I have gotten dwarven caravans, yes. Atleast I believe they are dwarven, im positive no elves have shown up. Both caravans had a ton of steel/iron items, anvils, dwarven drinks.

Row - asked and answered. (See 2nd post up, & durt's Q.)

Zan - When you embarked, was there another dwarven civilization on the map? (seen via Tab key, embark screen only.)  If unsure, you'll have to get to the world-embark map (by regenning or copying/changing name/re-embarking) and checking.

Nope, only goblins. Your talking about the little red lines next to the races name right?

I have two wrestlers training right now (my first two champions, yay) and one of them just ripped the others chestplate off and is carrying it around. Thought it was odd that he didnt drop it because the barracks it littered with civilian clothes that they pulled off each other.

Does anyone know how I can get my dwarf to drop the armor? I have tried forbidding it and marking for dump but he is still carrying it around.

I had a similar question. I am currently mid-winter of my second year and still have not seen one imigrant. I am a noob at DF but this is my 5th...maybe 6th fort and I have gotten imigrants every time before winter of first year, I even got 24 migrants at once a few times.

Created Wealth: 36,300*
Imported Wealth: 17,540*
Exported Wealth: 0*
Population: 7
Food Stores: 300
Fortress Details:
Legendary Dining Hall
30+ Bedrooms
40x40tile Barracks
2 Active Farm Plots (big as allowed)
100x100tile Crafting area (multiple smithys, mason/carpentry shops)

Does anyone know a fast way to get some imigrants? Two of my 7 are champion wrestlers, and one is a dedicated farmer, so it is getting really frustrating having only 4 dwarves being my miners/masons/carpenters/smiths/haulers.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: How to identify the founders?
« on: August 03, 2009, 03:53:08 pm »
When your naming them it helps alot, for example I have capped letters at the beginning of the names.

/X\ Dwarf = Founder
/P\ Dwarf = Professional (only does skill, dosent haul)
/L\ Dwarf = Legendary Skill

Does that mean they will be able to 'sneak' past a bridge even if it is raised?

DF Gameplay Questions / Goblin Ambush Spawn
« on: August 02, 2009, 07:49:34 am »
On top level I made a stairway going down one level to my fort, and around that stairway on the surface I made a small wall enclosure with a pit/bridge as the only way in. Around this I made very large walled in area with my trade depot inside and the only way in being a 5tile wide bridge over a pit.

Lost my entire fortress to an ambush (my very first one) because my plan was that I would raise the inner bridge while invaders were running in, then I would raise the outer bridge. That would be my archers cue to cause goblin death by flying pointy sticks from inside the inner wall. All fine and well except the ambush spawned *inside* the inner wall, skipping over both bridges, and then down the stairs and into my fort.

Was wanting to know where the spawn of an ambush is determined.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Stockpiles
« on: July 31, 2009, 05:53:39 am »
How many dwarves do you have? If you still have your starting seven, there's probably too much hauling of other things being done. I'd remove wood hauling or other items that don't rot for the time being, or going to orders and switching off a few gathers.

As for you hauling food to the furniture stockpile, he might be hauling seeds to a bag or something like that, or food to an empty barrel that will get moved to the food stockpile in due time.

Guess you were right, still on my original 7 and they were too busy. Fixed now, thanks.

DF Gameplay Questions / Stockpiles
« on: July 31, 2009, 04:44:32 am »
Have a stockpile next to my future dining hall since in my last fortress the prepared meals kept rotting in random places. Have it right next to my kitchens where they are being made, but none of my dwarves will get the meals out of the kitchen buildings and take it to the stockpile. A dwarf did go get a barrel a while ago but I checked and it is empty.

Im pretty sure my other stockpiles have prepared food turned off, so does anyone know if there is a delay on meals being taken to piles or something?

Also was wanting to know if my record keeper's progress helped prevent stockpile confusion. One example would be a dwarf taking food to a furniture stockpile.

DF Gameplay Questions / Dropping Gear
« on: July 29, 2009, 01:01:42 am »
I have 3 marksdwarfs so far and I equipped 2 of them with full ironsets and one with a full steel set (my squad leader) due to lack of coal. Anyways I have made two more steel sets with X/bows for my underlings but I cant get them to drop the iron gear.

I have tried setting their pieces to 'dump' and nothing, then tried 'forbid' and still nothing. They are not on duty and there are multiple refuse/armor piles so I dont know what is wrong.

Also was wanting to know how I could get my soldiers to drop their civilian clothes also, main reason being it helps me alot if I can see what my guys are wearing without having to search through 30 items every-time. Also I dont think mittens are very dwarfy and want to dump/sell all my pairs.

Your walls do NOT need to be thick.  Not much can actually destroy a wall, so a one-thick wall is as good as a three-thick one.

You can't normally remove up or up/down stairs that are below the only access point to them, as even if every tile around the stairs is inaccessible, the dwarf will stand on the bottom of the stairs while removing it, trapping himself when it's removed.  If you dug out the stairs (using d->j etc.) then you can build a floor (b->C->f) on top of the stairs, and things won't be able to get out.

If you constructed (with b->C->d etc.) the stairs, then it's a bit more difficult, as the dwarf will try to go BELOW the stairs to remove them, still trapping himself.  First build a floor hatch on top of the stairs, then lock it (q, move over it, l) so that dwarves cannot pass through it.  Then designate the stair it's built on for deconstruction (d->n).  A dwarf will come over and deconstruct it WITHOUT going under it (assuming there's no other route under there, as if there were, worrying about a dwarf getting stuck down there would be pointless) and leave the material from the deconstructed stair on top of the hatch.  If you want to recover this material, then construct something else with it nearby, or designate it for dumping somewhere.  Then remove the hatch.  If the material is still on the hatch, it will fall down.  Then construct a floor (b->C->f) on top of the hole, though this step is somewhat optional, as lacking the stair at the top will prevent enemies from pathing up and out.  It's still probably a good idea.  (I told you this way was more difficult.)

They'll only use wood and bone bolts for practice, but when it's time for actually fighting, they'll use whatever is available...  including their practice bolts.

-Thanks, that helped. =)
-Was making it 3 tiles wide so I could put catapults and stuff on top, not really familiar about em but I saw them mentioned in the labor list.
-well crap, guess I can forbid the practice bolts or something.

-only post on here if I have a question I cant find on the wiki, im new to wiki's and such so easier to just ask here than browse for hours.
