DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Carving Sheer Cliff Walls?
« on: November 14, 2009, 02:46:57 am »
If you plan on smoothing/engraving the cliff face, carve scaffolding first. Do this by lining the entire face with up/down stair-cases and up-stairs at the bottom. When done smoothing/engraving, you can safely channel away the scaffolding.

Good break down slink. I'll have to try this.

1) Can a waterwheel be arranged to run off an artificial waterfall, resulting in the normal 100 power (which would also allow it to be pumped back to the source, with your power gain growing the more z-levels you drop it through waterfalls without it hitting a reservoir). And/or: will arranging it so that an artificial water supply flows under a waterwheel before dropping again result in power?

I don't think you can put a waterwheel in the waterfall itself, but you can put it just before or after it. I haven't tested this though.

I DO know that power from waterwheels is not realistic. No laws of thermodynamics here. You can build perpetual motion machines that generate excess power. You can easily pump your water back up to the top of the waterfall and then some.

Honestly you're in for a huge headache. I wouldn't even bother.

Fortunately Toady appears to be supporting this idea in the next version with personal armor/weapon stands.

Edit the raws to remove cave adaption (makes no sense anyway...).

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Magma and Lignite

Meh, because furniture takes 3 bars per.

I'd worry more about armour, but whatever.

Yeah I modded coal and lignite to give 20 and 10 bars of coke respectivly. Makes no sense for a chunk of raw coal big enough to make a WALL out of to only give you 3 bars. Reduces micromanagement a bit.

It's an abstraction, along with most other features of DF. It's not supposed to be an accurate quantity.

Another method is to use the Reveal utility. But first make a copy of your save folder. After you use Reveal, delete the save folder you used it with and replace it with the copy you made earlier. This is critical if you want to make magma forges and grow towercaps (Revealed save folders have also been reported to cause the game to crash).

Note that Reveal shows EVERYTHING you have on your map, down to the last piece of orthoclase. So don't use it if you don't want any sort of spoilers.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Risks with magma monsters
« on: November 12, 2009, 02:16:26 am »
I always just build fortifications as my anti-magma creatures screen. Usually about three, and a decent length tunnel to carry it all away from the magma pipe. Never have any problems after that :)

Ditto.

I also build my magma forges, smelters, etc, where the block part is placed directly over the hole. That way even if they squeeze through the fortification (I've seen it happen once, I think it's a glitch), they can't get through the shop's magma hole and none of my dwarves can fall in.

Fire snakes will always be a problem unless you transport the magma out of the biome you get it from since they "teleport." Never build directly over or next to the pipe if you use wood (such as bins for metal bars).

The next version should solve or at least reduce this kind of silliness. At the pace Toady is going now it should be out in a couple of months (speculation on my part).

You'd be better off digging away the sand walls and replacing them with block walls.

What I didn't know is that there was a cave with a very angry dragon living inside.

Wow that's lucky. Capture it and set up an epic arena.

You said "engravers" - plural.  I had one engraver smoothing my fort of 80, that's all he did, and he was legendary fast - now he's L+5 and starting to engrave.  Anything before that is (again) a waste of raw materials. (If you have the surface area to smooth, 2 is fine - but if you're running out of surface, 2 "really good" engravers is nowhere as useful as one legendary a little later on.)

I once had 3 engravers. 2 masters and 1 legendary +3. The legendary would smooth stone faster than the two masters combined. Unfortunately he liked taking lots of breaks :(

I'd love to see an update down the road that includes the hazards of certain ores.

DF General Discussion / Re: Do you savescum?

Losing is fun, but rebuilding from a loss is not.

I like to watch disasters happen, and then save scum to just before the glitch or mistake.

Ya know, I bought some of that stuff when I collected rocks as a kid. I had no idea it was bismuth.
