DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Can someone explain the noble hate to me?
« on: February 23, 2010, 12:57:46 pm »
I don't really have a problem with the hammerer going after some random peon. The thing is, half the time he goes after a dwarf who has an absolutely pivotal role in the fort (like a Legendary brewer, for instance.)

Even if he/she hammers some random dwarf, the results can be almost as disastrous, depending on how many friends the victim had. It's not unheard of for dwarves to have as many as 30 friends, plus family members. If the hammerer hammers someone who has 30+ friends, chances are that someone's going to be pushed over the edge and possibly set off a tantrum-hammering spiral.

Try a buritto. Several of my drinking friends have said that refried beans and thick tortillas can "absorb" alcohol and make you sober fast, with little or no hangover.

I don't drink, so I can't say anything about it, but it's worth a try if you've got a can of refried beans laying around your kitchen (and honestly, who doesn't?)

Look at his recent posts, you can see his grammar and spelling get worse and worse.

He doesn't think that you're in a drunken rage, Jack... he is drunk himself.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Eccentric player behaviors
« on: February 23, 2010, 01:09:31 am »
I feel that this thread should stay alive.

I'm finding that I abuse traffic orders to make the dwarves behave how I like. For example, all tables are restricted - dwarves will politely walk around only, and I treat them like walls in term of access. Also, in areas like the jail building with a main lobby and front desk, I make dwarves run up to the desk and check in first (a fortress guard will generally be sitting in his 'office' behind the desk) using high-priority lines before moving inside. It definitely adds to my sense of immersion. Plus I like unnecessary things like adding secretaries with full multi-desk offices for each of my main appointed nobles to have working for them and that sort of thing.

Ah yes, I do that too. For some reason, it bothers me to see an elephant, three dogs, and a herd of cattle standing on a table. Especially when a dwarf comes along and happily sits down to eat.

Oh yes, I also have a personal vendetta against all pets, especially cats. I always build special devices to destroy pets without harming the owners. Cats are different, though. Anyone who immigrates with a cat is given the custom profession "Cat-Friend" and is stationed in a sealed room with the cat. The room is then purged with magma.

My dwarves' rooms are always 3*3, and include a bed, door, cabinet, and chest. Legendaries get a 3*4 room with double doors, and occasionally a personal dining room upstairs. Nobles' offices always have to have a waiting room with a reception desk, then an "interior" door into the office itself. Nobles who behave (by restricting their mandates to obtainable materials) get clear glass aquariums with live fish.

I dig 1*2 niches in my great hall for artifacts to be placed. By messing around with stockpiles, I can get specific "craft" artifacts into specific places. Then, I seal them off with clear glass windows to give it a nice "museum" feel.

Cow, what is this Argument you speak of? It has eluded me completely, perhaps you could point it out again?

Back to the discussion, Family Guy has always been pretty much the same. They've always used the same jokes, same types of plot, blah blah blah. It's just that when it came out, said jokes were shiny and new, even if incredibly stupid. We laughed because it was new.

When the same jokes are thrown at us continuously for a few years, most of us tend to get bored of them. Family Guy's jokes have been overused to the point of death, but Seth keeps shaking their clattering, dried-up remains at us like some sort of voodoo charm. Frankly, I'm surprised that the show is still so popular.

PROTIP : Get a browser with spellcheck and nobody will know how drunk you are.

PROTIP 2: Use a Microsoft spellchecker, and people will constantly think you're drunk.

Remember, it will only make the hangover worse when you go through all your recent posts tomorrow.

General Discussion / Re: Bloom Box-Clean Energy Source?
« on: February 23, 2010, 12:21:18 am »
Quote
He has been running a pilot project of the technology at the University of Tennessee for the last two years, where the Bloom Box reportedly proved twice as efficient as traditional power sources and produced 60% fewer emissions.

I am incredibly skeptical of the take on efficiency. Alternative energy is horrifyingly inefficient when compared to coal/oil/nuclear. I always hear about how such-and-such energy source is "clean, efficient, and renewable." After looking into it, I always discover that the U.S. government is saturating the market with subsidies (like tax credits and the like) in order to make it a remotely viable option for businesses and residences.

I'm not going to be holding my breath, but if the man managed to create a new efficient energy source, good for him.

Wait, so you get completely hammered...

...and go on the Bay12 forums? You have problems, my friend.

I say that if someone decides to be an "uneducated troglodyte," they shouldn't be eligible for welfare and all that. It would be just stupid to give money to people who willingly contribute nothing to society.

Good job for your first fort! Why don't you dig out the sand wall in your wood stockpile and replace it with stone fortifications? (To build fortifications: b-C-f.) That way, you could station marksdwarves in there and shoot out at invaders near the bridge.

oh, and we recently signed a treaty of trade and mutual defense with another tribe. in addition to helping each other in war, we're exchanging goods. we're sending them cattle, and guess what they're sending us?

Beer. we'll have an army of drunken, fanatical, blood-loving warriors in no time.
