ooh. I hadn't been thinking of future advances, but yeah, that would be cool, and having it handled by the guild system would be awesome. That means this would kind of have to wait until the guild system comes in for it to be handled best. I think craftsmanship should be handled just like artifacts, with commissioned goods being of "commissioned" quality, or being of automatically masterwork quality.

Perhaps it's due to the fact that the water is considered to have stopped flowing due to the obsidian dam. If it were anywhere else, water would still be flowing in, and then getting dammed, but because it's on the edge it's stuck as dammed forever.

Nope. He's using a crossbow, has bolts left, kills lots of things, isn't hungry, thirsty, tired or sad. He has a strange thought that I thought you only got with heavily injured people: doesn't really care about anything anymore"

I've got 2 hunters (technically one hunter and one ranger) out hunting wolves. There's psace in the refuse stockpile but only one of my hunters is bringing back corpses. The other hunter just keep killing and killing without ever stopping to do anything useful with the bodies. This is forcing defenceless dwarves into the wilderness where goblin ambushes could strike and all for the sake of one stupid hunter.  can anyone suggest a fix?

I build all of my forts partially outside. The outside is where all my stockpiles are, most of my industries etc, and rooms or sensitive military gear is built slightly into the rock on the same z-level. I then build shafts into the earth for extra accommodation/loot.

the moment I saw the name of this topic I decided to build a grand room for a noble, with smoothed stone, engravings, and then a mosaic of floor tiles in the shape of a dwarf face in different substances. I'm going to use microcline for the eyes, chalk for the eyeballs, granite for the beard and hair, and probably use some of platinum or iron for the face.

A way to make nobles NOT a waste of time? EGAD!

I personally prefer the idea that the noble commissions an item and picks a dwarf randomly or out of his friends/loose acquaintances (with the weighting going towards close friends and partners). This dwarf then drops all other tasks, much like a fey mood, and proceeds from shop to shop crafting this mini artifact, taking over one shop at a time until it is all done. At the end they receive about 100-500 xp in each of the applicable skills (making them probably novice in a wide variety of skills) and deliver it to the noble in question.

A successful commission would boost happiness of both dwarves and transfer cash from noble to crafter.

An unsuccessful commission gives both of them an unhappy thought with additional punishment to the crafter.

What do you guys think?

Sounds good.

One thing I would like to add (that I was reminded of by another post) is that it's irritating making bone bolts from bones. I shove all the bones in an easy access stockpile and tell Urist Mclegendaryboltmaker to make bone bolts. he doesn't pick based on number of bolts, so he makes stacks out of those marmot bones that would be better spent on decorating or armour. Damn you non-specific orders!

Fired from catapults? That would have to be one hell of a shot. Given everything else that's possible I think if you were firing large cut soulgems from a catapult they would have an almost infinite range and only stop when they had hit 2 or 3 consecutive walls (basically only mountains could stop them). When all else fails, NUKE IT.

When magic is put in you may be able to trap the souls of people and make them do your bidding (essentially put them under your control). Adventurer mode would rock with that in.

indeed. I look forward to mass producing crafts until the market for them belongs to me, and then cutting off supply for a season or two and making vast profits when the market is better.
