I do believe that it is 'important stuff' happening in that area that makes a tile flash.

I think it's something you should spend tons of time setting up and then report the disastrous yet comical results.
Your topic vs. your OP seem to be asking different things (one says water, the other says magma).
To the best of my knowledge:
- Wooden pump components (pipe, screw) cannot be used to safely pump magma. The pump will catch on fire and then deconstruct after pumping a few dozen tiles of magma.
- Wooden pumps cannot be safely submerged in magma.
- Wooden pumps can safely be used to pump water.
- Wooden pumps can safely be submerged in water.
I haven't tested whether a pump with wooden pump components but a magma safe block is safe when submerged in magma.
What I think is going on is when two dwarfs or animals are on the same space there is move out of the way check of some kind. Sometimes they move over the well and fall in. The more dwarfs on one tile the higher chance you have of someone falling in.
You know, you could just tap it at the top.
The goal is to flood the entire outside edge of the embark area with magma.
