Creative Projects / Re: Dungeon Denizens - Polling for artist interest
« on: October 04, 2011, 04:11:49 pm »
I hope you realise the gravity of this request - especially considering how difficult it'd be to get consistent art for anything involving two or more artists. This artist group here is rather ragtag (and I mean this with no offense intended, honestly) too, and I remember a card game pitch like this before that went down the drain because of it.

There is also a large volume of art involved with making a card game - in M:TG alone, I'd expect there to be thousands if not more pieces of art, all cropped and downsized to fit the scale. That requires commitment, time and above all immense effort (made even more unlikely by the fact that everything for this will be pro bono).

That said, I'd be willing to contribute with some card art (just not right now; maybe in a week or two), but I don't think I have the art style or use the medium you're looking for. If you're fine with pencil, however, I'll be here and I'll be willing - just tell me what I need to do and by when.

EDIT: Fixed ramblings.

<Double post for justice!>

Where has everybody gone?

I've said this before, but I'm very busy right now - what with the results coming out soon - and even if I had the time, I'd be too preoccupied with procrastinating on having fun in Minecraft.

That said, I still manage most of my duties here, even though there hasn't been very many of them as of late.

General Discussion / Re: Do you know how to code?

Also, avoid c like the plague. Powerful, sure, but if it ain't OOP then it is more trouble than it is worth.

I disagree. There are plenty of languages out there not abiding by the OOP paradigm that are still good; OOP doesn't make a language magically easier or better.

C still has real-world utility. If you want to do systems programming, you'll want C (Linux is in C, for example), and iPhone programming is done on what is essentially an extended version of C (which, unlike C++, retains full compatibility).

I can't answer most of your questions, being but a hobbyist, but I've got a workable knowledge of C++. It's enough for me to reasonably be able to program what I'd like to, and I don't have much ambition beyond that.

I'm messing around with Haskell and Java, but that's nowhere near practical yet.

A rough estimate of how long it would take to become -decent- at coding *INSERT LANGUAGE HERE* would be nice, too.

Depends on what "decent" is for you. Expect it to probably be on the level of years for some skill, though.

Before anyone asks, the Open ("normal") server is already updated to 1.8.1, and Project (currently running 1.7) will be updated with the arrival of 1.9.

Maybe we should just start ignoring those kind of posts, they'll read the OP eventually, even without our prompting

If they didn't in the first place, chances are they won't think of it until someone prompts them.

Besides, it's good manners to reply if someone asks something.

Life Advice / Re: Trying to find a Video Card Upgrade for my Old Computer
« on: September 29, 2011, 05:40:44 pm »
PCI, as mentioned by those before me, limits your options greatly. I'd normally recommend saving your money from now on or splooging more for a more updated setup (your computer is the kind of thing I'd only have around as a home file server or some other kind of low-demand application), but looking at your situation, that clearly isn't an option.

I'm going to assume you live in the US, as that's where the usual requests come from.

This is the cheapest card that has DX9, a PCI slot and >256MB of RAM, and is priced at $44. Though not mentioned on the page, it does have Pixel Shader compatibility up to 3.0. Keep in mind that this is most likely a downgrade from a Radeon 9250.

DF General Discussion / Re: What is the best DF CPU?
« on: September 29, 2011, 05:08:51 pm »
What you'll want is most likely either the CPU that can offer the most bang-for-the-buck disregarding cores, or the most performance disregarding the same. Off the top of my head, I'd recommend the i7 2500k overclocked as much as possible, paired with a good set of RAM, but others more in-tune with the details of CPU specs may be able to tell you more.

And what does Toady use?

Toady uses a Lynnfield something-or-other from what I remember. Nothing optimal.

...Why does it seem like this thread is so heavily under the megahertz myth?

The thought that a 3.0 GHz Pentium 4 is any faster than a 2.0 Ghz i5 is laughable.

Agreed.

Well, older isn't necessarily better just because it has a higher frequency.

Recent advances have mostly been in adding cores, the generation of chips from just before multicore took off, had quite similar IPS (per core) but could hit higher clock speeds and could often be pushed quite a bit further with good cooling. Single thread performance hasn't changed much in the last few years, some but not alot.

Your researching skills are a little rusty, aren't they?

Sandy Bridge, for example, offers a 17 percent performance advantage clock-for-clock than a last-generation Lynnfield. Ivy Bridge (link in "Sandy Bridge") will offer a 20 percent increase over Sandy. Going through several generations and taking into account that a GHz is 10^9Hz (each represents a single clock cycle, though I'm a little fuzzy on that), the difference in performance will add up.

Jesus Christ, would you guys mind spoilering the massive list of names?

This is one of those rare times where I wish I could edit other people's posts.

Do we need to send a PM  or something to join?

Please, try to read the OP of a topic before posting something. It's just common sense.

EDIT:
So I am being stupid again, How do I apply to join the project server again???
Totally Blind right now...

FAKE EDIT::: Ah there it is...

It was mentioned both in the whitelisting email and in the OP.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: How do you design your bedrooms?
« on: September 25, 2011, 04:04:22 pm »
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I do my designs either based off of a fractal pattern lightly modified to fit my often gridlike layout, or use a more modified version of the design above with 3x3 rooms centered around multiple shafts. I'd give you a picture, but none of my forts are at a stage advanced enough to do justice to any of my typical configs.

The redstone in the Chickenmaker is jammed. The input wire is now permanently on, and one piston in the counting mechanism refuses to actuate.

There may be more malfunctions, but those are the ones I spotted.

EDIT: As far as I can see, all the damage in Akroma's farm has been fixed. I've also taken the liberty to plant a few more crops there.

Sigh I guess I did something wrong or there is a longer time before I can get accepted for the whitelist...

Sorry, but I've been a bit busy as of late. I'll be checking the emails when I can.

Hi all, I've been thinking of signing up for this, because I've given up trying to get my friends on our server more (at all) and have been wanting to play Minecraft multiplayer more. The one question I have is this. I suck at asthetic building atm.

"Aesthetic". :p

So, would people yell at me for slightly ugly buildings on the open server, or would I get constructive feedback on improving? I'd understand if people would prefer nice-looking stuff on the server, so if that was the case, I'd just wait until I improve my design abilities more before even bothering to sign up...

Decent design ability is only a prereq. if you want to be part of Project, and even then there's ample room for exceptions.

The only requirement for Open is to be able to be a responsible and well-behaved player. If you think you can manage that, then send an email address as per the instructions in the OP (yanno, that post you were supposed to read before posting here).

That said, remember to talk to people and ask what they think of things instead of building willy-nilly. Careful and considerate wins the day.

There wasn't any clues at all.
I mean I went to the .com site and it had contacts which was not even a proper link. Then I double checked a ton of things before I asked... Its prob staring me in the face...

This is from the OP, which, by the way, you probably should have read (it's just common sense).

Email us (@ nowherepublishing.com, PlanehackedWhitelist) to get added to the whitelist. Tell me the best part of Dwarf Fortress in that E-mail. Read the RULES.
CONTACT lordnincompoop, shadowsofwhite and Osmosis Jones to join the Project server! Send them a PM!

I'm having a very difficult time understanding how you could have missed this, since it's literally the seventh line down from the top and in big, bold letters.

Who's the server's best redstone engineer? I demand he build a rotating wall.

Build it yourself. You were probably only saying this light-heartedly, but the builders aren't exactly bound to your bidding. You will be much better received, and you will practice some important skills if you attempt to build it yourself and learn from your experiences. Who knows - if people see you building earnestly, with a real desire to learn and take initiative, maybe they'll help out.

PISTOOOOOOOON ELEVATORS! That are fast AND compact! Finally, the subway will actually be practical now!

When you come back properly, you'll need to start working on this immediately. :p

So, cut it out, and paste it onto the map along with eisenhauge, then trim off all the surrounding blocks and let the generator have some fun?

Pretty much.

I'd also like to request that WorldEdit again become a permanent feature in Planehacked: I think we're all mature enough now to real with it responsibly, and for laying out designs and making designations, nothing else does it quite as well as WorldEdit.

Per LNCP's request, pictures of the non euclidean castle.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

So, folks: What about having this as the new theme for Project?

Djohaal has requested it be moved in through WorldEdit should we pursue it, and I see no reason not to. All it needs is public support.
