DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Exploits
« on: July 15, 2009, 04:30:23 pm »
Hello, fellow dwarven gods. Lets collect some exploits and imbalances that make the game too easy.

My share:
The price of prepared food. Especially lavish meals. A single good cook can easily produce enough value to buy out even the first autumn caravan. A stack of staple food roast goes for up to several thousands of dwarfbucks. Later, when ingredients like cheese or dwarven milk become available, prices rise obscenely high. 15000 and more are totally normal then. With maximum value ingredients and a legendary cook, the value can and sometimes does reach 7 digit numbers. So forget your export rock mugs and platinum statues. They are just a waste of time and workforce.

For the civ, you basically need to get lucky with worldgen wars and have "Require Playable Civilization: No" in your parameters.  There's a few threads around here with dwarfless worldgens.

Couldnt find useful information. Having no dwarf civ meant no dwarf fortress option in the start menu.

Postninja fake edit: Max pop 1?  Oooh, may have to try that.

Tried it, didn't work. Just got an outpost liason and migrants.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Magma Pipes in Glaciers

So, should I dig for the magma now...

Simple question: Why not?
It takes you only one miner for a couple of days or weeks. I can't imagine how this might outweigth the waste of even a single unit of a scarce resource.

one male, one female, on a map where the home civ is 100% dead..   no caravans, no immigrants, only babies...    lots and lots of babies

How did you do that? I don't know how to kill a dwarf, let alone a whole civ.

I could do it with walls too, since monsters cant destroy walls.

Walls give the enemy cover against your archers. I even chop down all trees in the defence area to minimize cover. Don't know if its useful, though.

So watchtowers are better off with just one floor/none at all.

None is a bad idea, because the enemy archers technically stand behind (your) fortfications as soon they reach the tower wall. With all according defense bonus.

So you want to keep them some tiles away from your tower anyway, which will alongside solve the blind angle problem. Surround your tower with a moat in 5 tiles distance for example and you can build this tower 5 levels high without blind zone and enemy movement zone overlapping.  Make this tower accessible only from underground and the defense is relatively idiot proof.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Face Palm moments you had

On my third fortress, at the ocean shore:

"Oh, i killed my first fire imp, must be valuable, I'll butcher it."

2 minutes later: "Smoke in my food store? Fu... The booze is on fire!"

20 minutes and some useless efforts to save the situation later: the last tantrum-crippled dwarf dies of thirst

*sigh*
