DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Goblin livestock?
« on: March 19, 2010, 08:29:08 am »
That would be for the modding forum, but yes, it is possible, it includes changing around a few tags, and is rather easy when you know how.

Nope, I don't know how, but I'm sure many others do.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Destroying constructed things...
« on: March 19, 2010, 08:27:44 am »
Just for some extra information, any dwarf can and will do this(Including children and nobles). Dwarves will not hesitate to remove the floor that's the only thing keeping the tile they stand on from cave-in, and they don't even care if they remove the floor they are standing on(Even mothers with their children, many dwarven kids die every day when their mother destroys the floor they stood on).

Use cautiously, unless you're using it for the Fun.

I've had fortresses made just for this, masterwork steel/obsidian weapons for everyone, no armour, 5z levels channel all around the barracks(And some in the middle of it, no wrestling, no well.

If a dwarf is worthy of the military, he will survive until championship, after which he gets his very own room in the real fort.(legendaries can be given rooms after economy sets in.), engraved, and every piece of furniture made from his/her favourite materials. He is then put off duty, and only activated to fight off attacks. One champion can destroy entire goblin sieges, and they regularly do.

I've had sparring injuries where limbs were cut off and landed 6 tiles away, lungs and hearths pierced, dwarves hammered off the barracks, into a wall and then into the channels, and if one of those legendary socialite noble kids comes in..Better watch out for the huge stats they get, even with regular sparring weapons and no skill they can kill..And I'm giving them masterwork steel.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: sand bags everywhere

There is a button you can press on the furniture stockpiles just like cooked meals for food stockpiles.

I think it was 'u', press it once on a stockpile to turn sand bags off for that stockpile.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Sleep Tantruming?
« on: March 18, 2010, 05:15:51 am »

However, I have seen tantruming dwarves destroy normal doors and workshops.

I've seen a tantruming dwarf destroy bridges, so not even those are safe. Also, it was over a 7-8z drop and one of the most crowded hallways in my fortress.

Tantruming dwarves may break doors, or just toss them, but berserk dwarves behave no different from the dwarves that come with goblin invasions. Strangely, berserk dwarves are less angry then tantruming dwarves, after all, what kind of berserker can't even break down a door when he's in his berserk rage, while he can do it when just 'moderately pissed off'?

So what do I do with these idiots? Can I save them by taking them back to their home towns or should I just charge something nasty with my mighty mini army of 11 year olds?  ???

I believe you can free them by talking to their parents, if they're still alive(The parents), or retiring in the town and then starting your adventure again.

Retiring will make you lose all your companions though.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Areas with a lot of resources...

I've seen several maps that had about as much ore as regular stone, and then there's loads of maps where you're going to be hard pressed to find even a single vein.

What really topped it off was digging a shaft down 7 layers of rock in one of my earliest forts and finding, in this order;

Magnetite, magnetite, coal, magnetite, galena, galena, and then one of the other iron ores(Hematite, malachite..No idea, something iron-y)

There was no magma, but the coal helped with that.

Edit: listed 6 as the number before, but that's just me being bad at counting.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Sleep Tantruming?
« on: March 17, 2010, 10:52:56 am »
Whether or not a dwarf is sleeping doesn't matter for when the tantrum happens.

They may just as well wake up during a tantrum sleep and the first thing they do is picking up their own bed and tossing it out of the door.

I suggest you lock the doors.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Interesting Situation

You could try embarking on a wordgen road (the ones that humans build between their cities). You can use remove construction on these to get stone.

edit: Or embark ON a human city. You can deconstruct their buildings and eat their food. If you are lucky, they will have a water filled pit your dwarves can drink out of too.

And if you're REALLY lucky, they will have a temple full of magma. Really, some of them have that, many adventurers retire by jumping in. It's just nearly impossible to find those temples.

Besides the already posted locking a door, you may want to check if you still control the door.

As soon as a hostile, even a sneaking kobold, goes on the same square as the door you need to send a dwarf over to stand on the door, or you can't lock it at all.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: All my maps are filled with water...
« on: March 16, 2010, 01:56:35 pm »
I think the question has been answered, but just for the record, if they're full squares of light blue then it means it's an outside tile 2 z levels above the ground.

If they're blue double ~'s, then it's water. if it really is water then there are 2 things that might be the case.

1. Oceans, try other locations.
2. a bug, it may help to download a new installation file.

Most likely I would like to say, Welcome to 3d dwarf fortress, you can move up/down on the z-axle with < and >

AND THERE IS 3 PAGES OF CHILDREN AND BABIES!

Oh fucking hell, here I come...The water's 3/7 minimally now, everywhere.

Fun fact

Mothers drop their babies at 4/7 or 5/7 water if it's flowing, and babies can drown in it if you're not careful.

Someone even made a baby-removal-tool with flowing water over a hallway that ended in a deep pit. You don't have to feel bad for just killing dwarves once, there are entire forts build around the idea that if dwarves are kept miserable enough they will slaughter eachother and make items out of their former friends' bones and skins.

If you have not yet gotten any other races whatsoever in the 3.5 years, then chances are they won't show. Always check what races have access before abandoning.

As for next update, you can see for yourself and draw conclusions.. Some things may make it harder, some things may make it easier.

I think you actually can re-arm and get rid of companions by retiring somewhere, but I don't know, I never lived that long.

Traveling doesn't replace anything as mentioned, and it won't fix wounds that won't heal in fortress mode either, so lose a lung, mangled hearth, etc and you're still going down. Not that those will let you fast travel, you can't do that with a lethal wound.

Since this has been bumped again.(Didn't want to do a triple post)

My dwarf died in the fortress mode let's play, but if that wasn't a dwarven death, I don't know what is. Killed by goblins and then given a magma burial that also burned his killers. I'm sure he would be proud of whoever pulled that lever.

Anyway, I hope having the mayor and one of the original 7 die doesn't get you a tantrum spiral, and I guess it hasn't if there's no problem by now. If there's another free dwarf or you run out of names, I'd like to request an XSI II(Preferably a military dwarf with axe or spear, maybe a marksdwarf if you want to resort to cowardly shooting things from a distance). And I'd recommend you fill the pit under the Gravitron with magma, because everything is better with magma.
Also, arena fights are a bit less spectacular when there enemy has been caged before that, they will be in running away mode, which let's dwarves always have the first hit, and they will only retaliate and try to run, unless wrestled.

Too bad I missed the stream, but I'm sure there will be more, still enjoying all your videos.

And for LCS, if you recruit a dog, I'd like the dog to be named after me, since I've always wondered what stats dogs have, might be something unexpected like the prositute with 5.00 skill in flamethrower I found in my game. Where can you get flamethrowers anyway?

For M&B, I'd like to suggest you switch the party member's dresses every now and then, maybe a nice pink one would look good on Marnid.
Edit: and if you're going to keep fighting khergits, get more riding skill, it will make you go faster. Athletics is for movement speed without horse, and athletics 10 on a barely naked character makes him/her go as fast as a slow horse.
