Ok guys, I know this may sound strange but just listen in plz. Toady has been sick for quite a while... What if he is in fact not sick at all? Just gone -- Abducted! Dwarf fortress in its current version is astounding in its originality and intense detail which surpasses most, nay -- all -- other games in the present world. In its current version. But, then we think, wait! Toady has almost finished his NEXT version. WTF. Martians, noticing the intense pulses of ingeniosity resonating from  Toady's fingernails, took who they thought was the most intelligent member of the human species back to their homeplanet to exhibit in a zoo! We will be forever doomed to endure the current version of DF and a perpetual sense of trust that Toady will soon be cured from his "sickness" so that he can release the new version. Lament my dwarves  :'(

You are a sad, strange little internet thing.

Doesn't matter, they just wouldn't want the world to know they didn't do it first.

Just a little testing left to do, but I'm pretty sure I finally got the goblin horde working. It took LITTERSIZE 50:100 and KILL FACTION MEMBER: UNTHINKABLE, but it seems to be working. If this pans out, I'll start the new thread.

Should I just pick a site and profile?

Gunpowder.

In the 1400s, it was there yes, but it wasn't as widely used and thus, hard to acquire, and even harder to learn how to make. So in this sense i would say gunpowder should come in the pure form, with it being EXTREMELY valuable and only obtainable from traders or to take with you on embark, and then you have to have a philosopher find out how to make it, and then how to make it into dynamite. Though this philosopher's mood would have to be ecstatic for the duration of research.

How about making it only obtainable by trading with the Humans? Which would sort of respresent how Europe got it's gunpowder by trading with the Chinese (mostly).

Huh? Europe didn't use gunpowder until Bacon cracked the formula, and, not only was it almost entirely domestically produced, due their refusal to wet the ingredients, it was usually mad on the battlefield.

What about flashing the tile(s) currently selected?

I was considering adding a littersize to their raws, but demurdering them might work.

zwei, why do you need the "wedge" at all. Wouldn't it be easier and less intrusive simply to highlight or outline whatever's being examined?

That's why, in my thread on the subject, I suggested abstract distances within one tile, where a longer weapon gives an edge in melee combat unless the range is too short.

IMO, the best way to handle most of these things would be to let them "evolve" into the code. If such things are good for the game, eventually it will get to the point where the lack of such is too glaring an omisson, or it wi take extra effort for Toady to prevent, similar to how he would have to add in extra code to keep children from being brually killed.
