DF Bug Reports / Re: 40a display update issues
« on: August 19, 2008, 05:41:28 am »
I understand the yellow X problem as it's described, but like I said, it's not happening here, because the black spaces are being printed for me.

It only happens when the mini-map thing is being displayed, for some reason.

Unfortunately lone cats don't do too well against a horde of goblins.

As a cheap lurker, I followed the rise and fall of Boatmurdered from the beginning. It's really quite amazing, especially StarkRavingMad's turn. Clapcraft is shaping up to become a disaster (in a good way!) as well!

DF Bug Reports / Crash! Receive job pay: NULL JOB
« on: November 06, 2007, 07:19:00 pm »
I'm a few years into my fortress now, and I just had a crash. I looked at the error log, and this is the last line: Receive job pay: NULL JOB

I've been minting a few coins, but the economy hasn't started yet (if it even works like in the older versions?). This is the first appearance of this error message in errorlog.txt. Coincidence or cause of the crash?

DF Bug Reports / Re: Very slow framerate?
« on: October 29, 2007, 07:27:00 pm »
Some observations. I started a fortress on a flat bit of land, and started digging down. I get 100fps while viewing the surface layer, but when I move up or down the z axis it drops to 20ish. But it's always 100 on the surface.

Also, I don't remember if it was like this in the older versions, but if I have the list of commands open I get about 5-10 more frames per second than if I have the entire window be the play area. This would make sense if the game had to draw complex graphics... but just a few simple tiles less to draw and the FPS increases by 10? Crazy!

I can see it now.

Construct klaxon:

You need cats and mechanisms!

DF Suggestions / Re: Restrict CPU usage
« on: August 22, 2006, 05:46:00 am »
I too have an a64 CPU, but it seems to work fine for me. Could it, strangely enough, be a graphics card issue (I have an ATI X800)?

When in a menu, Fraps tells me it runs in 64 fps and uses 0% CPU load. When in the game, my current fortress runs in 50ish fps and uses about 20% cpu load.

DF Suggestions / Re: Tone down ratmen
« on: October 01, 2006, 10:32:00 am »
Ratmen got mighty annoyed at me because I made an error when trying to make a magma moat. I ended up pouring magma irrevocably into the chasm.

After a while I got waves of attacks, with maybe 10-15 ratmen in each. But they stopped appearing after four or five waves. I guess they're either limited in numbers, or the fiery red death raining down on them from above had something to do with it.

So, if they don't stop coming, you know what to try...

Curses / Re: Back to the dwarf game...
« on: July 04, 2006, 04:48:00 pm »
Oh man. I've been planning to make a zombie rogue-like too for a while. I got started maybe a year ago, then got distracted by other things, and due to laziness I've kept procrastinating!

I intend to go graphical though. The IVAN look is pretty much what I had in mind. Something like this: http://www.achtungfranz.com/z-los2.png

Please excuse the programmer art (and the ninja (and the crude LOS)), it is temporary. Everything is very temporary. I know a pixel artist who I'm sure won't be able to resist replacing my feeble attempts at serviceable tiles once the game is done.

I should get back on track! Why haven't I gotten back on track!

« on: June 11, 2007, 11:07:00 am »
Hooray, just a few days ago I was wondering whether someone's picked up the source code and done anything with it yet or not. Good work, I think all the changes you've made are good ones.

I have a suggestion/request/plea for the next version:

Tone down the police snipers!

I had forgotten how annoying I used to find them! I've played 3.10a5 a few times now, been sieged twice after having fortified for a siege, and both times my squad leader was sniped on the first day! Sheez, you'd think he'd have the brains to stay away from the windows!

who cares what a game looks like if it has solid and fun gameplay?

I have a feeling this is the reason Spore has been delayed. Someone at the office said "ok, this is cool, I like the creatures you can make and all... but where's the game?" That they somewhat recently hired Soren Johnson (lead designer on Civ4) also suggests that they haven't really managed to turn the fascinating simulator into a fun game quite yet.

DF General Discussion / Re: Tile Graphics? Need Help?
« on: August 17, 2006, 08:29:00 am »
Those tiles look nice, except for one thing: the blood!

That's something I've always liked in ASCII rogue-likes with blood (though only DF and DoomRL comes to mind at the moment), it looks really visceral the way it covers walls and floors. Sends a shiver down my spine.

Little tiles of blood doesn't look nearly as gruesome, but I suppose you could algorithmically draw the blood as it appears, and not worry about tiles. In fact, IVAN maybe did this, I don't remember.

The first artifact I got was "Skirtmesses the Deep Dead".

A tin amulet that menaces with spikes of tin.

Tin! Decorated only with spikes of even more tin! Somehow I am less than impressed!
