DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Anvil Trap
« on: July 21, 2009, 04:09:31 pm »
Am I the only one that thinks it should be possible to load stonefall traps with anvils? One would expect a large block of iron/steel to hit a bit harder than a chunk of stone, and it would give anvils an alternate usage aside from building workshops (rather limited) and trading (though they don't fit in bins and they weigh a ton).

It'd also be quite amusing.

I do use generic labordwarves for things like mining (no, I dont give a damn as to the number of rocks that spawn. I might think otherwise if I found adamantine, but barring valuable ores, and coal, I dont give a damn)

According to the wiki, mining adamantine always gives you a chunk of raw adamantine, regardless of the miner's skill level.

You know, maybe this is why my military dwarves' custom nicknames keep disappearing...

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: How long for fish stocks to recover?
« on: July 21, 2009, 12:41:21 pm »
It's also possible that they're fishing in the wrong places. When my fort first got fisherdwarf immigrants, they got tons of turtles from the nearby murky pools for a while (to the point that my garbage dump was overflowing with shells and I had to atomsmash about a hundred of them) before they stopped altogether (and I've now taken to importing turtles and cave lobsters). Now they only bring in char and steelhead trout from the brook (which is thankfully still marked as fishable), though I suspect that'll eventually be gone too.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Water reactor - preliminary stage
« on: July 21, 2009, 11:32:40 am »
considering that wooden walls are indestructible, I dont see why wooden waterwheels wouldn't be...

Walls are constructions, and are thus indestructible. Waterwheels are machine components, and machine components can definitely break - wooden screw pumps catch fire when pumping magma, so one would expect the same to happen with a wooden water wheel submerged in magma.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: The merits of soap
« on: July 21, 2009, 11:09:51 am »
This begs the question
No it doesn't.

what can I make out of soap that will harness this value into something that I can use to help shut up my nobles?

As mentioned, anything made out of blocks. A well built with a dragon soap block will probably keep your dwarves quite happy (I think - don't recall if component value is taken into account or just its quality). If your King hasn't arrived yet and wants high road value, a few tiles of dragon soap road will satisfy his requirement almost instantly.

slaughter all the goblins. just send out brave soldier dwarves. It would be like a rite of passage. Eventually they would all be wiped out and you can just climb up and retrieve it.

As he stated, military dwarves wouldn't be able to get through the windows, and civilians would be too scared to deconstruct them (unless they were blind).

The safest vault a dwarf can build:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

But there's no fun in a vault like that.

Dig below, use ramp to isolate the tower from surrounding rock.  Collapse tower.

The tower would have been built to the bottommost Z-level, so it'd be impossible to dig underneath it.

I'm pretty sure you've won this thread. Possibly the entire forum, even.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Interface question

The colored bar on the right seems to indicate a cross sample of the rough region in which your cursor is located (the same as the upper-right number) relative to your current Z-level - light blue is open space, brown is stone, and the bright tile in the middle (light blue or yellow) shows your current Z-level.

You know, I think this is what happened in my fort quite a while ago - one of my champions was resting from a sparring injury, then for no apparent reason I got a notification that a child had died of thirst.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Collapse!
« on: July 21, 2009, 07:36:31 am »
a more basic question but related to collapse/cave-in

I'm a bit confused about when a room will collapse. I've read the Boatmurdered stories and there they are talking about this huge corridor on the right side of the map. Someone put also supports into the big room.
But in a tutorial someone build a 40x40 room without supports.

In the wiki the article about cave-in says that a collapse happens when a floor tile isn't connected to any support.
So, can i dig out a complete layer of a mountain without risking  collapse? Or do i have to add supports?

Back in the pre-3D days of 0.23 (during which Boatmurdered took place), digging out a 7x7 area without any supports could cause the ceiling to cave in. Ever since the game became 3D, cave-ins only happen if there is stone or constructions that aren't being held up by anything.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: So, elves arrived...
« on: July 20, 2009, 02:14:28 pm »
I don't kill elves in hope they will give me something cool next year. I love modding bears to be trainable(note: I'm also on the orc mod so don't blame me)

Every year, the elves near my fortress bring me several dozen bins of Rope reed cloth, a few berries, and nothing else (except maybe some logs if my stockpiles are low). This year, in anticipation of their arrival, I built them a special trade depot inside my obsidian factory, in case they decided to bring something useful for a change.

They didn't.

How the hell do you have 94? Your dwarves spend all day every day getting pregnant by the sounds of it.

Bear in mind that my fortress is over 10 years old, and I think I've got about 8 or 9 married couples, so it adds up rather quickly.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Glass Work Orders
« on: July 20, 2009, 12:03:04 pm »
Leaving my regular glass furnaces collecting sand on repeat would quickly use up all of my bags, leaving me nothing to hold milled plants or quarry bush leaves. I currently have 3 legendary glass crafters (and could train some more if needed), so the 6 magma glass furnaces are just for ease of queueing up a large number of tasks (due to having to deal with the regular glass furnaces and not being able to use work orders) and they get cleared out pretty quickly.

I suspect I'm just going to ditch the regular glass furnaces and build some more of the magma variety in the space I had originally prepared (I've got room for up to 36 magma workshops and can expand to fit 48 without having to dig another channel from the magma pipe).
