DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Where's my aquifer?
« on: September 02, 2009, 04:19:14 pm »
While an area can contain an aquifer, I believe that's more of a regional issue. The aquifer could be in that layer, but not necessarily on your section of the map.

You may need to mine out the whole area and hope for the best. At least it'll go fast.

You may want to save first, then Ctrlaltdel once you've found it, and go back. If you don't find it... better batten down the hatches and make sure you be careful to assign armor to your military and guards before putting them to training.

I have been employing pumps, manually operated in what I call a shunt position, near the pipe. Sucks up magma from the pipe and mold, and sends it out through a constructed walled hallway so it won't overflow as dangerously when the pit underneath is filled to 7/7. (I have had several levers melt, though.)

I think a better way to do all this is likely to create a standard sectional template, formed around 3-wide hallway positions, on all underground z-levels.

(Part of the whole process is digging out each level and sectioning it to be dropped in pieces, so that the calculations don't take all day... but it does take longer to build and link all that stuff.)

If I can combine the sections to drop with natural walls to form the molds, I could probably minimize and standardize fill time per level, as well as the large-scale stone removal (using Dig Deeper, so orthoclase doesn't get melted, sadly. But there's several magma-safe rocks, which is awesome).

I have 15 or more legendary miners, and a few more miners in training, but it does hurt my FPS to generate that much stone. Maybe I should check into dwarf manager/companion to make things more efficient RE: hauling.

By using natural walls, I'd be able to skip the wall building, and then I could dig them out as the middle of three-wide hallways and channel the non-obsidian wall for filling with magma.

That's probably the smartest way to do it. Any other thoughts?

DF Gameplay Questions / Best way to completely fill a z-level with obsidian?
« on: September 02, 2009, 03:30:30 pm »
As the topic.

I've been trying to make an obsidian city from the ground up, punching a hole in the lowest level of the magma pipe, and channeling it into constructed, magma-safe bridge controlled chambers, but it's slow.

I've started piping water into one of the molds to then channel out a more narrow corridor for the magma, but I'm not sure if that will speed up delivery through the area. I will eventually need to refill all the narrow channels of the walls with magma to get a solid block... Hm.

Would it be better to create sections vertically, casting the obsidian in an underground tower, digging out a chamber to fill with magma and then pouring from there into the next section/adjacent tower, and then going about the whole process again, or would an approach of filling each z-level with magma then dumping water  onto  before pouring the next level of magma from higher up be more efficient?

The death happened, and the funeral was taken care of today. as such, I'd love to participate in the next SG, (after PAX).

Does she need to eat?

Nope. She has taken on one great dwarf tradition, though. She's a nudist.

Yep. I had a human diplomat squeeze out a baby during one season, which she then left at the fort.

Yikes. What happened to the kid?

She's still there.  Happily growing up in my lake basin, a child already... They grow so fast!

But they don't drink or grow beards, and I'm too busy to trap her.

Due to an impending death in the family, I can't participate on the 26th.

Beautiful:
Turning my 'visitors courtyard' from the white of dolomite to blood red during an orc siege.
Ugly:
Cleaning up all that steel.

Beautiful: Magma mist and dust rising from my magma casts when I drop the 40x40 mined-out floor into the walled center, getting rid of lots of stone.

Ugly: waiting for ages for the next cistern to fill.

Beautiful: creating a waterfall-creating river through the fortress that never floods and powers its own pumps to circulate the water into the freshwater lake.

Ugly: Forgetting about the skeletal fish in the terrifying lake.

Beautiful: Mining out entire levels of a map to prepare for replacing the entire map with obsidian, seeing the nodes and veins and layers (as noted).

Ugly: YOU HAVE STRUCK _____ during the mineout.

"But wait, I have... AMNESIA!"

(lever pulled, magma and elves pour onto father of Urist McAllMyChildren's children)

So, that works even if you have them dump their shoe, for example?

I've found that ex-wrestlers tend to have stuff held (barrels, socks, caps, etc) that makes them technically a melee weapon user, and you need to dump the item they're holding in order to get them to start practicing at the range.

387
If you had them training as wrestlers first (a good idea), they may still be carrying things that they grabbed off their opponents, and that will make them unable to fire their crossbows.

Check their inventories, see if they've got anything but crossbows/shields/gloves/gauntlets in their hands, and dump any items that don't fall into the above.

What I find most interesting/sad is how effective lying is.

All of the contention, stalling, and intentional twisting of facts is driving down public opinion. It's remarkably effective, and with the extremists who want to portray Obama as racist, and his administration as being akin to the third reich being 'entertaining' for the news, it only helps to perpetuate the lies and drag it down further.

People are scared, and started treating their healthcare like a sacred cow without understanding what is going on in the current system, and how they're being manipulated. By having a few loud idiots yell about wrong information, and the press deciding to use things like a man screaming at Specter for leaving before he could ask his question (not because he was upset about the bill), and looping it, it influences other people without any basis in fact. Of course the polls keep dropping. This is important, and the opposition is working to run out the clock, for profit or spite.

In short, there's a difference between what "The People" are saying, and what "the loudest" are saying. Sadly, the latter influence the former, because of how the "Lie-beral" media works (again, thanks to the free market). Sensationalism sells better than fact, and is easier to churn out because you don't have to do any research.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Feedback on a fort

Use two raising bridges (2x3 area) along a long, 3-wide corridor. One bridge goes at each end.  By pulling the levers for them, you can completely block off entrance to your fort, and have a shooting gallery for when your marksdwarves wake up. Have a little raised tower with fortifications for shooting down, so you can keep anything short of an elite bowman/crossbowman from shooting back at your marksdwarves.
