Dunno. Electric vehicle technology is pretty mature already.  It's not even really that expensive - I mean if they would just sell me a car without all the infotainment, ADAS computers, and other electrical things* that cost more than their mechanical equivalents, they would be able to get the price down to where I want it.

Also holy crap; average new car purchase transactions in the US are now over $41k!  This is so high that used car prices have gone up apparently 30% in the past year.  In fact it's a weird situation where some used cars (purchased in the last year or two) are now worth more than they were new!

Apparently most of the new car prices are, according to some news articles, due to the public's foolishness: "Another factor lifting the average car price: Car buyers' desire for more expensive trucks and SUVs, rather than less expensive sedans. Consumers also want more expensive features, such as automatic braking and lane departure warnings, which boost prices, too."  These are all things I DO NOT WANT.  Due to the general public demand, though, manufacturers aren't making what I want...  and cars are not really something you can get "to order" if you're middle-class.

The skyrocketing used car prices are not primarily due to current trends in new cars. They are more of a side effect to there not being any new cars in the first place. The computer chip shortage means they cannot make cars fast enough to meet demand.

In any case, consumer trends do explain the drive away from sedans and toward more features, but as much or nore of the blame lies with the automakers. Simply put, the profit margins on a loaded SUV are far higher than those of a basic sedan. So they used trend ata as an excuse to double down on the SUVs.

He doesn't have it anymore. It was last seen in the hands of an Azure City resistance member.

I dunno. The last person I feel is getting done dirty here is Cosby. He got exactly what he bargained for with _the DA he was dealing with._ Can someone provide a statute or precedent that says a new prosecutor is obligated to abide by the (completely fucking ridiculous deal) made by previous prosecutor?

The fundamental issue is that the later prosecution was done with the testimony that Cosby had provided under the condition that it not be used to prosecute him. This violated his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination. That testimony, and anything derived from it, is the platonic ideal of the "fruit of the poison tree" legal concept.

It is critical to remember that this isn't simply about Cosby. Few would have minded if the appeals court had simply ignored the issue. But that would have created precedent that could be used to justify deceptive deals with less-obviously-guilty suspects that possess much less ability to defend themselves. The legal system has many flaws with uneven protections, but you can't fix that by sawing away at the protections to weaken them further.

Bill Cosby is walking free after his conviction got overturned on appeal due to a non-prosecution deal made in 2005

Parents and younger sister are apparently cheering over this right now in the next room.

I have to admit I'm not that familiar with his case. Was the evidence hard, or just overwhelming amounts of circumstantial? Naturally the internet has, shall we say, a wide range of opinions.

I feel kinda bad, I think I've asked this before on this forum.

The evidence was solid, but the conviction was tossed on procedural grounds. Basically, the DA agreed to give Cosby immunity on that charge in exchange for testimony at the inevitable civil suit, then turned around and prosecuted him anyway. That's arguably a double-jeopardy violation, and is specifically against the laws of that state. The DA, Bruce Castor, was also Trump's defense attorney during the second impeachment where his total incompetence was on full display.

This is a good thing. Due process is vital to protecting the rights of the accused, and violating due process should be grounds for throwing a case out. Fortunately, the toxic deal only dealt with one of his accusers, and the statute of limitations has not expired on all of them. He could very easily be arrested and charged again. He is also not protected from additional civil suits.

I feel like the man was convicted, and shouldn't get out on what sounds like an unrelated, idiot technicality, but I'm still curious as to the circumstances.

Imagine a situation where somebody steals a car for a joyride. The DA strikes a plea deal to limit it to a misdemeanor with six months of community service, only to demand and receive twenty years from the judge. That would be a nearly identical situation to what happened in this case, and I don't think anybody would argue that it would be very bad. Letting the wall of protections erode because Cosby really does belong in jail hurts everybody.

Cuba has a pretty solid medical setup for the resources available to them. That doesn't necessarily equip them to handle something this new this fast.

There's considerable evidence that only a few plants are making a version of the Sputnik vaccine that actually works. Tests have shown that the stuff coming from South Korea (which is good) isn't remotely the same stuff others are getting. This is why there's major outbreaks in several countries with high vax rates.

With that in mind, I'd be very suspicious of a vaccine made in a country with even fewer resources. Cuba has a surprisingly capable homegrown research setup, but still.

There's a couple devices like that on the market, though the customization is not quite as great as initially suggested. The current focus is on ease of repair to reduce e-waste.

I wonder what moderate Republicans thinks about Joe Manchin for a freedoms 3rd party?

Manchin wouldn't be a good fit for creating a party calved-off from the GOP, precisely because he's already in that political space. He might wind up in such a party, but he does not bring enough to the table to give it appeal.

My qualm is really the assumption that, because they're representing themselves as female avatars instead of their real selves, their real selves must not be desirable to look at, and therefore they must all be fat, moreso because they're part of an industry that monetizes off of being cute female avatars instead of flesh and blood people, or that it's acceptable to lie about who you really are on the internet so of course they must be deceiving about their weight, or have enough weight to be deceptive about. I feel like I probably don't need to explain cultural weight expectations for women in entertainment or in general, culturally.

I'll take this as my reminder to quit kicking hornets' nests and leave it here, though.

Japan IS the country where a pop star got tracked down and sexually assaulted via the reflections in her eyes on social media. There's lots of legitimate reasons to disguise yourself in that sort of job.

All known methods of altering a virus leave fairly distinct traces. None of these are present in the virus responsible for COVID-19. The chances of it being created or enhanced in a lab are, for all intents and purposes, zero. It is a natural virus.

It is possible that the Wuhan lab was culturing and studying this natural virus for a number of reasons. Such research is extremely common. If this is the case, it is possible that there was a leak. As yet, there is no evidence to support it, and epidemiology of the pandemic is not consistent with a point source.

Biden isn't getting a lot of pushback because he is not using this as a cudgel or evasion. He is literally saying "well, you keep asking about this, so we will look into it."

House ownership (or rather, maintenance, or rather, why the fuck is there lead pipe in 2021) is cocking expensive.

Uh, those are illegal

Installing new lead pipes has been illegal for a long time, but replacing the millions of existing ones is a slow process. It requires specialized machinery to do so without requiring the destruction of the street, sidewalk, and possibly the house, and only a finite amount of such equipment exists. It is also rarely a priority because existing lead pipe is quite safe if undisturbed - a layer of scale builds up on the inside that prevents contamination of the water. It is only when something (such as the acidic river water pumped into Flint) disturbs this layer that replacing the pipe goes from a "Do this when major work is already being done" situation to a "fix this NOW" one.

One of the biggest issues I've been dealing with in an official capacity at work (I'm with the union) recently is transphobia. The older people mostly just don't understand the issue - they're toxic and hostile, but in an ignorant way rather than a malicious one. Most of the really bad shit -including threats of fatal violence- is coming from the youngest people.

Granted, we don't hire anybody under 21 for most positions, but that's still squarely in the late millenial/early gen-z demographic.
