DF General Discussion / Re: Too much necro towers?
« on: July 09, 2014, 12:31:47 am »
Necromantic civilizations expanding during world generation is almost certainly a feature.

Every single tower having it's own entry in the neighbours list and causing said list to overflow the bottom of the window border is almost certainly a bug.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Need a little help with trading
« on: June 30, 2014, 07:08:55 am »
Merchants dissatisfied with your trade can only make a counter-offer by adding more of your goods to your side of the trade; they can't remove any of their goods from their side of the trade.

So you only get the "With your trade goods such as they are. I can't fathom you ending with all of those items" message (which gives very poor feedback on how much profit the merchants want) if you try to trade all (or nearly all) of your goods at once, and you don't have enough additional goods in the depot for the merchants to make a counter-offer acceptable to them.

You can get better feedback by making multiple smaller trades, each of which leaves enough untraded goods on your side for a counter-offer.

Just a quick note on early cooking: if you use the one-kind-of-every-meat trick to get free barrels, it won't do you any good unless you start cooking right away. Otherwise, the meat just sits in the barrels. And don't forget to hit z > Kitchen and turn off cooking of plump helmets and any aboveground crops you may have gathered!

It's possible to consolidate your initial meat supply by dividing the amount of meat by 15 (round up) and creating a meat stockpile of that size. The dwarves will haul meat barrels to that stockpile until it's full, and then they'll take the barrels from that stockpile to the wagon, fill them up with the remaining meat, and take the full barrels back to the stockpile, leaving empty barrels in the wagon. It may speed things up if you create another much larger meat stockpile and make that one give to the smaller one, but I don't think it's strictly necessary; the empty barrels in the wagon prove that at least some of the hauling jobs only involved one stockpile.

DF General Discussion / Re: What's your mandate?
« on: May 27, 2014, 02:17:23 am »
TheBeardyMan has mandated the production of Bumble Bee Wax Crowns.

P.S. Not because I actually make them; just because it's the ultimate thing for a Dwarf Fortress Noble to mandate to troll the player. Seriously, is there anyone who doesn't think wax worker has overtaken the likes of cheese maker and soap maker as the most useless profession?

Dear Urist McWoodcutter,

What weapon did I tell you to use when I drafted you and told you to kill that monkey?
What weapon did you have in your hand until you decided to drop it and take it back to the weapon stockpile?
Hint: they both start with "A".

Regards,
Frustrated Overseer.

DF General Discussion / Re: Plants!
« on: March 31, 2014, 01:37:59 am »
I'm just waiting for the first person to post when someone gets murdered by a falling coconut.

*Checks plant list*

Oh wait, that seems to be the only plant to not make the list.

Very well, anyone up for loading catapults with watermelons?

Of all the plants on that list, wouldn't durians make the best catapult ammo?

DF General Discussion / Re: "I was robbed properly today"

Toady seems to constantly mix his real-life stories and in-game stories in the updates. The other day he talked about his car being deteriorated by rodents or something.

And even that story can be read for 15 words before you realize that he's not talking about Dwarf Fortress.

General Discussion / Re: Terrible Jokes

A games programmer is at a job interview at Electronic Arts. As the interview comes to an end, the interviewer glances at the programmer's résumé, and notices that it says "please turn over" at the bottom. He turns it over, but finds that the other side is blank.

The interviewer asks "Where's the rest of your résumé?"

The programmer replies "Oh, that's downloadable content. It costs an extra $10".

Did you hear about the crocodile with false teeth?

The birds refused to clean them on the grounds that it was in-denture servitude.

Q: What did one tile say when the other tile offered him a glass of port?

A: No thanks, it's bad for my grout.

DF Suggestions / Re: Option for 'beekeepers avoid wild hives'
« on: January 12, 2014, 08:42:20 am »
Yes, burrowing can fix this, but there's a certain amount of collateral involved.
I've also encountered this problem. What exactly do I need to do to make burrows and beekeeping work well together?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: powering the millstone
« on: October 25, 2013, 01:45:51 am »
Windmills only transfer their power directly down from their center tile. Millstones can be powered from any side, as well as above and below.
Not below. It may be possible in theory, but in order to build or use a millstone, a dwarf has to stand in the same cell, and if the millstone is receiving power from below, that cell won't have a floor. So the millstone will:
  • Be unbuildable: if you build the power supply from below first then try to build the millstone
  • Be unusable: if you build the millstone with an alternative power supply from another side first, then build the power supply from below, then remove the alternative power supply
  • Collapse: if you build the millstone with no alternative power supply first, then build the power supply from below

Dwarven Space program.

And here you though the *kerbal* rockets exploded a lot.

But how would you stop the Dwarves from drinking the rocket fuel?

Vowel elision might be an OK choice for abbreviating text for which we know the original (e.g. custom names and profession names that we type in ourselves), but it's confusing when used to abbreviate the names of geographical features that we don't know when selecting an embark site. Word wrapping would be a better choice for fitting those names on the screen.
