Correct me if I am wrong, but I never got my wood to be dumped into a garbage pile.
All other items were dumped from food to finished goods or weapons/armor.
For some reason the wood isnt dumped.  ???

In preparation for magma I dig a long corridor towards the edge of the magma pipe at a location were the pipe on my z-level is wider then the one above after that I build 2-3 Fortifications before cutting through from above and building a floor.
I never had Fire Imps or stronger coming through my Fortifications.

I have seen however that Carp move happily to and from my moat through 4 Fortifications as they see fit.

In my experience using Fortifications for magma is no problem.

So far I have played many games, also quit many games, but I never had a dwarf want a specific type of item.
They always pick one of the items I have.
Cloth is a problem... having both silk and plant cloth is a must...  :)

It is good to know that it might happen.  :)

I think it is funny when children get a mood...
Barely out of his/her daipers and already a legendary crafter and constantly busy smoothing and engraving my fortress.
(yes all the children have to work for their booze!!!)

No, I know all the requirements for depot access (I've been playing DF since the first 3d version).

I was just wondering if there was a way to predetermine the direction/border traders and such would come from.

But since you can't, don't worry about it.
In some maps I actually take the time to channel 3 of 4 map edges to have only 1 tile... the unremovable edge tile.
Only even then I am afraid that both the smaller caravans and the imigrants mostly arrive randomly.
The only place the traders and imigrants dont enter the map is on the other side of a non-passable river.

Once I even had imigrants ariving on the channeled sides edge with a total of 6 tiles between trees... and then getting an ambush only shortly after the first imigrant arrives on the map on those same 6 tiles.
Was fun to watch, but not so fun to lose all the imigrants.

It would however be nice to be allowed to select an entry point, or entry edge to better predict the side the visitors are comming from.

What is wrong I have no idea, but I had the same thing happen to me a few times already with the Dwarves.
The merchants go insane, as well as the pack animals and both get annihilated by the guards after which the guards leave the area.

To me this happens when I am building 1 big staircase down to the bottom level and not when I am staying on the same level.
Havent had the problems with ramps, but I mostly use staircases.

When my dwarfs dig from lvl -1 downwards and find something on lvl-2 the game shows me lvl -3.

In my previous fortress I had build a well on top of a small murky pool and it was ignored as well, but I havent been able to determine what the reason for this was.
Could be the well was outside without a roof or outside period.
My dwarfs on mass ignored my "well" and "designated drink zone" and all went to the Sturgeon and Sea Lamprey infested river.
I lost 7 dwarfs before I even noticed that they ignored the well since I was checking on other stuff that was happening in the fortress.
