I do believe that it is 'important stuff' happening in that area that makes a tile flash.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: .31 Screw Pumps, Wood and Magma
« on: April 26, 2010, 02:25:12 am »
I think it's something you should spend tons of time setting up and then report the disastrous yet comical results.

Your topic vs. your OP seem to be asking different things (one says water, the other says magma).

To the best of my knowledge:

  • Wooden pump components (pipe, screw) cannot be used to safely pump magma. The pump will catch on fire and then deconstruct after pumping a few dozen tiles of magma.
  • Wooden pumps cannot be safely submerged in magma.
  • Wooden pumps can safely be used to pump water.
  • Wooden pumps can safely be submerged in water.

I haven't tested whether a pump with wooden pump components but a magma safe block is safe when submerged in magma.

Some fairly thorough testing that I performed showed that wooden pumps could safely pump magma as long as they had no flowing magma on the z level below or above them actually.  But this was in 40d, I have yet to test with 2010.

Would it not be possible to mod the entire brewing process now with custom workshops etc to be more realistic?

and while we are talking about this, why doesn't the kitchen require some fuel for cooking?

I am sure someone could mod this, heck I might even try my hand at it.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Annoying Immigrants...
« on: April 23, 2010, 05:54:01 pm »
I handle the issue of migrants by setting up a meeting area only accessible to new arrivals on the map edge.  Said meeting area just happens to be situated inside one of my specialty instant fill/reset drowning chambers.  It also works well as a trap for invaders which prefer to path to the only accessible meeting area instead of my trade depot/airlock (which is, of course, also a drowning chamber).

Dead migrants might as well be no migrants at all, save the occasional free axes and picks etc.

Keep playing, eventually you will learn to plan around the myriad little idiosyncrasies the dwarves have, then you can truly appreciate when you inadvertently send 75% of your population to their deaths due to some minor oversight.

#1 thing to keep in mind is IT IS ONLY PIXELS ON A SCREEN FOR CHRISSAKES, GET A F*ING GRIP MAN!  8) ;)

What I think is going on is when two dwarfs or animals are on the same space there is move out of the way check of some kind. Sometimes they move over the well and fall in. The more dwarfs on one tile the higher chance you have of someone falling in.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: How do you deal with aquifiers?
« on: April 20, 2010, 04:46:55 pm »
1 the site finder is pretty bad, what you're seeing is normal operation.

2 Aquifers can be modded out or you can mess with custom worldgen settings.

3 You can pierce an aquifer layer by collapsing natural walls from above into a channeled hole.

From my explorations so far, a 3x3 pretty much guarantees blue stuff.

But worldgen craziness is always a factor to consider as well.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Tapping a volcano
« on: April 19, 2010, 04:03:39 pm »
You know, you could just tap it at the top.  ::)

This is ok if you only need a small amount of magma, but if you want to fill a magma moat or supply an obsidian farm you will need more than what you can get off the top layer.  Yes they refill, but not at a rate that will keep up with even a modest obsidian farm.

At work I use an ascii tileset (to the uninitiated, the ascii looks work-related, almost), at home I use maydays.

Use an expendable dwarf with a cheap pick.

The goal is to flood the entire outside edge of the embark area with magma.

Just a little heads up here; In the current version magma flows off the edge of the map, so you are not going to get magma moats like in the previous version.

DF General Discussion / Re: Shaded tileset/graphics backgrounds?

The d# version was a rework of the display functions to use opengl and supported .png files with alpha transparency.  Toady has not merged this functionality into the new version yet, and I am sure there will be an announcement when it is completed.

Make all the polls you want, if Toady doesn't want it, he is not going to add it.
