My turtle-bone floodgate and I will just be over here, holding back the hordes of invaders while you figure out how to sharpen that thing.

Heh, I remember trying to explain the significance of saints to my Muslim father... that was a fun day.

Hmmm, this gives me an idea for a fort in the new version: different burrows for different jobs, each one with a temple dedicated to the patron saint of that job, set up around a central pillar to Mary. Catholic dwarfs? Why not! And then the artifact makers would live in an altogether separate burrow, dedicated to one of the saints of craftsmen. I'm thinking Joseph.

"An ambush! Curse them!"

Right next to my mayor, who was out cutting wood when she discovered them. This is the fortress where I let the chips lie as they fall, so I say a quick goodbye to Shorast Freshlens and (A)ctivate her. I am sure she will die an honorable death in battle against the green ones.

Five seconds later, she becomes Shorast Freshlens the Glacial Coil. Armok bless the woodcutters.

Edit: She did injure her leg, but it healed even as she went to rest. I am slightly in awe of this dwarf now, and will not underestimate her again.

Holy cow!

I just hope it comes out after my temp-work is over; this thing is going to eat every iota of free time in my day.

So, so psyched for thoughts, appearances (yeah, statues!), and MAGMA EVERYWHERE OH ARMOK

I tend to separate my building styles out by Z-level. It doesn't always work out that way, but the fort I like very much and spend most of my time on has this layout:

-Farms on the first underground layer, laid out in a very organic manner. Also, clothiers and the corresponding stockpiles.
-Same deal on the next one down, except less of a warren (far fewer random passageways connecting everything, much more dependent on large hallways)
-Two very Roman levels of bedrooms. Straight lines and symmetry everywhere! Rooms are uniform, save for the starting seven, which are larger and engraved.
-The fun levels, wherein I dug artful catacombs, winding passageways, and multi-layer beehives out of the rock. Any ore discovered here is dug out in its entirety and the resulting passageway is turned into something.
-At the very bottom, some very convoluted noble bedrooms. They look like spaceships, only full of +diorite crown+s.

When a dwarf hits legendary, I take off all his cleaning/hauling labors...except burial.

I like to build little cafes all over the place as well. Decentralized dining just works.

My military is usually completely cut off from the rest of the fort... either aboveground or tucked away in a catacomb somewhere. I don't like them mingling. >:(

I still have mine set to twelve, and it's WAY too long. How did you go about changing it? Children are taking over my current fort and that ain't cool.

The fort I posted about is at year 12 now, with population ~275. 101 of those dwarves are children. Damn you prosperity!

On my very first attempt, I embarked, hit pause, and... stared. I hit a few buttons, stared some more, and quietly abandoned.

My first real fort had several major design issues (what do you mean you shouldn't build workshops next to bedrooms?) and no army. I had NO idea what to do with the goblins caught in my cages, and an irrational fear of animal stockpiles. They rotted where they were caught.

There was also that little issue with barrels. Let's not talk about it.

Z-screens. I'm curious, see.

Let's make a bit of a game out of this, folks.

1: Screenshot the z-screen of your best fortress. 'Best' meaning whatever fort you're most proud of.

2: Show me the feature of that fortress you like best/are most proud of/is too darn cool to not show. This could be anything, from a hammerdwarf with two mangled lungs who still takes on goblin sieges (and triumphs!) to an ingenious goblin trap, to a gigantic tower that stretches across most of the territory, to the aftermath of a slaughter that left a truly grisly amount of blood, bodies, and vomit strewn before your entryway. Anything that makes it unique, I want to see.

I'm something a DF newbie, but here is mine:

I tend to use dorf as a verb. A noun too, but verbs are just more fun.

"I'm going to do dorf now, see you later."

"Oh man, that gobbo just got dorfed. Lookit the gore fly..."

"Get out of bed and go dorf that wall, Urist McLazy."

Or just the sound of a fortress running along at a steady pace. Dorfdorfdorf, like stumpy little cogs in my glorious machine.

DF General Discussion / Re: What music do you think fits DF?
« on: August 26, 2009, 02:58:50 am »
I tend to listen to a lot of Primus when my fort is just running along at a steady pace. The banjos seem right somehow.

For battles, I like Blind Guardian. For BIG battles, the LotR music is dragged out.

Tantrum spirals... hm. I could go for some Touchers, then.

And if it's getting boring, and Fun is a long time coming, well... MC Frontalot or the like occupies my ears far better than most.

In a fortress with no justice (but an idle hammerer/noble class), my mayor had a years-old charge against him for not fulfilling a mandate. This was never an issue until today.

For some reason, he was abruptly stripped of his title, jailed, and hammered to death. Him and no one else. He is survived by his wife, nine children, and a fortressful of friends.

His only grudge? The duke's second-born.

All I'm saying is that it doesn't look good. Not good at all.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Generalized archery failure (GAF)

They aren't holding clothing. There's only five of them, I checked.

But! I did discover that they were still assigned shields from their axedwarf days, so I took those off. For once, they cooperated and actually dropped them. Next, I put each one into a separate squad to see if that helped. So far, no change.

I made some wooden bolts and a few more bone ones, despite the current stockpile being full to bursting with unused ammo. No change.

Thank you for all your suggestions; does anyone have another idea? I am at a loss.

ETA: OH WAIT they decided to all go to sleep. Now two are practicing... right in time for the goblins to show up :'D

....goodbye, elven diplomat.

Range:

I'm autoforbiding ammo, but also making plenty of fresh new bolts.

Have to run for now, but will try separate squads when I am back. Thanks for the suggestions!
