yeah I was aware the falling object gets destroyed but what concerns me is what it hits. If it hits a 'floor' with no wall below it it will keep going through. I wasn't sure if a constructed wall acted like this or as a stop for the collapse. my tests seem to show collapse so hopefully my vault will be protected from cave ins.


This vault should be interesting. I feel like it's going to be more work for me to construct than anything but we'll see. The location I chose for this has 3+ z-levels of aquifer so I have my hands full getting everything I need constructed around it properly.

Sorry for the double post but as a vault related question... if a constructed wall collapses onto a constructed wall will it cause it to be destroyed? What if a natural wall collapses onto a constructed wall? What about 10 z-levels of contructed walls?

I just want to make sure I don't allow for someone to circumvent all of my clever vault challenges.

Cool, I may just end up using constructed walls anyways I'm running some tests on cave ins now. I would hate for you to get by everything by staging a collapse.

But either way I got some pretty good ideas coming up that involve the death of many many dwarves (both in construction and in cracking).

Well you can't mind out the bottom of the bottom most layer anyways. So what I'd do is drain and lower the pipe to the bottom most z-level and cap it there.

anyway, any idea why none of my fortress guards or squads train? only 1 guy did, and now he doesnt.

Just the typical, check them for nervous injuries, check to make sure their hands aren't full of useless junk, and check to make sure you have an area designated as a barracks.

My guess of how to do it would be this:

1. Carve your your fortress below ground.
2. Obsidian cast every open air z-level.
3. Mine out every z-level below the soil (except your fortress).

If you do this you HAVE to do neat up-side down things even if they make no sense. So have an upsidedown bridge where the 'entrance gate' is a z-level below the bridge, put fortifications on the 'top' of upsidedown towers, and what not.

Well you'd need to use obsidian casting wouldn't you? Otherwise the 'stone' layers would just be constructed walls wouldn't they?

Also can support transfer from top down or will the whole fort just cave in.

Why not try to make some sort of setup where you can divide off the orcs and let him fight vs smaller numbers at a time to increase his use of weapons?

It's fitting that Morul isn't a legendary liar yet. Anything he'd lie about he's probably actually done. "One time I took out 5 squads of orcs! Oh wait I actually did do that hmmm..."

Just use 2x1 for the interior of the tower and have the monster in one spot (well free to wander after the cages are opened) and a support in the 2nd spot.

I think the hardest part of the tower might be getting the creatures. Since invasion is off you can't use goblins and skeletal creatures have building destroyer. So you're going to need to gather up a lot of non-animal creatures I think.

If I'm not mistaken if you use animal creatures you could set your civilians to have hunting enabled and they'd approach without being scared?

I would guess (just a guess) that windows could be built at the top z-level since they're an item like a bed more so than a construction like a wall.

Otherwise Raising bridges or statues would probably be your best bet.

I like the idea of building an entrance, building a waterfall over the entrance, then building a retractable bridge and some aqueducts to divert the waterfall when you want to go in or out.

You'd need a lot of terrain relief, though.

I've tried that before (with magma no less). It's doable, the dwarves will try to path through it (and often times attempt going through) even while it's running. So unless you have an automatic shut-off they'll still try to go through. Of course if the waterfall flows into some grates that probably won't really be a problem. An automatic shut off also seems to have trouble with wagons and caravans (they didn't seem to trigger my civilian pressure plates) and invaders will still trip them so your waterfall will let everyone in.

I have a question about the Impenetrable Vault challenge. Would you be willing to allow for smoothed walls to be considered 'off limits' for deconstruction/digging. Having to encase a vault in constructed walls to prevent a 'dig in' would be unnecessarily time consuming.
