Curses / Re: Things to fix or do in the next release

Here's how I'd put science in C-L terms. Basically, conservative science means absolute "truths" while liberal science hails having the right to express new views, so long as it helps with solar power or solving world hunger. The Elite Liberal setting is that all knowledge is freely shared between people (like a broader Wikipedia) and everyone can expand on this common foundation. While Arch Conservatives would prefer a system where some douchebag just tells people why stuff happens.

C+: Science is a popularity contest.
C: The scientific community sells their opinions to the highest bidder.
M: Scientists are expected to qualify by certain ethical standards.
L: Neutrality and altruism are the cornerstones of scientific advancement.
L+: Science is open source.

While it is an interesting idea, I don't really think Liberals really want an 'open source' science. Such a science would promote global warming denialism and Intelligent Design, both hallmarks of the CCS. As well as more bizarre ideas such as the "Mutations are Good For You" nonsense seen in comic books.

I am used to the current system where all scientists are evil and immoral for supporting nuclear power and animal testing, even though it was scientists that support secularism and prove that pollution is bad for people.

But Wikipedia is comparable to open source and it is (accusedly) liberally biased. On the other hand, Conservapedia is similar too...

Maybe liberal science would still be open, but funded by government and non-profit organizations only, and instead of researching machines that pollute more to provide junk for the people, they create powerful wind turbines and increase harvest sizes for the poor (without GM naturally!).

There is only one logical answer.

The Liberal in question is actually none other than Jesus Christ (probably recruited as a hippie), the one who takes away all our sins... but doesn't evidently get rid of them himself.

You make it sound like EVERY Bay 12 game contains gratuitous amounts of death, Diablous. I can't imagine why...

Yeah, that's crazy. After all, DF... er, never mind. But WW1 Medi-Uh, disregard that. I mean, technicly you can win LCS without any violence or death. Sort of.

Actually I've managed to do non-violent revolution in prctice (sorry I couldn't resist). It's not even that hard, guitar squads are the most popular way but it's also possible to win just by having one liberal spray graffiti (unbelievable but true) or having your founder recruit writers for the Liberal guardian until his recruitment cap (in nightmare mode this is a bit harder, thanks to the fire squads).

I guess what really needs to happen, then, is for police units to be persistent, rather than abstracted like all other encounters

Indeed. It's a major flaw in the current raid system (in my opinion) that basically a half-decent persuader can go to the park, wander around (for hours IRL, no time at all in LCS) until (s)he has managed to get all the important conservatives to listen to him/her. This has, if I've understood correctly, been changed somewhat (only one CEO now), but in my opinion it would be even better if all the security personnel and important figures would be actually present on the site rather than being just a random occurrence. Upon the alarm, most of the security guards would obviously head for the last known location of the Liberals, while some would escort the Arch Conservatives out. If the Liberals manage to bag an Arch Conservative, (s)he'll be replaced in a month or two.

I just randomly downloaded LCS the other day and extreme awesomeness resulted  :)

Good work!

Nice! I stumbled upon ADOM by downloading from a page that had a long list of games (only names, no descriptions). "Games with abbreviated names are often the best" proved itself right again!

Glad you've enjoyed the LGWI topic, Chief. To address your Mac bit: Though I've never tried to play Liberal Crime Squad on a Mac, I checked the idea out on the LCSWiki. It says you can use... "wineconsole & curses backend." I'm not sure how to get that all to work, though; you're gonna need to hail down someone with more experience.

http://davidbaumgold.com/tutorials/wine-mac/ here's a tutorial for installing Wine on Mac. Haven't tried myself (I'm a Liberal Linux user). You could also try compiling it from source. If you're really desperate for the game, you'll do with I did when I didn't get DosBox to work with a program - download VirtualBox, get boot discs for some OS with binaries available... trains your computer skills too!

I recently stumbled upon this hacker Roguelike called Decker. I love the way it handles stealthy actions and combat, and perhaps that could be utilized in LCS as well. That would require a lot of tweaking, however. In short, the Decker system goes as follows:

  • The mission area is divided into rooms called 'nodes', nothing too different from the LCS
  • There are several classes of security guards, some patrol the area while some lay at rest until an alarm is sounded
  • If a patrolling guard sees the player, a query must be responded (failure to respond or a bad response will result in a alarm level being raised and another query)
  • Yellow alert only makes patrolling guards more vigilant and careful, while red alert results in the "sleeping" guards being activated and starting to scurry around the area where the player was last spotted (in LCS, this could also mean the Arch Conservatives fleeing the site for safety)
  • If there is are hostile guards in the same room, all of them become hostile. Guards aren't automatically hostile though, even during red alert - they may query the player upon seeing them though, resulting in violence if one can't deceive them
  • Guards are set upon starting the raid - no random battles like Final Fantasy
  • It's possible to flee guards, but they will at least try to follow. In Decker, there's a smoke program that allows one to shake them, in LCS some smoke bombs could do the trick!
While I find the Decker system over 9000 times more interesting than the current raid/combat system, I am very aware that this would be a huge change to everything in the game. And it would need some refinement to actually fit into LCS. And LCS currently has a raid system inspired by dungeon history, so I understand if there's reluctance to change it. And, maybe we don't need two games with similar systems. But I'd like to see LCS raids become somewhat more tactical and interesting.

Bu... buh... BUT WHY DO WE EVEN HAVE SPECIFIC ISSUES IF WE CAN'T TARGET THEM!!? IT MAKES NO SENSE! AAAAAAAAAAAHH!!!

The general population also vote for politicans based on a random issue. The people choose a random issue to care about, and then vote for the politican they feel match that issue (so a person wanting L gay marriage will vote for a L politican).

As far as I know (I'm at work so I don't have time for source diving, as much as I'd like to) congressmen can be elected based on a single issue, but senator votes are based on multiple issues. A congressman can get enough votes by simply bashing animal testing but a senator has to appeal to a wider range of opinions.

Sleeper's recruiting action is considered to be quite lousy (except when you do it with agents...) as you will (almost?) always get those less-than-attractive sleeper types - janitors, office workers, lab techs...

(during my martial artist solo run I lost 500 wisdom during a single raid).

WOW, he lost 500 wisdom!  A true liberal indeed! ;)

Yeah. He also lost potato intelligence which causes him to replace Rolls-Royce with other necrophilia. Boastingly enough, I happen to have the same banana peel.

Indeed, who the Conservatives target in your squad is ruled by the RNG. However, if you only bring one Liberal to a site, the chance of that Liberal being targeted is 100%.

How do you convert said liberal back then?

Hrm. See my sig and tell me that it's easy to get stunlocked with just one liberal... however, to be precise, if you run with just one liberal, (s)he probably has a lot of juice if (s)he takes risks that may lead to being stuck with Speaker Conservatives. In which case wisdom gains won't occur, but juice crippling may be hellish too (during my martial artist solo run I lost 500 wisdom during a single raid).

And yeah, I've been thinking about the WIS/HRT conversion pingpong trick. Nice to have confirmation that it actually works.

As far as I know, wisdom can't be erased. Luckily, it has no real effect until it's near your Heart, so gaining heart through juice negates wisdom increases to some extent. Wisdom gains are also quite easy to avoid mostly.

Well, having beaten the game several times, I find the raid system boring. Basically, you go in, grab some stuff, shoot conservatives and get out. The successfulness is neatly determined by the player's risktaking and the RNG. More tactical opportunities would be nice, forcing the player to think and renew their approach, as just repeatedly pushing the fight key wouldn't always do the trick any longer. In any case I'd like to see a version of LCS where having different squads would really be useful: in the current version one can easily beat the game with just a single squad of guitars, stealthy bastards or AK47s.

And on to the coding! Implementing such a system would be a big change for the gameplay and the code, but many features are already in place: raids (obviously) and simultaneous raids (or rather multiple ones during the same day) for example. The game currently also has the ability to track the actions done on site, so I don't think it will be too hard to implement a system that allows one raid to influence another.
