Ingiz's Journal:  1st Granite 1051
Who does he think he is?  Deon elected himself expedition leader while we were out scavanging for supplies, and now he claims that by ancient law he can only be replaced after a sign from the gods.  Isn't that why we fled?  To get away from those rusted shackles of buracracy.....  To find someplace that hasn't been shaped by the rigid constructions of the priesthood.....     To find someplace where we can reforge our souls and find out what the gods have in store for us.......     But no.   More of the same petty crap we put up with at the mountain home.  I'm going to grab my pick and get to work digging us out a home.  Maybe by the time I get done DoomPotato and Hazey Jane will have found some plants, brewed them, and I can get drunk on something that doesn't taste of mushroom.  And Deon...he will get what's coming to him.

Deon's Journal:  1st Granite 1051
We will be the first dwarves in a thousand years to commmune directly with the gods without being priests, and I, Deon am the grand architect of this plan.  I'm so smart and so wise.  If the other dwarves follow my exact commands, we shall be sure to succeed.  They aren't too bright though, so I'll have to keep a close eye on them.  Especially Hazey Jane and OmnipotentGrue.  Those two are highly suspicious.

Hazey Jane's Journal:  1st Granite 1051
Someone figured it out.  The note tucked under my arm while I was sleeping.  I just don't know how someone figured out that I am a woman.  I'd been able to keep this secret hidden since shortly after I grew my first whiskers.  Maybe I should never have...  But no!  All of the priests of  Girtol the Ferries of Tricking were men.  All I have ever wanted was to learn more about and grow closer to him.  I must go.  I have work to do.

OmnipotentGrue's Journal:  1st Granite 1051
So hungry!  Hate everyone!  No time to journal.  Must start fishing!

(Well not everyone, but OmnipotentGrue does have some issues.)

Therleth Thimshure's Journal:  1st Granite 1051
Why did we stop here?  There isn't anything tasty around for me to kill.  There are bones everywhere.  Even the trees and shrubs are dead.  Its creepy, downright creepy.  I'm pretty sure our skilled architect got us lost.  Did that bone move on its own?

DoomPotato's Journal:  1st Granite 1051
Awesome!  They totally fell for it!  I switched the maps around and now we are settling someplace without any plants to gather.  Everyone else is going to be busy with their specialty, so I'll be able to spend some quality time with Hazey jane.  If you know what I mean.  Wait.  No one reads this but me.  At least they had better not, or I'd be in trouble.  So I guess I mean quality time....if I know what I mean.  And I do. And its awesome!

Oh I like to chop and chop and burn..
Wood and elves each take their turn.
There was cracking, screaming, sizzling too..
Silent now, I'll drink my brew.

I'm going to try my hand at a community fort with the emergent version.

http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=57683.0

Haven't noticed any unworkable bugs or annoying crashes yet.  Come on over if you feel like claiming a dwarf.

Hopefully this community fort will work better than the last one I tried.  That one was just taking off when a freak power surge hit my neighborhood and fried every part of my computer.  That was the only time I've actually seen smoke come out of a desktop.

Fort Info:
First the standard stuff
1.  I've claimed one dwarf.  Every one else is up for grabs.  If you have any preferences as far as traits or likes/dislikes, I'll keep them in mind, but no promises.
2.  I'll be listing the unclaimed dwarves.  Their genders, professions, and some important skills.
3.  If you claim a dwarf, I'll post the description.  I'll also have the original 7 posted.
4.  Feel free to journal for your dwarf, but please spoiler the text.  Keep in mind that these are non-canon
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
and I may also be journaling from your dwarf's pov, especially if they get elected mayor.
5.  If you claim a dwarf, pick a name, or I'll use your profile name or some variation.

Now for some unusual stuff
1.  The original seven are in a cult.  They will be sealed away from the outside world.  An outside dwarf could be invited in if they are worthy.  An epic fight, making a cool artifact, or something else entirely could get someone invited inside.  Let me know if you think someone is worthy.
2.  For the sake of the story, noncultists are not capable of altering any cultist constructions unless abandoned.
3.  Since I'm using Genesis mod, there are a wide variety of castes that dramatically inluence gameplay.  While you will know the castes of any claimed dwarves or cultists via the description images, I'm keeping migrant caste secret until they are claimed.

Now for the dwarves:

This is a saga of survival and glory.  (And likely of creepy dwarven incest, but mostly a saga of survival and glory.)

Six males and one female travel into the unknown.

What was their crime? From what unjust punishment did they flee?

They come from a dwarven religious kingdom, where the power is really held by the high priests.

According to these, the crime is treason and heresy.  The punishment is death.

Desperate to survive, our heroes go into the wilderness.

They come across the perfect site to settle in the tropics.  But perfect to whom?

Two strips of land.....one haunted....the other terrifying.  A joyful freshwater lake running through the center.

The ancient maps say that in this area, magma is not very deep.

Their mission:  Survive, seal themselves away, build a temple to glorify their gods, procreate, and seek the deeps.

But which will be more difficult?  Staying alive in a harsh, evil land?

Or surviving the tensions threatening to tear their group apart?

But there is more.  As the news of this new cult spreads across the land, other dwarves will come seeking entry.  These dwarves will be forced to live outside the tower on whatever scraps the tower dwarves deign to give them.  Only those who prove themselves worthy with truely heroic deeds will be allowed entry into the tower.

The beginning:

I've done some experimenting trying to figure out the bug that makes artifact items into dark lignite.  Right now wood, bone, and shell based artifacts turn into dark lignite in my games.  They are lost imediately, and the creator of the artifact gets blacklung disease.  It seems that the game looks for the first inorganic file in alphabetical order.  Then the game selects the first material in that list.  So you could set up a dummy material that is not used anywhere else in a file named inorganic_artifact.txt, and until Toady fixes the bug in the main game, we wouldn't have exploding artifacts.

With 1.7, I've got two expedition leaders.  Only one shows up on the noble screen as the leader, but both have expedition leader as their profession.

247
Nish is Demonic Spoon's older sister...the planter's (and now military commander) daughter.  Anyways, I thought only babys would die of thirst, not dwarven children.

Upload in progress

Here it is.

I decided to start it again to try to not screw up the mayor, and it was a success.  Both dwarves appear able to pick up equipment.  I've left them in a squad, but do not let them train or they will stop working again.  I'm going to throw up some beds in a very temporary sleeping area and let some of the mining designations get dug out, then will be uploading.  I'm also going to grab the only unclaimed dwarven child as my own dwarf.

No crashes while I've been playing, and I;m getting around 30 FPS.

249
Only problem is in getting the planter to mine, I seem to have broken the mayor.  He won't do a thing.  Just stands there.  He has no job, but it shows zero idlers.

250
I was able to get the planter to grab a pick and mine by putting her in a squad, assigning her a pick, having her be the arsenal dwarf, and stationing her somewhere.  When I then unstationed her and removed her from the military she mined.

251
I downloaded it as well, just to check it out.  It is that awesome.

The planter appears perfectly capable.  Got her to pick up an axe to chop some logs for beds.  Still can't get anyone to grab a pick.  I'm going to try to assign the planter as the arsenal dwarf, throw both adults in the military and assign the mayor a pick.  Will let you know if it works.

Wow!  Cannon Fodder for the one hit kill.

And now that the competition is going I'll reveal my backup contestant if The Shadow had been DQ'ed before the competition.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

In tests The Shadow only lives a few moments against this beauty.

Edit:  I believe I have 7 points remaining now.  I shall save them.  In the event that The Shadow wins his next fight, I shall request a silk mask.

253
I don't believe I mentioned anything about dwelves.

254
I'll take the baby if it was born in the fort, otherwise I'll take the first child born.  Leave the name whatever it is, or change it to whoever the parent's lastname has become.

Professon:  The Chosen One?

Backstory:  Born on a night with a blood red comet in the sky, earthquakes, animals born with several heads, vocanos erupting, etc.   The baby is believed to be the one to fulfill an ancient prophesy written in blood.  If true the child will either destroy the dwarves or cause a new empire to rise.

255
If you make stone beds, it ignores the economic stone list.  I'm getting native copper, bauxite, and limestone beds, and they are definately marked red on the list.
