If I am not mistaken...each line of marines/enemies starts a certain distance from one another...each round the forces move towards each other and when a weapon is in range they fire away

You can only force convert nobodies...no nation leaders sadly...and no pope...and yes you get a bonus for sacrificing the pope...it is a steam achievment and it gives a good chunk of piety. I recommend doing it at least once for the fun of it but unless you are trying to pump up your score or piety the 250 ransom is usually more worthwhile

Its especially satisfying if you have the luck to capture the pope himself. Easy 250 gold for ransom or the lovely satisfaction of sacrificing him at a blot

I was actually working towards that...then a large series of civil wars and other issues kept me distracted and I never got around to it and then Abassid came down on me

Yeah upgrading is kinda all or nothing...you generally want to upgrade as many as possible to max...all the buildings you can since they are mostly bought with prestige

Alright...bout to fire this up for the first time...lets see how this goes
