DF General Discussion / Re: The mysterious suffocating door
« on: October 26, 2009, 01:30:13 am »
Door cancels breathe:  Too injured.
I can see this being an amazing new glitch after the healthcare rewrites go in.

Urist McDoctor: This door... IT'S NOT BREATHING!
Urist McSurgeon: By Armok! We'll have to operate immediately!
[sounds of magma-powered surgical chainsaw cutting through door's epidermis]
Urist McDoctor: I fear we were too late, this door has no pulse. Send for a coffin.
Urist McChampion has bled out due to a lack of available medical personnel.

Curses / Re: Closed Down.

I ended up using some (6) home-grown commandos to clean out the CCS and never looked back after I experienced the rapture of the M16 rifle. My dirty little trick for relatively safe training is to bunker up a safehouse with cameras and traps and then deliberately provoke repeated sieges on that location by stealing sensitive documents (the sale of which easily pays for the aforementioned base improvements). SWAT teams/agents/corporate mercs will quite happily jump into your traps, disabling most of their personnel and thereby turning the siege into a training-friendly shooting gallery for your men while also providing you with an abundant source of armor and ammo in the process. I managed to use that team to take out the CCS with fairly little risk, losing only 38 teeth and a tongue. Your only real threat during a raid on a CCS safe house should be the SWAT officers and I found that they rarely travel in groups large enough to pose a meaningful risk to my squad.

Has the livestream broadcasting started yet? I can't seem to get the streaming to work properly because the client apparently "could not find frequency".

Curses / Re: LCS 4.00.5a Download - Now With 100% More Classic Mode

This has probably already been documented, but it seems that recruited animals are functionally identical to humans except that they start play with no skills whatsoever, are automatically charged with treason (BAD DOG!) and aren't permitted to make seduction attempts (even to other animals). This has lead me to create a "Canine Liberation Front" squad consisting entirely of heavily armed dogs in funny outfits with Molotovs who just run around blowing things up and discussing animal cruelty with random passerby.

I would like to ask that this not be fixed in future versions, except possibly to make it permissible for animal characters to be naked in public with no ill effects.

EDIT: I've also noticed that women's rights laws are being reset to arch-conservative status (from liberal or elite liberal) every time the Supreme Court hands down decisions. I have a copy of the save file on hand if it is needed.

Ran into a bit of hilarity while playing today. One of my graffiti artists was confronted by a lone officer and I had him shout slogans at the officer to make my getaway easier as the officer became crippled by self-doubt. I then began to wonder what would happen if I continued to shout slogans and by doing so managed to make the officer a true liberal.  Unfortunately, this cleared up the officer's self-doubt problems entirely and he immediately thanked his savior by blasting the man's head apart with a shotgun. Something gives me the impression that this is not something that is actually supposed to happen and I thought Mr.Fox might want to know about it.

It also seems that my artists have been painting murals of the " ." topic with no apparent adverse side effects.

My apologies if that has already been mentioned but I am running 4.00.5a on a mac using Parallels and/or Bootcamp and none of my characters seem to be capable of gaining juice. After robbing my fellow apartment-dwellers blind and recruiting a few musicians I had not gained a single point of juice. While I understand that such a challenge may appeal to veteran players, I would very much like like to have a Liberal Crime Squad instead of a seven-man Liberal Crime Club.

EDIT:
Apparently the out of date wiki was just backstabbing me again. Thanks for the help.

Slaves to Armok: God of Blood / Mac Version?
« on: October 12, 2009, 03:16:29 pm »
As a relatively new DF player I am interested in plating it's poor, broken predecessor but ran into a bit of a snag. It seems that the Toady One did not see fit to make his game Mac-friendly and I was wondering if anyone knew were and if such a version may be found. I thank you for your assistance in this matter.

I like the idea of "digging too deep" and unleashing something truly evil that will almost certainly wipe out your fortress, but I do not think they should have an infinite spawn. Or, perhaps, they will spawn infinitely until a certain mega HFS (think a balrog-like thing or a badass demon) is destroyed. Perhaps you will have to descend into the pit to fight this creature, along with its progeny and that will stop the attacks. This could be done in adventure, fortress, or reclaim mode.

It would be exceptionally difficult to hack through an HFS onslaught to get to this megabeast, but if there is one thing the DF community likes, its a challenge, right?

I personally like that idea and there is a certain level of precedent for such actions it in the Threetoe story Summoned to Darkness, although that was an arguably unsuccessful attempt to do so. Even though alot of the Threetoe stuff is v1+ material, this idea just might be practical for near-future implementation since it's really just the old HFS made bigger and handed quasi-entity status. I would be quite happy to give my adventurer something better to do than kill all the surviving megabeasts in the world with a single nickel and this just might be it. My only worry is that such a good story mechanic may well be rendered dull by overuse and outright laughable by player stupidity belligerent genius, the inevitable dwarf carnage is just a happy side effect.

...is there an age limit to becoming king?

Your beard must be this long to rule the Bakers of Tragedy.

Will it be possible to define blood as a body-pervasive tissue for the purposes of toxins and disease without creating targeting weirdness in combat? I understand that the current system can get at damage to blood cells and vessels in a roundabout fashion, but it would be pretty cool to have cyanide-style toxins that render the blood unable to carry oxygen (maim the blood?) without just directly killing the lungs.
