Awesome and immobile immigrant??

I was very surprised to see the best immigrant I have ever seen. Most of them get military drafted anyhow, so immagine my surprize when I see one with all skills already.

She is a novice:

Axe dwarf, wrestler, shield user and armor user.

Even more astounding, she came with her own set of full steel armor with both chain and plate.

She will not move from the edge of the map.

What's wrong? weight?

I have screenshots, how do I post them?

I'm just curious. Is this possible.

No growers/hunters/butchers. Perhaps no cooks or brewers.

Crafters will make things to trade with the caravan. We have enough stone lying around....

The question is if you should include metalsmiths.

Not doing so saves you an anvil at embark, which completely helps with the initial foodstuffs/booze...stuffs....boozestuffs...? Whatever.

However, that also nets you fewer high value trade goods early on. Even lower value metalcrafts sell for more than stone, but require fewer materal inputs (stone, skill and time).

I suppose it's a question of return on investment meeting tradeoffs.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to best do this?

DF Modding / How do I mod in rabbits?

Frankly I'm sick of Mules and would like to replace them with rabbits for all the following reasons:

a.) Mules can't breed, Rabbits breed like well.... rabbits.
b.) Rabbits are an underground animal; they seem more Dwarven.
c.) You would think Rabbits would be a space efficient meat source
(though I understand that's not possible in game).

How do I edit the Raws to create/replace this animal?

There is also a meat production problem. You get a lot of meat from rabbits. Individual rabbits aren't big but you get a LOT of them. I imagine breeding rates are hard coded? Therefore, I'd make due with getting a lot of meat from one Rabbit to simulate the huge reproduction cycles that would flood rabbits and thus rabbit meat.

DF Gameplay Questions / Safely breaching underground rivers.

I have no problem with water from underground rivers. I seem to have a problem with the natives. The feeling is mutual. I cannot get the cave fish or cave lobsters from this thing. I want to.

I have not trained an army. I have however, trained a legendary weaponsmith/mechanic.... My fortress is protected by a perimeter of weapon traps--each of which is loaded with 3 maces, 3 warhammers, 3 battleaxes, and 1 spear. I have no defense problems concerning the outdoors. I watch goblin chunks fly as a hobby....

The issue seems to be the UG river, which has opened up a second front in my lines. Worse it is an interior threat behind and below my lines. I have also learned the hard way the snakemen paralyze.... Ctr-Alt-Del....

That said, what is a safe means to breach the underground river now that I know of its location? (savescumming)? Please keep in mind I would like to fish from this area, that seems to be the main problem and reason why I don't just line the place with my usual weapon traps.

That's it.... Guess how many cheesemakers have immigrated to my place.... Answer, way too many. Currently that number is 12. 12! That is not counting the milkers. Currently we can't milk anything but purring maggots and I can't find those things anywhere. I have 20 pens full of roped cows; I'm pretty sure I have one and two humped camels running around someplace too.

Thus, I'm modding in reactions to make milk: dwarven milk, cow milk, 1 and 2 humped camel milk....

So currently I have this:

It seems to work except I cant get my dwarves to put it into barrels. Is there a way to make it come in a container or get them to do that? Is this a problem with liquid items made in reactions?

Also, what would be a proper reagent to balance this? Is that needed? If you think about it, you milk cows every morning, so it's not that unbalancing to have it as is with how time flows in game. However, the potential for abuse is there as a mod.

Ideas, questions, comments, rants, objects thrown in my general direction?

Alright, I have "Ingala" in a bit of a crisis.

She's a proficient Armorer/Weaponsmith and Legendary Miner with a small amount of social skills.

She was asleep and got a strange mood. I have four metalsmith's forges and four craftsdwarves workshops. I even added a boywer's workshop in case that was is. She is not interested.

Instead of claiming a shop, She just sits around her room all day.

I have never seen this behavior before unless a dwarf is looking for a workshop, but I don't see how she could be. I have the workshops she is likely to want.

Any ideas?

So here's the basics:

Meet Urist McNaughty. He's a habitual troublemaker that most if not all of my fort likes. He's a lovable little scamp I guess. Anyhow, McNaughty has a criminal record that is very long; he has been repeatedly imprisoned and let out. My idea was to permanently encumber, rather than kill him to avoid a tantrum spiral and not send his wife over the edge: (He has caused HUGE AMOUNTS of damage)

If you build a chain into a room as furniture, then chain something/someone to it, you have a justice system prison (designated of course).

Now, once that Dwarf is chained up, can you unbuild the chain, which will then result in that dwarf getting chained to another chain with the chain he WAS chained to being in his inventory weighing him down ... rinse and repeat?

The idea is to weight encumber the wrongdoer... here Urist McNaughty so that it slows down his crime spree.

Ideas? Questions? Comments? Random posts? etc?

Playing DF d13 prototype....

How outdoor farming failure led to the insanity of a clothier mom.

Well, I thought I had everything set up wonderfully. I made sure the bedrooms were far enough away from the workshops in the same building to prevent noise, etc etc. Everything just got really depressing....

First off I tried to farm above ground in a mountainous area by using screw pumps to muddy the ground in nice neat little areas. Now It says I have no seeds for this area? I have rat weed, strawberry, prickleberry, longland grass, ... and most importantly ROPE REED seeds. Why does it not allow me to plant and say I have no seeds for this muddy area? I did not trade for cloth because I thought I could grow my own in case of moods.

Speaking of moods a family arrived with the immigration wave bringing me from 7 dwarves to 30.... They were dad, a peasant, mom a clothier and two kids (daughters). This family seems to attract strange moods like nuts. Dad went into a strange mood as a peasant and came out of it a bone carver. That's cool enough I guess. Mom on the other hand....

With no cloth in sight, mom, a clothier goes into a strange mood. I have no cloth and can get no cloth for her. Insanity is coming aaand... her it is.
She's now stark raving mad and in a depressing, ironic way the Clothier is tearing off all her clothes and running around naked.

I'm pretty sure mom's gonna die :(. Is there anything I can do about this to keep her alive somehow? My legendary bone carver (her husband) and her two kids (proficient growers actually) might understandably take her death badly. I've given them all great bedrooms/ offices. How can I lessen the impact of her death on them (preparing tomb)?

She just keeps hanging around her and her husband's room naked.... :(

DF Suggestions / Naming Pets

(Note: did search "Name* pets," "naming pets," "pet names." No results)

I'd like to name my pets...please. It seems more personal that way. Currently pets are nearly a bother cause they're livestock you can't butcher (minus tantrum) who eat only your fps. But if you could have a dog named sparky or a ... I dunno tame dragon ... named ... Smokey? Flugulsnoots? (we're going with Smokey) or something, it would be less like a restriction.

Certainly Toady and Scamps can understand...?

This seems minor. Is it?

DF Modding / Modding Raws to make crystal glass reactions possible.

Hi, I usually don't mod but I am so sick of trying to get crystal glass that I am willing to (and genning the new world).

I would like to know the reaction mod in the raws to make rock crystals from nothing or to make raw crystal glass from nothing.

I've run over 20 forts and I've never seek rock crystal. I haven't been able to trade for it either.

Any help you could give me would be welcome, thank you very much :).

So there I was starting a new fort. Things are going alright and my masons are working like mad along with everyone else. I make it through winter and to spring.

The elves show up. I figure the little pointy ears will have their usual compliments of cloth and ... pointed... earlike things.... I guess.

Much to my surprise, they actually showed up with a giant eagle in a cage, tame... Naturally, after I managed to get my heart pumping something besides astonishment, I gave them every worthless stonecraft I had for it.

I have two questions:

1.) I'm new, how do I post the picture (printscreen) of this thing. I have it both in cage and in trade depot menu.



2.) What do I do with it? Right now I built the cage right outside my entrance.  How can I tell if it's a boy or a girl and more importantly, how can I get the opposite sex to start breeding these things into impromptu flying guards and meat sources?
