DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Work pheasants! *whip*

Building says inactive-waiting for mechanic, and I know my dwarves can reach it because its right next to my forges. Gonna try to build it in another spot.

Also yes I made a third pick for my new miner, already had 2 miners/picks, still not doing anything. says No Job for the entire last season.

Dont know what flashing X you mean, but its been maybe 4 seasons since they got there and I had them all doing masonry to finish my perimeter walls with carpentry turned on aswell incase my carpenters were asleep, but when I turn off masonry/carpentry they wont do anything.

I did draft one and he has been practicing with his xbow and picked up his armor just fine, so dont know whats wrong.

Got about 10 pheasants in the last group of migrants and needed some mechanics. So I set one to have mechanics skill in the labor menu and took everything else off but it has been almost a full season and he wont go build my mechanics workshop. I made sure that it wasnt inactive and that it was accessible.

Had same problem with trying to make a pheasant into a miner and did same thing, turned everything off except mining, but he wont do anything either.

???

Is there any way to use this with a 40d program, and if not are there any big differences between 40d and 39e.

Alright thanks.

Well how about making a moat? I made a 3tile thick wall with a 5tile wide / 3tile tall gate that I channeled completely and put a retractable bridge over, so it is only way into my fortress.

Was trying to make it so I could retract bridge incase of an attack and let my archers shoot from walls. I heard that I need 7/7 water for anyone to drown in the moat so tried channeling one level below the bridge, then another down that. After that was finished I found out that to remove the stairs my dwarves had to be on the same level as the stairs. (Didnt work very well, ended up drowning my first Legendary Miner/Mason) Does anyone know an easy way to make a moat without leaving any stairs behind intact. Dont want the enemys to just climb out after falling in.

Got a squad of 3 crossbowmen and have them training with wood bolts with a bunch of iron arrows for combat, but was wondering how they know when to use which bolt? So far havent had the chance to shoot at anything because by the time those bloody little kobolds appear they are already running out the door and I dont keep my guys on duty. (Got backpacks/waterskins and assigned 2 rations/water but scared of them starving or something)

DF Gameplay Questions / Building with Dolomite

- Was wanting to know how I could build stuff out of dolomite? (walls, etc.)  I took it off the stock list to not be reserved, but it still wont let me build walls out of it. Bug or game?

I know its used for making steel but I have over 1k of this stuff and my fortress is still tiny.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Walls, Ore, and Weapons oh my!
« on: July 17, 2009, 03:13:07 pm »
2. I'm not sure if ore is generated when you create the world but I do know that cetrain ores lie within certain stone types and that you don't find more ore the farther you go down. to find out what stone type you have check out the wiki under http://dwarf.lendemaindeveille.com/index.php/Stone

Thanks =)

Double thick walls? Very, um... dwarven...

well that sucks....can I build another wall blocking off my wall top on the above level so they cant get onto the wall even if they go to the wall-top level?

That's a good solution.

Another is to dig a channel between the wall end and the plateau, so they can't walk from one to another, or build an entirely diff wall on the plateau - you don't want them standing up there and shooting down into your compound anyway, right?

Ores are gen'd during worldgen, and are believe to be solely dependent on the "layer" they are found in - not the level, but the dominant stone type for that area block.  A layer of basalt at ground level has the same characteristics and chance for the same ores as one at any other level, plus or minus.

Read the wiki on "layer", "stone" and "vein".

Eventually they will be 4-thick with a 5 wide moat in front of the wall, once I can figure out how to get water from the river to go up two levels. funny, the water had no qualms about going up stairs to flood my first fortress, but it refuses to do the same thing now that I want it to.

Crap, didnt even think about that. gonna have to make walls around the top of my courtyard now too.....seems like it would be easier to seal my entrance, then make a tunnel from inside leading outside then up to ground level where I have made a fort in the middle of a field.

Added walls to the upper level with floors in front of those, so there is no way for them to get onto the wall-top now?

DRAGONS!?!?  well cant really focus on my defenses yet since Im only like 5 seasons into my fort and havent even found any ore yet. I dont even have 20+ dwarves yet.

Got 3 questions.

1. If the end of my wall stops at the side of a mountain (see pic below) and the top of the wall is on the same level as the mountain one level up, will enemies be able to ignore my defenses by walking up to the next level and walk onto my wall-top?

2. Was wanting to know if there were any rules on where ore is? Like are all the ore tiles made when you generate the world and if there are none anywhere in the map you embarked on tough luck? Also if there was a higher chance of finding ore based on level, like im currently mining exploration tunnels on the bottom level, will it be easier to find iron ore on say...2 or 3 levels below ground or 8?

3. Was told in another thread that copper picks cause more damage than iron picks, so does that work for all weapons as well? Including Crossbows, and does a wooden crossbow follow same rules?

Why do you even want to change picks? Pick material only affects the damage they do, not the speed of mining.

oh? well nevermind then.

Just started making new weapons since I ran into a vein of iron ore and made some iron picks. Was wanting to know how I could get my two legendary miners to stop using the copper picks I started with and to pick up the Iron picks.

Ive tried setting the copper picks as forbidden in the stocks menu but they kept using them, and tried setting them to melt but nobody did anything.

Watched about half of the cpt.duck tutorial videos but dont remember him mentioning how to do this in the videos ive seen so far.

Noticed that if I dig out a mountain on ground level but leave two or three squares that leads up to the next level of the mountain it will not collapse. Even if the upper level of the mountain stretches like 60 squares away from the 2-3 ground level squares I left un-mined.

Sorry if I typed it to make it confusing.
