DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Bookkeeper Precision

I always mean to leave it at medium, because it's all you really need and in my experience it does prevent the stone category lag lurking in the stocks menu.  I can never say no to all that easy experience, though, and usually end up setting it to highest anyway.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Using your adventurer to help your fortress
« on: September 10, 2008, 01:30:19 pm »
I've seen magma transport plans that involved building two forts next to each other, one with a magma pipe and a large pump-filled reservoir with spill gates at the map edge, the second with a collection ditch and pool/magma-duct. Built, set up, and abandon each, then you go back as an adventurer and pull the lever, allowing the magma to flow out of the reservoir and across the map boundary into the collection area.

It can be used to transport large quantities of magma to areas with none, potentially over great distances and through multiple transport-forts. Could be used to move water, too, I suppose.

Has anyone successfully done this?  My experience with damming a river seemed to indicate that chages in flows only register when the part of the map that created them is currently 'visible' as part of an active adventurer or dwarf fortress game.  That is, when I showed up as an adventurer to the dam I'd built previously, the part downriver started off full then started to drain while I was in the area.  Makes me figure that a long-range aquaduct would only work if you walked up and down its length as an adventurer or included the source in your fort.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Good mandate processor designs?

I got a dwarfuchet working in the 2-d version.  It was tricky, since the dwarf had to be in just the right spot to get flung by the raising bridge; I ended up using multiple levers to accommodate nobles of different speeds.  Note that dwarves got flung away from the side that was raised; they did not get catapulted like I intially assumed.

It was a pain but it was all worth it once I successfully tossed that worthless purple bastard into the magma river...

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Goblins can absail!?

I had a siege a few days ago where one squad spawned partially within but mostly outside of my walls, basically straddling them.  Wasn't near the edge, altho it's a two tile embark area so I guess everything is near the edge

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Doors: Set as internal - uses

I don't think external doors currently count towards the room value, so setting as internal would be good for a particularly valuable door.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Epic families
« on: August 25, 2008, 03:57:58 pm »
It might new with .40, or it might be because my current fort is the first reclaimed fort I've played for any length of time, but for the first time I have a fort populated with large, totally badass families.  One is headed by the dwarf who basically founded the fortress--he did most of the mining and dominated my initial military with eight notable kills and 26 others, enough to earn him the name 'Singed Lizard of Barricading'.  With his wife the broker (who's in line to be mayor), he has two sons and two daughters.  Another family is a married pair of titled champion sworddwarves with 27 notable kills between them.  One of the kills was a third champion, tragically killed in a sparring accident.  As the only champions left, the couple is about as deadly as most of the rest of my fort combined.  So far they've had three sons, but their eldest was kidnapped by a goblin.  With any luck, they will someday reunite in battle...

Is this anything new?  In all of my former forts, few important dwarves ended up married and families stayed small.  My first thought was that this could be a stab toward solving the impending problem with finishing the army arc: where do you get the cannon fodder necessary to make enough sieges to keep dwarf mode fun and challenging?  Boosting the birthrate is a start, at least.  My second thought was that this is awesome, and there's gotta be people out there with even more awesome families than mine, spanning generations even.  Are other interesting family behaviors possible right now, like family vs. family grudges?

There's an invasions toggle in the init file; I don't know why it would be turned off but you might want to double-check.

I experienced this bug, but the spam ended after I killed the goblin that had wounded her and ended the siege that it came in with.

I call it a bug, but ironically it actually saved that dwarf.  If the rest job had gone through, she would have walked right in front of the remaining goblins.  As it was, she basically hid in the woods until it was safe.  It was actually pretty cool.

I recommend considering a fort next to a major river.  My current fort, "Legendford," is mostly built into a bridge crossing a major river.  The two-level aquifer was a bitch, but even with a dozen dwarves fishing off my pier, I don't think the fish will ever run out.  I even get bi-yearly salmon runs.

Rockfinders Wall.
Thats so far the most extensive building I've built.

That "moat" is actually a wall of water.  :P

For the record this was built before rectangle construction designations.

Pretty sure I have carpel tunnel because of it.
those things are gonna be a mainstay once siegers start mining, I think

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Floors off of Bridges

I'm building some defences using this trick.  Although I haven't tested it yet (do those collapses destroy the bridge you're building off of?), my only fear is that it will be overpowered.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What special rooms do you build?
« on: July 15, 2008, 03:04:42 pm »
Other than a number of towers (mostly defensive, but also serving as silos/keeps) the only 'nonstandard room' I have is a vomitorium.  It's at the bottom of a shaft that goes about 7 z-levels up to the surface, walled off to prevent archers looking over the edge.  It was supposed to be my outdoor farm until I found out that only indoor plants grow on muddy stone.  I've filled it up with green statues and armor stands to serve as mock trees and some olivine floors for astroturf.  Now, the dwarves can enjoy a little piece of the outdoors right in the center of my fortress.

Naturally, it's covered with vomit, although less than when I first built it; seems to be working.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: How much is too much food?
« on: July 15, 2008, 02:48:28 pm »
Sounds to me like it's time to move all your food-related dwarves over to militia duty for a couple years.  Then, whenever you face a particularly nasty threat, your professional military will have some backup; personally, I stick to crossbows so I don't risk them getting injured on the front lines.  Just don't let them train up to Elite so you can switch them back after your food stores get low again (or if you need some heavy hauling done).

Goons telling you you need more moderation is like the elves telling you how horrible you are for cutting down trees--neither surprising nor worth listening to.  Heavy-handed moderation is SA's gimmick.  There's no reason to worry about flame wars or 'bad posters' in a backwater bb like this.  If you don't want to read them, then don't click the links, don't type the replies, etc etc.

Sappers should be able to be toggled in the init file; that way people who are looking for a challenge can have them while those who aren't won't have to worry about the integrity of their fort.
