DF Gameplay Questions / Fullscreen Bug

I could not make a thread in the bug forum so doing it here.

I tried using fullscreen and while the window does change to fullscreen mode the image stays the same size as the window mode leaving it in the top left corner and just a black void covering the rest of the screen.

Is this a common issue already resolved? I am using the latest version but could not find anything talking about it with the Search option.

DF Gameplay Questions / AMBUSH! CURSE THEM!

1. The Tower - Been having ambushes alot and was wanting to know, if I built a tower going all the way to the very top z-level then left the top exposed would a dwarf staying up there (im thinking making a barracks zone on top with bed/food to keep a dwarf up there, but dont know if that will work. Or maybe door it off and once he is in forbid the door.) be able to spot everything in my region? Like ambushes, theives, etc.

2. The Wall - Recently have had dwarves scatter after an ambush appeared while they were hauling stuff from the depot. Was wanting to know if I completely wall in my depot and leave a 5tile wide bridge pulled up will, trade caravans not show up at all without a way to get in right away? This way I could lower the bridge, let the caravans in, raise the bridge and have the hall-way there so trade could take place.

DF Gameplay Questions / Siege Weapons

Do ballista and catapults work the same way as marksdwarves? I know that If they are on top of a 1z wall they cant shoot at anything 1tile against the walls base (2z=2tiles, 5z=5tiles), so does that work the same way for siege weapons? Or is there a minimum range for them like they cant shoot anything 2 tiles or closer even on the ground?

Also, can they shoot over walls?

Was wanting to know what biome I needed to play in so I could have water, every map I have played on all the water has completely vanished after 2 years. Started a new one today, 'warm' temperature, and there were 14 very large lakes, alot of them over 30 tiles, with all of them being 7/7 and every drop of water vanished in the 30 minutes I played it.

DF Gameplay Questions / Fake Lake

Am currently trying to make a small lake next to my fortress and having some problems. When I started out at this area there were 15+ lakes around 5-7 depth but now the only water on my map is 3 small lakes in the very top right area (my fortress is almost at the bottom) and they only get above 2 depth during rain.

I havent drained any of the lakes so I dont know where all the water went, anyways, I set up a channel going to a channeled area next to my fortress which I lined with walls and floored, but I cant get any water to it. Whenever I pump water it gets about half-way down the channel then goes into the dirt I guess.



1. Will covering / flooring my channel keep water from seeping into the dirt or evaporating? Or would it be better to dig down to stone then make a channel there from one lake to the other?

2. Is it normal for all the lakes in my area to dissapear? I am in a completely level woodland area, nothing but grass, trees, and all the empty lakes.

Am seriously shocked and confused here, ive never failed to get crafters the materials they need before. One of my founding farmers who only had fields farming turned on for the last year now (was originally an axedwarf if that helps any), claimed a craftdwarfs workshop and then spent a good 30mins running around my fort doing who knows what.

After that she sat at the workshop and the text was "dwarf sketches image of waterfall, dwarf sketches image of something, dwarf sketches image of something" Obviously I cant remember the other two. Anyways she just went 'stark raving mad' and started running around my fortress. I was busy and didnt know that when she wanst moving that she wasnt working on the artifact since there was no demand text.

Can anyone tell me what I did wrong? Wiki wasnt any help, possibly due to me entering wrong searches.

DF Gameplay Questions / Floors / smoothed floors

Was wanting to know if there was any advantages to smoothing floors or constructing floors (for soil layer hallways etc) besides the $$$* bonus and covering up stairways. (Have heard you can use floors to make a ceiling for indoor areas outside?)


Common sense says that dwarves would be able to move stuff faster but I havent really noticed a change. Ive been smoothing the stone in my barracks right away and that seems to help with preventing injuries but not sure if it isnt just a coincidence.

DF Gameplay Questions / Zankaru cancels fun: dwarves on break

Was wanting to know if dwarves went on break often after hauling heavy items, say, if I decided to move my armor stockpile that needs 50+ steel items moved more than 80 tiles?

I have had my haulers go on break atleast twice in this hour alone and apprently a 'break' last weeks in DF. Is there any way to keep dawrves from going on break?

DF Gameplay Questions / Deforestation

Due to the smithy council yelling all the time for more charcoal I have begun my campaign against the forest! Many squirrels were harmed!


My question is, if I have my dwarfs cut down every tree on my map, so I can fill up my planned 300x300 wood stockpile room and never need wood again, will trees stop growing since they were all cut down? I recently have only cut a quarter of my map after I had sectioned it into 4 areas, cutters just cut down the last few so I dont know if more trees are growing or not.

Also was wanting to know how I grow trees underground? I know how to make large rooms where they can be grown with the pumping and all that, but do I get seeds from elves or something?

DF Bug Reports / [40d] Driver Fail

Not sure if this is DF only but I only have problems with it while playing DF.

DF will stop responding then I get a message saying:
''Display Driver nvlddmkm has stopped working and recovered"

Anyone know whats wrong? Its happened twice now on this fortress right after my marksdwarf hits legendary xbow skill.

Have seen multiple images of dwarves attacking stuff like.

Dwarf hits goblins hard with hammer.
Upper body mangled.
Lower body mangled.
head mangled. Lopped off.
goblin explodes.


etc, etc. Was wanting to know how I could use that? I tried 'a' but that dosent seem to follow combat, and I really would like to see the details of my legendary champion wrestlers punching terrified groundhogs to death.

DF Gameplay Questions / Atrifacts

Two of my craft dwarfs just made two artifacts, a prefect gem (4800*..<shrug>) and a iron gauntlet (48,000*...woot!)

Two questions:

1. How do I sell / stockpile artifacts? I heard cpt.duck mention selling artifacts in one of the early videos he made. Both the gem and gauntlet are sitting in the workshops even though I have gem/armor stockpiles being used.

2. I have heard that making an artifact grants legendary status in whatever skill once completed. Was wanting to know if that was still a fact in 40d because my craft dwarfs are the same skill they were before completing artifact.

DF Gameplay Questions / Strip Sparring

I have two wrestlers training right now (my first two champions, yay) and one of them just ripped the others chestplate off and is carrying it around. Thought it was odd that he didnt drop it because the barracks it littered with civilian clothes that they pulled off each other.

Does anyone know how I can get my dwarf to drop the armor? I have tried forbidding it and marking for dump but he is still carrying it around.

DF Gameplay Questions / Goblin Ambush Spawn

On top level I made a stairway going down one level to my fort, and around that stairway on the surface I made a small wall enclosure with a pit/bridge as the only way in. Around this I made very large walled in area with my trade depot inside and the only way in being a 5tile wide bridge over a pit.

Lost my entire fortress to an ambush (my very first one) because my plan was that I would raise the inner bridge while invaders were running in, then I would raise the outer bridge. That would be my archers cue to cause goblin death by flying pointy sticks from inside the inner wall. All fine and well except the ambush spawned *inside* the inner wall, skipping over both bridges, and then down the stairs and into my fort.

Was wanting to know where the spawn of an ambush is determined.

DF Gameplay Questions / Stockpiles

Have a stockpile next to my future dining hall since in my last fortress the prepared meals kept rotting in random places. Have it right next to my kitchens where they are being made, but none of my dwarves will get the meals out of the kitchen buildings and take it to the stockpile. A dwarf did go get a barrel a while ago but I checked and it is empty.

Im pretty sure my other stockpiles have prepared food turned off, so does anyone know if there is a delay on meals being taken to piles or something?

Also was wanting to know if my record keeper's progress helped prevent stockpile confusion. One example would be a dwarf taking food to a furniture stockpile.
