I always put torches on the opposite side of a block from the direction I came from, and make sure to put torches at intersections.

That's a really good idea.  The new tracks may also help with the issue, but are probably expensive too (haven't played with them yet).

It's highly unlikely now, but I once died sleeping next to soldiers and was trapped in a corner as a disciple swiped at me and two soldiers were sleeping right next to me. I had no chance since it got the first blow as I died right next to them.

For future reference, if you shout ('s', I believe) sometimes it'll wake up NPCs.

They are programmed to eat only when hungry and I've never seen them eat when not hungry. I'll check again, might be a bug.

---
Keep posting AI suggestions, I'll read all of them but don't have time to answer all the points.

Well can you program them to carry spares?  Makes holing up with followers completely pointless.

And here's an 'in-action' shot of the bug.

Both hungry.  I've waited several turns to allow them to pick up the groceries, but they just stand there.  Take item directive is on, and they both have free inventory slots (as shown with Patty).

Alright I'm having a bit better time with the game now.  I dug down under my house and found a vast cavern network.  Been exploring that a bit and have found gold, diamonds, and the normal coppery stuff (iron?  It's copper in the blocks but turns to an ironish color when smelted).  Got ganked once and died, then fell to my death once (and died).  Never did find the corpses.

How do y'all go about charting the depths?  I put torches everywhere, which shows where I've been, but no real clear progression of 'this is how to get back'.   I was thinking of carving arrows in the wall or doing sign posts (but those are expensive).   Any better ideas?  So far I've just gotten lucky and stumbled upon my entrance.

Well I broke down and bought it, but I kind of feel like I wasted my money at the moment.

How are y'all getting those awesome maps to form?  What options are y'all using?   I've tried various combinations of floating, deep, island, standard, hell, forest, etc. and get nothing like what y'all are getting.  Also are y'all playing infdev or indev?

They should take the food and eat when hungry.
The only reason they do not :
1. Their directives is set to "don't take items".
2. Their inventory is full. Most likely you gave them too much items, because they are supposed to always keep one slot free for food.
3. You gave them an order to guard/patrol and let them rot here with no food.
4. They are in danger and don't have time to eat (unlikely).

I think the only thing that it could be (because 1 and 3 aren't even triggered, and 4 isn't likely as there's no zombies around) is 2, but even when they do have an empty slot, they don't pick up food.  Or rather, they pick it up, but they don't SAVE it.  They immediately eat the food and then its wasted.  If they'd pick up food and save it for when they're hungry (or to just have a spare), it'd be much better.

May I ask, what is a neck leg?

Good question.  Not sure what I meant there unless I just couldn't decide where to be bitten.  Or the neck of the leg, AKA the thigh, perhaps.

My subconscious does weird shit.

Edit:  Man it's disappointing how bad the AI is but still, it's a pretty fun game.  I'm on Day 20 now and have an Army Rifle with 120 rounds of ammo, an Army vest, a med kit, and 3 Army rations.  If followers worked a bit better I'd have some of them too but they all forget to eat (even if food is right there on the ground) and die.

"Day 6:  the second day in the gun shop turned fortress.  Dean collapsed yesterday from hunger but Joe and I are still holding strong.  I feel a bit guilty not sharing my groceries with Joe but he's not long for this world any how.  Dawn has arrived, and I feel myself learning more and more daily, maybe I'll survive this yet.  I'll sleep during the day while the zombies are less relentless."

"Day 6 - 2:  Awakened to sharp pains in my neck leg. Looked up to see the zombie of Joe chewing on me.  Blasted him with a shotgun and rolled back over.  The wait continues."

I freaking love these 'survival' type of games.  Anyone know of others that are similar to them?

Looks good.  I really dig the 'attacking you' vs 'attacking others' thing.  Hard to tell unless they start moving towards you lol.

Just started playing this today and gotta say it's pretty fun for no flashy graphics or anything.  My first two attempts ended comically ("I think I'll break down the barricade to this door.  Oh hey someone's inside.  What do the exclamation points mean?"  *blam*  and the second one was me getting chased by a zombie hoard and some jackass leaving two flaming cars side by side on a 2 tile wide streat.  Doh!

Currently though I've found oodles of guns and am currently barricaded in a gun shop with a stockpile of ammo with three others.  Unfortunately they're not with me (don't have leader skill yet) but hopefully I can recruit them at the end of the day.   Anyhow, got two full barricades at the front doors and pushed 4 shelves in front of the entrance, so it'll take them a bit of doing to get inside.  Also, there's a National Guard unit somewhere around me.

Could someone break this down for me? It's been forever since I've played MineCraft and when I did, all you did was build shit, which was fun in its own right, but now it looks like you've got health, armor(?), and some actual goals or some such?

Is this still multiplayer and does the DF community have a server?

I don't have a suggestion but if y'all do start up a succession game I'd like to put my name on the list.  Checked into the Comm games forum but didn't see a thread yet.

Well, I take great lengths to dump all the stone in my fort.  Takes a while but I'm pretty anal about it.  Got to the point where I literally ran out of stone in my fort (got error messages from my masons).   I atom smash it regularly too, so it's not like it's just sitting at the bottom of a lake or anything; to my knowledge it's actually destroyed (or as destroyed as you can get in DF).   So I'm not sure that items are that big of a concern.  I think it's the pathing that does it.

I'd imagine so, but I don't have that kind of coin.
