DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Ouch ... you ok buddy?
« on: October 17, 2009, 07:28:11 am »
As mentioned, she will be in bed for ever, unless you use a cheat program to make her regrow the arm. Otherwise, the best use is as a guard/royal guard.

Yes, dwarves are all buried, this includes the goblin dwarves, caravan dwarves, and even dwarves coming out of [SPOILER]. A dwarf is a dwarf, and as such, deserves proper burial.

DF General Discussion / Re: Dwarf Fortress Talk #4: Topic Vote
« on: October 17, 2009, 07:20:37 am »
I've voted world gen, it just seems to me like that would fit in perfectly with the last topic. And I just find it very interesting.

The mauling was a very close second choice though, so I hope we get that as an extra.

DF General Discussion / Re: Dwarf Fortress Talk #3: Feedback
« on: October 16, 2009, 06:02:20 pm »
This was a very nice thing to listen to, I couldn't wait for tomorrow, so I've just listened to it now(1:00 am here in west Europe).

As for feedback, the content was good, I liked the bit at the end, some parts had me smiling(Which is a lot for me).

Quality, format, they all seem good, answers to questions were detailed and interesting to listen to, which is definitely a good thing.

The only thing I kind of missed a little was being able to have the questions thread open while listening, so I could type whatever questions I came up with right away, instead of maybe remembering them later, though I'm probably going to listen to it again tomorrow or after that, at a time I'm not supposed to be sleeping.

DF General Discussion / Re: Too Dangerous for Migrants
« on: October 14, 2009, 05:05:16 pm »
It also seems that later on, you need a lot more wealth to get migrants, I might even claim it goes up exponentially, but I really don't pay attention to the actual numbers, I always end up having too many dwarves anyway.

A noble getting killed has a -very- big effect on the migration though.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Magma Meets Water
« on: October 13, 2009, 08:34:45 am »
When making obsidian, try to add water to magma, not the other way around.

It's a lot easier to clear away excess water then it is to get rid of extra magma.

I also believe it's 2/7+ magma, and 2/7+ water, and never had any problems with it, except for when some noble decided not to pull the lever shutting off the water in his room.
(This can be read in 2 ways, and both are correct, I was using the same lever to flood his room and to add the water to the magma.)

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: How do I force my wounded dwarf to rest?
« on: October 13, 2009, 07:02:56 am »
As mentioned, a yellow spine will never heal, lock him in his office and occasionally have dwarves toss in food and drink through the ceiling. If he goes hauling he will just drop the items halfway there, and no matter the toughness, a broken spine means he can only crawl(As far as I know).

Your clerk is never going to get up again, but that won't stop him from doing his job with the records.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Death Wish
« on: October 12, 2009, 11:29:26 am »
The details here:

A novice swimmer can climb out of the water, while a dabbling or below swimmer can not, some dwarves have been reported to have enough toughness to reach novice or above in the swimming skill, leading to them surviving the whole "water" thing.

Without novice or above swimming skill, they won't even think about surfacing to get air, they will panic from being submerged in water, and will also refuse to make their own ramps/stairs out, in case of a miner in the water.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: soap construction?
« on: October 12, 2009, 11:23:32 am »
From my knowledge, only stone blocks are used, but I think I could experiment by locking a moody dwarf somewhere with a workshop, and only dropping a wooden block in.

Besides that, soap is a bar, and the only bars used for moods are specified to be metal, so no soap axes, charcoal crossbows, ash swords, or pearlash maces.

Moody dwarves will also only ask for glass when you have had (Raw) glass before, even if it's the crystal kind, and you're out of rock crystals without any sand. As far as I know, glass blocks are also ignored.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: how to fire crossbow
« on: October 12, 2009, 06:33:51 am »
There is no friendly fire in DF.

Yes there is, just set the ground under them on fire.

As for the topic, yes, for ranged weapons there is no (ranged)friendly fire, but as soon as you're the enemy of a civilisation/faction all your shots will hurt them. It doesn't matter if you punch the mayor in the face, mangling his brain, or steal a worthless item from a shop, everything counts equal for them.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: goblin caravan?
« on: October 12, 2009, 06:29:50 am »
Very rarely there is a world where the goblins are at peace with the dwarves, and they will trade with you.

It's usually not much, but it sure beats the elves, but do note that the trading will not stop them from sending snatchers, ambushes and sieges, those are hardcoded into their snatcher tag, which is in the vanilla goblins. I'm not sure if you have modded the goblins, but removing the tag will increase the chance for peaceful goblins by a lot(Since their wars are usually started over stealing children).

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Dwarven mass suicide & bonus questions
« on: October 12, 2009, 06:25:24 am »
To expand on that, dragons are immune to dragonfire, not to magma or regular fire. Even though he may think he is.(Actually, everything thinks it is immune to fire)

I'd suggest you set at least 15 wrestlers on it, not that you really need that many, as legendary wrestlers will be able to dodge almost everything the dragon does(So 10 should be enough), but with wrestlers, they hold down the opponent, and 15 dwarves hold things better then 10. Just don't get them hit by fire breath, and if they do, station them in water/make them walk through water/drop them into water.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: My dwarves refuse to cut down trees
« on: October 11, 2009, 12:44:25 pm »
If all else fails, wall around the area you want to cut, put in a dwarf, lock the door, and tell the dwarf to cut, he should have no choice but to do as you tell him.

Hmm, a while back there was a thread about idle dwarves going to where they were last stuck, did a mason or something happen to get stuck while building that wall?

Besides that, I've heard fortress/royal guards try to go out to where a dwarf last died, so if they are going there, there's not a lot you can do about it.
