
Build a single floor over the open space.
Watch as a cave-in utterly deletes your rocks.

Cave-ins do not destroy rock at all...   Go actually try this and see for yourself.

The only way to get the excess rocks really gone is with an atom smasher, melt them in magma, or toss them down a bottomless pit.

and anvils are cast, not forged

This.  It really saddens me that I am forced to have an anvil in order to make one, when all a dwarf really needs to do is grab an iron bar and use that!  Or even better, why cant the smelter spit out an anvil?  It already has the means to cast bars apparently, why cant it cast an anvil?

If magma is going to be on the same tile as the bridge, then it needs to be made of magma safe material.  If magma gets on a bridge (retracting or raising) that is not magma safe the  bridge will deconstruct.

Elves don't usually live long enough to unpack in my experience XD

To make sure barrels are only used for booze I make separate food stockpiles for booze, prepared meals, and everything else, with 0 barrels allowed on all but the booze stockpile.

DF General Discussion / Re: Newest Penny Arcade = Elkbird?

So, is THIS what an Elk Bird looks like? Cause damn, it should be.

That just looks like an owl with horns to me (great horned owl?).  I imagined an elk bird as looking more like an elkish version of a pegasus.

. Thank you Devs... If you're ever in Chi-Town, let me know and I'll buy y'all dinner.
You speak in plural, as if there were more than one person making this game.  You should know that DF is the work of one person, known as Toady One, and that is it.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: how to use a world gen?

It will just add another called MEDIUM to the end of the list, so no real harm is done, other than causing some confusion as to which one is the custom one  ;)

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: question about wells?
« on: April 28, 2010, 01:26:29 am »
well i have a well in my barracks and i dont want that to be a meeting hall is there any way to get them to use it without overlapping rooms?

They wont use it as a meeting area unless you designate it as one, as for overlapping rooms, I usually put wells in little 3x3 rooms off to the side of whatever area I am putting them with to avoid that problem.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: How Do I..? river manipulation
« on: April 27, 2010, 03:08:31 pm »
Since we now can dig into map edges

No we cant...

As for damming the river, My preferred method is to collapse a constructed floor through the riverbottom into a dug out chamber on the z level below which directs the water to a fortification edge drain with a raising bridge to block the drain.  When you collapse the floor it should punch through the river bottom and the water will then flow down through the edge drains and let the river dry out.  Then you can get into the riverbed and construct some walls or a raising bridge or whatever to dam the flow.  After that pull the lever to block the edge drain and your river will fill back up.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: How many cats can adopt the same dwarf?
« on: April 26, 2010, 04:21:33 pm »
I used butcher kittens until one day a kitten turned into a cat and adopted the butcher on the way to the butcher shop (Urist McButcher cancels butcher animal: SOO CUTE AND CUDDUWY ).

These days I embark with 1 male cat and any cats that show up with migrants get taken care of with my handy dandy pet-stripping device (think retracting bridge over 30 level drop and some strategically placed doors).

I personally split up my food into 3 stockpiles; Booze/liquids, Seeds, Prepared Meals,  Everything else.  The only stockpiles allowed barrels are the seed and booze stockpiles, the other 2 have barrels set at 0 so that all barrels are reserved for booze making.
