Why, thanks for posting this here! :) Are you planning on playing, too?

If I get time in between fixing bugs in Junethack, yes, I'll try some trophies :-)

Hi, there. It's a pleasure for me to announce the 3.6.1 release of UnNetHack.

Source code, Debian package and Windows TTY and GUI executables can be
downloaded here:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/unnethack/files/unnethack/3.6.1/

The Windows version has now a Console and GUI executable included and
HTML dumps enabled.

The most prominent gameplay improvement is probably the removal of utter
destruction effect of a bag of holding explosion (originally from
SporkHack). Instead of destroying the complete content of the bag of
holding its content gets scattered around. Of course there's still the
possibility that something breaks when it hits the floor.  ;)

This release is save and bones compatible with 3.6.0.

Screenshots of the the Linux terminal and Windows GUI versions:

http://unnethack.files.wordpress.com/2012/02/unnethack_win32_3-6-1.png

The complete changelog can be read on the development blog:

Bye
Patric

I'm not sure if you saw this already, so I'll drop a pointer to Junethack's announcement on this board:
Announcing NetHack Summer tournament 2011

It's a cross-variant NetHack Tournament that started this weekend.

You can play Vanilla NetHack, SporkHack, UnNethack, AceHack and NetHack 1.3d, the first version of the game called NetHack, released 1987.

Bye

The results of the NetHack Poll 2009 are online.

They are downloadable in text form from here:
http://nethack-de.sourceforge.net/nethack_poll_results.txt

There's also a thread on rec.game.roguelike.nethack where I
commented on some parts of the results:

Thank you for participating in the poll!

So Patric Mueller, if you're in any way related to the making of Nethack, I'd personally like to shake your internet-hand. I had no idea there were still people developing and modifying it, and while I haven't tried any non-vanilla version, I have played the hell out of vanilla.

I of course didn't have anything to do with the development of the original version but I've been trying for almost a year now to do a decent variant;)

Ascended 3 times you know, and died with a samurai on the astral plane when I choked to death on a Titan. Fun times.

Yeah, you need to get NetHack's humor to find that funny.   ;D

Just a small ping.

6 days left before the poll closes.

I need a break from Nethack.

There's always Slash'Em, UnNetHack, SporkHack  (and Crawl, if you want a real break from NetHack).  ;D

Good job on the hidden challenge AlStar, but I wouldn't advise taking on the ZAPM challenge. Maybe you should download it and give it a try first before deciding.

If you can compile it's a little bit better to take the code that /dev/null itself is using.

I've also made an object spoiler page. Price-IDing is so much simpler in ZAPM than in NetHack.  ;D

ZAPM in itself is not really hard, a win takes around 1 hour but getting to know it certainly takes some time. But not so much time that you couldn't beat it till the end of the tournament.

Interesting.

But I must know.
What is _your_ motivation?
None of this wishy-washy "we" or "I feel"

Okay, no wishy-washy then. ;D

I want to know who plays NetHack, who played NetHack and why they left. Are there only old people playing NetHack because it was fun when they were hip? Want people something new or consider they vanilla NetHack sacrosanct and anybody who's doing patches or a variant is just wasting their time? Are the players spoiler-ridden because they feel they wouldn't win otherwise and do they like it?

I know we won't get definitive answers on those questions, but even a small sample helps.

Who are you, now?

Download links, E-mail requests, and personal questions, oh my.
As stated in the first post, I'm Patric Mueller. You can google me or my nick bhaak without a problem.

My profile has a link to my homepage and two links in the post go to the two NetHack-related projects of mine on SourceForge. I'm not a member of the original DevTeam of NetHack, in case that's what got you puzzled.

I think all of that would be a little bit much work for a scam just to get gender, age and country of NetHack players.  :D

The other information isn't really that personal and you don't need to enter a e-mail addresse. The pointer to the results will be posted everywhere where I also posted the poll itself.

Forgive me if I am wrong, but this looks suspicious.
In what way suspicious?

Hi there!

After the big success of the Crawl poll in August (the results can be downloaded from http://crawl.akrasiac.org/poll_results.txt) and in loose cooperation with the Crawl developers responsible for that poll, we present you the "NetHack Poll 2009".

The intention of this poll is to gather some information about NetHack players, both currently active and past players for helping us variants developers for design decisions and to get a small insight into the NetHack community as a whole.

Even if you no longer play NetHack regularly, please take part in this poll. Most questions make sense also for former players and one question asks explicitly why you no longer play NetHack.

This poll will run through the month of November. Afterwards the results will be released to the public and a pointer will be posted here.

Please spread the word about this poll to other NetHack playing people you know.

You can either directly reply to this as mail and send it to
nethackpoll@gmail.com

Or post it in here.

Or fill out the online form on
http://nethack-de.sf.net/poll.html

Many thanks,
Patric Mueller (lead developer of NetHack-De and UnNetHack)

Note: Your e-mail address will not be shared with any third parties.
After the poll is closed and the final results have been published all replies will be deleted.
