Standard thread rules apply. Nothing about sex or adult things.

Let's talk about TV and movies and stuff.

The only shows that are off limits are:
1.)MLP Friendship is magic (because there's sadly a reason it's banned on these forums).

Life Advice / Microsoft Paint Pattern Fill. How to?
« on: October 28, 2014, 04:42:14 pm »
Hi.

I'm currently doing this for a forum game perhaps soon to be here.
http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=145111.0

I know there used to be a way to take a pattern, in Microsoft paint and use the fill with color tool (the little thing that looks like a can of paint pouring out). This basically made it so you could fill an entire area with a pattern in one click. As you can see from the images in that thread, this functionality would be very helpful to me. Anybody remember how to do that?

Thank you for your time.

Creative Projects / Creating a Dwarf Forum game {processes, etc)
« on: October 26, 2014, 11:24:24 am »
I would like to create an RPG Dwarf game on the forums. Doing so presents some process issues and I would like to make this process as easy as possible for myself as DM. THis is sort of a scratchsheet.

(NOTICE: All this is copyrighted so don't even try saying it's yours.)

1.) DM Issues:
A.) Representing Terrain and Areas:
B.) Using Microsoft paint or hand drawing for ease of editing and universal availability.
C.) Indicating Elevation, Items, and perhaps basic artwork/function
D.) Shared through photobucket or easily DM controllable content system.
E.) Easily replicated and reusable tilessets to indicate grass, trees, bushes, snow, stone, etc.
F.) Design of Wilderness areas to have meaningful use.
G.) Ease of posting and preparation.
H.) Not getting bogged down in rules, because rules lawyers aren't fun.
I.) Note keeping (simple enough overall)

2.) Player Issues:
A.) Sense of meaning and reason to post
B.) Sense of ability to intelligently impact game
C.) Sense of seriousness/lack of trollololololing
D.) Posting Flexibility (what happens if you're not there)
E.) Sense of fairness (especially in the absence of a huge rule system).

 3.) Design Feature Issues:
A.) Possible player actions: Choices, even bad ones, can make a game worth it.
B.) NPC interaction with Players. While Players have choices, so do NPCs and those can impact the players. The world does not revolve around them.
C.) Handling player ability to impact the world. Updating maps and notes, having those changes be reacted to appropriately by NPCs and the world at large. Action. Reaction. Counteraction, etc.
D.) Tactical Deployment. Not always possible, but perhaps.
E.) Possibility of creating areas altered by players with forts, farms, businesses, homes etc.
F.) Allies and Enemies for and against the players.

Others as they are thought up.

This thread will be based upon various things I will be working through when designing a game for possible use on these boards. Helpful comments are appreciated.

Life Advice / A quick excel refresher pointer or several, please? Job test
« on: September 14, 2014, 06:34:54 pm »
So somehow, I've gotten a "job test" which seems to be the first step in a job interview for a position tomorrow. It says they're going to test me on excel use and some other things.

I'm pretty sure I know how to do it, but if you'd be so kind, I'd appreciate a refresher or two.

Common Formulas
VLookup (has it changed?)
Referencing one cell in a document in another cell in another document.

I'm going to be spending a decent amount of my time brushing up on this stuff and institutional knowledge I haven't used in a while. I've been in "hands on" positions and this is more of a "behind the scenes/managing" position. I'm just hoping the computer stuff I haven't had time to use in a bit won't be the one fly in the ointment to keep me from getting this thing. Given the nature of the position, I'd have to say I have other problems to deal with, such as possible nepotism, etc. Here's hoping that doesn't stand in my way. Having a regular 40 hour a week job without the insane levels of stress I currently do would go a long way towards giving me a stable life and better health.

I'm really hoping I get this job. Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you for your time.

Exactly what it says on the tin.

Tried googling. Didn't come up with much more than, "press the buttons when it goes to sleep cause it's an energy saving feature."

I'm actually beginning to miss the old corded mice. Is there any way to make this thing more reliable? Can a "sleep" or whatever setting be adjusted (assuming that's even the problem)? Any ideas would be rather appreciated. Thank you very much.

Life Advice / Quitting Alcohol and soda
« on: September 05, 2014, 10:58:21 pm »
So, I'm looking to drastically limit my intake of soda pop. I'm actually rather proud of myself for cutting down on drinking quite a bit, maybe once every month or two on a weekend.

Soda just seems like a readily available thing to me and I'm becoming aware that it is not healthy for me. I would like to cut the amount I drink, perhaps not to zero, but severely reduced. I believe a soda addiction is much healthier than an alcohol addiction. That said, I'd like to look into being as healthy as possible. I have some need to drink a lot of things, but for some reason, just plain old water doesn't seem to do it. I've tried to drink an excessive amount of tea (which again I say is better than booze or soda).

I don't know. I need to be drinking something it seems, and I'm trying to increase the amount of plain old water I drink, but as I said it's hard. I'm replacing one addiction with another. Booze to soda to ???. It's a slow process of getting better, or at least I imagine it being that. Additionally it's got an emotional component as well I imagine. Booze is a form of self medication (for good or for ill). I imagine caffeine and sugar are similar things.

I am far from perfect, but I suppose I'm trying. Has anyone else reduced their intake of alcohol and soda out there? What worked for you?

Thankfully, I am not in any sort of trouble from any of these addictions, but I am, all the same, trying to better myself. Any help is appreciated.

Life Advice / What's going on between me and my doctor?
« on: September 02, 2014, 06:06:36 pm »
So I got really depressed and finally started seeing a doctor for it in Jan or Feb of this year. I'm fine with her being an M.D. and not a psychiatrist or whatever.

I told her right off the bat that I was in an odd situation at the moment financially and didn't have insurance. She agreed to make the visits $75 cash each time for about a 45 minute to 1 hour visit.

She prescribed celexa (cito phram... however you spell it), adjusted the dosage up accordingly over time etc. The whole time, I've been an incredibly appreciative patient, paid up front in full, said thank you excessively, etc. She says she likes talking to me etc. Plus the meds are like $4 a month generic, that's workable.

So far, I feel way better on the medication than I did off it. It's not 100% but I'll take it. She seemed to like the idea of adding a new medication on top of what I was already on called Welbutrin. (however you spell that). Only problem is that stuff is EXPENSIVE, even in the generic form, it's almost $100/month. I can't afford that and I told the pharmacist that straight out.

I informed my doctor that I couldn't afford the new meds and asked if I could just keep on the old meds without the addition. In a perfect world, I would do both, but unfortunately I can't make that happen. For some reason, I keep getting told by her staff that I should see a psychiatrist. The latest phone message from them is that I can keep seeing my doctor and staying on the meds FOR NOW, but that I should make an appointment with "my psychiatrist" as soon as possible....

Is it just me or am I being nudged towards the door?
I don't have a psychiatrist and I can't afford one.
I just want to keep seeing my doctor the way things are. No, it's not perfect, but it's wayyyy better than it was before.

Am I overreacting to this? What the heck is going on here? I don't like the staff telling me "FOR NOW" and that "You need to make an appointment with your psychiatrist as soon as possible." I don't get why they are saying this, knowing I can't afford one. I really don't see how I'm any kind of a problem patient. With one exception (because I couldn't afford the meds) I do everything the doctor tells me and I am very grateful for everybody there helping me.

A.) My doctor knows it's incredibly difficult to get any kind of mental help on a budget and has told me so. She knows county services are overburdened and have a several month long wait list.
B.) My doctor knew of my limited financial means beforehand.

What the heck is this?

Life Advice / Desktop Computer Mouse Button Problems
« on: July 21, 2014, 04:44:10 pm »
My plug in mouse seems to be rather screwed up (as of a day or two ago). This is rather annoying and affects normal usage.

In simple sum:
The left mouse button does not appear to work at all.
The right mouse button appears to either function as the left click usually would and/or as both mouse buttons at the same time.
(Rarely, the buttons won't register at all, or at least not on the first try).

Attempted (and failed) Remedies:
I have tried a system restore to about 4 or 5 days ago. This does not seem to fix the problem.
I have tried to bring up the "mouse" program.
I have tried updating drivers (the system states the driver is up to date).

Additional Details:
Mouse is a Microsoft USB Input Device HID Compliant Mouse.
Driver Version: 6.1.7600.16385
I noticed these issues while playing Starcraft. Negative Performance Results....
I can not perform simple tasks: grabbing and dragging a window from one monitor to another or to a different location on the same monitor.
Right clicking on the desktop now opens the menu normally opened by the left click button.

Questions:
Obviously, how do I get this back to normal?
Is it a hardware problem?
Is it a software or setting problem?

Thank you for your time,
Truean

As always please don't quote me

Background
So, I'm looking for a job. I've got degrees and certificates and licenses and all that crap. My areas are legal, financial and management, primarily.

Somehow, it appears the human resources people have gone nuts and even partially automated so now your resume is scanned by a crazy machine that more than likely shunts it into a black hole if certain keywords aren't there.... This is new and I do not approve.

Seems I have no choice but to use this god aweful thing called linked in that pegs you into certain categories, which is hard for me, because it's hard to explain what I do, and I can't provide many references because it's all privileged. Shit. In addition, it seems it is no longer voluntary, or rather you can chose not to do this crap but then you'll never get past the HR black hole.... I'm a very private person, who doesn't want to do this, but it seems I must. Drat. Double drat even. Meh.

Also it appears saying what you do and a short general description isn't good enough either anymore. [sigh]. Most people and HR haven't a clue what I do.

I'm a lawyer (sadly). I do a ton of criminal defense, juvenile, domestic relations/GAL (bleh, horrible), probate, wills, estates, guardianships, trusts, real estate, business law, private tort suits (suing people over crap like personal injury or stuff). I've got about three years in this plus o god, maybe 5 or 6 as a clerk before that learning ropes.

I manage talent (bands), which is waaay harder than it seems. Herding. Cats.....

I'm kind of a business adviser (ties in with the whole lawyer thing) dealing with various legal, financial, tax, management and policy areas.

I manage apartments.

I've also done tutoring, and that's just the current stuff....

I just do tons of crap, and people don't believe that I'm even a lawyer at first glance if I'm not in a suit, cause I look like I'm 20 or something and even then.... Meh.

Additionally, when applying for jobs, I often get astonished questions like "why don't you wanna be a lawyer?" [major sigh]. These people don't get what it's like to be repeatedly cussed out by people you are helping (avoiding prison etc), occasionally being punched by a client, or thrown up on by a druggy (in the middle of court once or twice, yays....). Plus just dealing with all the crap.... Additionally, I get people who think I'm somehow going to jump ship to a legal position if they would hire me for a non legal one (nopes), or worse yet, that I must be a shitty lawyer who can't hack it if I'm thinking about leaving the profession.... They should try living a day in my life, except I wouldn't be so cruel as to wish that on them.

Questions:

How do I even begin to summarize this stuff to get a job, when it seems that every job you apply for needs its own resume?

How do I know the magic "keywords" the computers are scanning for when they look at your resume (through the computer, they'd never pay somebody to read 'em)?

How do I handle checking back with job postings? Used to be, you'd call or drop by, but now it seems that's discouraged somehow in favor of email, but then they will never contact you back and you'll probably end up in a spam filter.

Ever get the idea that they've just got tons of applications and don't feel like reading any of them?

I know I'm far from the only one in this boat.

Life Advice / Restoring desktop to factory condition?
« on: May 26, 2013, 11:06:22 am »
Have a desktop, have everything backed up, want it restored to factory condition.

A.) I don't see that option specifically. All it seems to be giving me in control panel is "reinstall windows." I am worried about this because the computer did not come with a disk and it asks me to insert one. The computer came preloaded with windows. Is there a separate area for that  on a Dell Desktop usually?

B.) How do I go about restoring a windows 7 desktop to factory condition? (I don't see it under "advanced recovery methods")

C.) I realize that on a windows 7 computer, it's ordinarily pressing F8 during startup. I'm not seeing that for some reason. System recovery has all the usual things:

Startup Repair
System Restore
System Image Recovery
Windows Memory Diagnostic
Command Prompt.

It doesn't appear to give me the option to restore to factory settings on the bottom there?

Thank you for your time.

Life Advice / scvhost eating my CPU cycles. How to stop it?
« on: May 25, 2013, 05:33:51 pm »
My computer seemingly for no reason turned itself off. Desktop, fairly new, etc. Ran safe mode, found virus with malwarebytes, got rid of it (I think).

Looking at Resource Monitor, I can see there is an svchost.exe hogging the CPU cycles up to 100% on task manager. I've suspended it in resource monitor, but it restarts occasionally, to hog my CPU sometimes, not sure why. I get that this is what happened when Microsoft moved from exe files to dll, and that basically this service host file is dealing with those dll files. Problem being, this is killing my computer speed.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I terminate or suspend the process hogging my CPU and things speed right up, amazingly with no ill effects. Problem: this isn't a permanent solution. Is there one?

Can I further isolate and delete whatever is hogging my CPU if that is safe, or is there some other remedy here?

Life Advice / Does white noise hurt you?

Does white noise hurt you?

I couldn't tell you exactly why, but I seem to really like it.
You'd think it'd be boring as hell to listen to the exact same, constant sound but oddly enough it isn't.

I don't even know how loud of a volume my computer headphones are capable of making, but I imagine any sound that's loud enough could mess up your hearing. I dunno.

Currently, two things are eating up space in my voicemail box:

1.) Collect call requests from the jail, several a day.... Filling up my voicemail inbox.
2.) Important voicemails

I need a way to record and save as audio files, voicemails from a droid smartphone. Please, if anybody has any way to do this, let me know. I really need an app or otherwise a method of doing this someway.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Life Advice / Troubleshooting an internet connection
« on: March 15, 2013, 06:43:52 pm »
My desktop has had a wireless connection to my router. I can see the wireless network, connect to the wireless network, but I have no internet access....

Does anyone have any idea how to go about fixing this, please?

Life Advice / Legit links
« on: February 14, 2013, 09:45:25 pm »
The internet has several nice, free programs. Sadly, it has several programs pretending to be these programs; they are virus programs.... :(.

I tried to download speedfan from a fairly legit looking site, except of course.....

Is there any site that basically has a well known listing of legitimate links to well known programs like speedfan (where you manually control you laptop fan's speed)? If not, I'd be tempted to start one, if not for the obvious trap that may create....

Ideas?
