DF Bug Reports / Re: [40d] King with no material preferences [BUG 220]

The same is true of the Advisor, presumably applying to all dwarves created during worldgen (your original 7 dwarves are created during embark, and all migrants, nobles included, are created when they appear at the map edge).

THe only problem is when the economy sets in and they start complaining about the lack of work.

Fortunately, they stop doing that once they become legendary at anything. Pump operating is a great way to get dwarves legendary since it requires no supervision (unless you want them to stop the instant they're legendary, so that a strange mood will snap them to their new profession), though it does tend to result in a lot of spam ("Urist McGymnast cancels Operate pump: Exhausted").

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Bloody Hands
« on: August 27, 2009, 08:47:31 pm »
I'm experimenting with getting my mighty warriors some better weapons. After a quick peek around, I found that half of my military has been fighting with wooden swords for the better part of their tenure, so I decided to get them to upgrade. My one guy has a problem though: I told him to dump his stupid elf weapon and get a new one, but when he goes to grab a new weapon, he fails. He goes to the weapon bin, then walks about 5 steps away before a little question mark appears above his head and he goes back to the weapon bin. Repeat until hungry. My assumption is that he is unable to pick up the weapon because his hands are covered in vomit and blood and cheetos or whatever.

So my question is: How do I make them wash their hands?

Take a closer look at his weapon - it may be an artifact, and champions will never drop artifacts willingly.

Tame it, if you can.

Edit: Hmm, doesn't look like you can. Oh well.

If it hasn't killed any of your dwarves, you most certainly can tame it. It can even be adopted as a (very) exotic pet, though it's usually more effective to build a silk factory.

Nationcrafted was abandoned shortly after, because I trained a military that could easily kill any goblin, and for some reason I stopped to recieve any more immigrants after some unfortunate miner fell down the aforementioned drawbridge in a testing session and after that I just got the announcement of my fort being too dangerous to travel to.

You do know that the "too dangerous" no-migrant situation is only temporary, right? Given a few years, preferably without any more dwarf deaths, they would've been coming in droves.

Chalk is a layer stone - it doesn't appear "within" any stone, but other stones do appear within it.

Also, sedimentary layers do not guarantee magnetite and bauxite - I've generated worlds with sites where the sedimentary layers were full of magnetite, gypsum, and talc, but not a single patch of bauxite.

There's an upper limit on how many different stone types can appear within a particular layer type, and it's possible for magnetite and/or bauxite to not get chosen. This is also why rock crystals are so damn uncommon - there's 36 types of gems that can appear anywhere, so the likehood of rock crystals being chosen is quite low.

The other is to put them in a magma proof bin (such as steel), immerse it in magma (don't try this with lignite or bituminous coal, it creates dwarven fire), remove the magma, let it cool, and the liquid rocks should re-solidify into solid stone instead of stone blocks.

This doesn't actually work - what it creates is a glob of Stone (adj)* which cannot be used for anything (and will probably be removed on the next season change), as opposed to an actual stone. If you saw this on the wiki, the wiki is actually incorrect in this case (and will be updated shortly).

* if you try this with something made of gold metal, you'll get a puddle of Molten Golden, which will cool and solidify into a glob of Golden

constructed floors on top of supports next to pressure plates as fairly successful landmines.

Very nice.  Respect for an ingenious design.

(Consider it stolen, if with thanks!  8) )

I should mention that the design wasn't originally mine - I saw the idea posted somewhere, though a search through several forums failed to locate who originally came up with it. It certainly does work, though, and it's highly amusing to have an ambush revealed with the message "A section of the cavern has collapsed!" (almost as amusing as having a waterfall pouring through grates in the center of a meeting area and getting "Urist McLoafer cancels Attend Party: Dangerous terrain.").

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Cage transport?

Doors probably wouldn't make any difference when you abandon - even if you have a room sealed off with a floodgate, items inside will still be scattered across the hillside when you visit or reclaim.

No, since animals will escape from their cages (and restraints) when you abandon.

Forming obsidian won't pause the game, but if you drop it into the middle of the pipe it'll immediately cave-in (and fall out the bottom of the map, presumably), which will pause very frequently.

If you really want to drain the ocean, just use an aquifer. It's easy to set up, and the actual draining happens over the span of a few seconds, at least in-game (for you, it might take a half hour before your framerate increases above 1 frame per minute).

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: where is the coal on dwarf heaven map?
« on: August 26, 2009, 04:30:18 pm »
There actually isn't any bituminous coal or lignite in Dwarf Heaven, as they only appear in sedimentary rock layers (which are entirely absent due to the volcano). For the same reason, there is no bauxite, and none of the Dwarven civilizations (4 to choose from) have access to it either, making "heaven" quite a bit of a stretch unless you've modded your raws to make more stones magma-safe.

I am going to chime in and say that I have also had dwarves killed/knocked out by collapsing constructed floors.

I'll go even further and note that I've used constructed floors on top of supports next to pressure plates as fairly successful landmines.

Code: [Select]
Z+0
....
.^I.
....

Z+1
····
·++·
····
(plus temporary access stairs needed during construction)

Doesn't even matter what materials you use - I made a few out of wood and managed to reveal a goblin ambush - the one underneath died instantly, and the others were knocked unconscious and subsequently ran away.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Organiser experience
« on: August 26, 2009, 03:28:01 pm »
A quick test with Dwarf Companion indicates that it's 10 experience per item, so approving a job of "collect sand x30" will give your manager 300 experience, the same as 30 jobs of "collect sand x1".

Note that the jobs don't actually have to be completed - once it's approved, you can just cancel it and abort all of the tasks in the workshops. Even better, you can request a task that you cannot possibly perform (such as cutting rough gems you don't have), which has the added bonus of spamming you with cancellations (which gets condensed down since the same dorf will usually cancel nearly all of them at once) the instant it gets approved.
