I don't build for efficiency anyway. But do you really think we'll be able to get an army ready by the first winter (the earliest Orcs can siege) if we don't forge anything until then?

Edit: I was intending on standard year/week turns.

One of my immigrants from the first wave had a masonry mood. I couldn't understand at first how he started construction so quick, as the masonry shop he grabbed wasn't in use at the time. Turned out he went to the ore stockpile and grabbed a chunk of truesilver (civ forge mithril ore.) From that one peice of stone, he created a truesilver coffer worth 180000. I had 14 dwarves at the time.


Now to prepare for the hordes of orcs, and worse, migrants.

I must say, the dwarves of this fortress work very well! I doubt any other fortress could have thrown up such a magnificent ballroom within the timeframe they seem to have.


I also had them pave the bottom of the watergarden for good measure, since it'd be nice to have it filled with water during events. I pulled the lever myself and watched the water rush forth!

Yeah, the pets are good, but the elves, high elves and vamari should all trade, so we should get plenty of those, and I don't want to cripple our ability to arm a few dwarves in case the orcs show up early. Probably won't bring the axes, though, because they just cost too much for something you can readily make on site (simply bring all the ingredients for a few bars of steel. 2xbitco, 6xiron ore 6xflux will get 6 axes for less than the price of one.), so that will free up some points for livestock.

A bower went fey and made a nondescript artifact pine crossbow somewhat early in the construction of a surface fortress.  Oddly my first artifact crossbow.  Calculating weather it would be better for my crossbowmen to have masterwork wood and bone crossbows or average steel ones.

I should probably make the decision soon, I now have 100 hippoes in the major river directly north of the fortress and I'm starting to see slowdown.  The hippo genocide must happen before it's too late.

Crossbow material only affects damage in melee, while quality has a significant affect on ranged capability, so the materwork wood/bone ones would probably be better.

Okay, I've got it down to 2x6, which is the smallest I can go and still be able to embark. Otherwise essentially the same site.

I've found a decent site. It's got magma, running water, all surviving races as neighbors (the jawas are extinct), and I *think* it has hfs. Not sure how to tell for sure.



It's a little large though. I'm not certain where the magma is, so I extended it a bit to touch the river.

If this is to everyone's liking, we can discuss rules, embark setup, and turn order.
