DF General Discussion / Re: Dwarf Fortress Talk #3: Your Questions!
« on: September 06, 2009, 06:30:37 am »
I casually watch what's going on in the forums, and I think I noticed this one in the thread for Talk #2, but it deserves repeating...

Do you have any plans for implementing some of the items proposed in Eternal Suggestions? In particular, I'm interested in both improved hauling and septic systems.

Septic systems I'm especially interested to see. The greatest civilization of the ancient world (Rome, after all) was distinguished almost exclusively by its amazing plumbing and septic engineering.

DF Suggestions / Re: Realistic Mining Suggestion

I would be particularly interested to see the mining suggestions in this thread coupled with the hauling improvements suggestion in other threads, plus the additional mechanical improvements suggested in the mechanical improvement thread. I can imagine that setting up a steam-powered drill, mechanized ventilation, and slag-conveyor system would be the bee's knees.

Further on the subject of mechanization and mining, perhaps the implementation of machinery to do some of the job of pulverizing waste stone or ore stone into gravel suitable for use in roads or smelting would be good?

I'd say that legendary miners would be faster than novices at their jobs and get tired more slowly, and there would be a quarry/excavate differentiation, whereby a legendary miner is more likely to create a solid block than a pile of rubble. Also, for the purposes of gem-cutting, I would imagine it would be better to have an intermediate-sized block, that would then be worked into a gem as usual, but rubble would yield no rock.

Also, it seems to me that even now, the benefits of living above-ground are apparent. Perhaps a corollary change would be to make it less horrible to live above-ground than it is now?
