DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Goblin's leg severed by a bronze bolt?
« on: October 10, 2010, 06:25:03 pm »
Bolts only count as edged weapons. Their small size only reduces their probability of a severing injury. Of course, the whole combat system could use a little work-- I recall a tale of a goblin who had both ears shot off with one bolt, without injuring the brain.

Just think about how that works.
[Insert joke about the grassy knoll here]

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Metal Doors?
« on: October 10, 2010, 02:10:56 pm »
One big - and oft overlooked - advantage of fancy metal doors is that putting a few at frequently traveled locations, such as the entrance to booze stockpiles, can result in good thoughts from dwarves seeing the fancy doors.  Because even if your child just got savagely beaten to death in a room rigged to hit everything inside it with sticks in order to train them in armor use, having a nice drink in a dining room with a brass floodgate in the center and a gold door covered with opals and agate will cheer you right up.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Goblin's leg severed by a bronze bolt?
« on: October 10, 2010, 02:02:48 pm »
Goblins must have really scrawny arms and legs.  I just had a goblin get their leg severed by a crossbow trap a moment before my guards arrived and beat her to death with steel truncheons.

154
Well...  I suppose the good news is since their diplomat died instantly, they'll just wander into my traps and die.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What is your main export?

Does it matter? With one dwarf on stoncrafting you can take everything useful on any caravan that arrives so what's the point? If you really want to crank out high value goods go for prepared food. That feels like cheating though. Who would pay that much for a meal and what would it even taste like after a 2 month journey?
I never understood people with this mindset until I realized that most players probably don't create trade agreements by scrolling down to the 'Cut gems' screen and then holding down and right for about two minutes.  It takes an awful lot of stone to make 130k dwarfbucks worth of trade goods.

...wut?

The human diplomat Xidel Ekoapsong arrived, and instantly fell over, dead.  No combat report, no goblins present.  I actually went 'WHUT' so hard the first time that I reloaded the save and it happened AGAIN.

Has anyone else experienced mayors that die instantly on a map with no apparent heat issues?

Sadly, cages cannot be decorated with gems as far as I am aware.

That's nothing.  I have a dwarf that keeps making statues of himself embracing magma men.  Two and three at a time, even.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: The Marble Wall
« on: October 03, 2010, 01:50:46 am »
Since there's (apparently) some small amount of interest in this project still, I'm uploading a save so people can wander around in Adventurer mode (which should be fun), check it out in Stonesense for themselves (after re-discovering the location, of course) and such.  Also uploaded some screenshots of the living area, and the east/west segments of the wall.

[Update]
Save located at the bottom of the first post.

It would be fun if you could set it so only kittens explode.  It would mean that once a year, all of your female cats suddenly explode if there are any male cats around.

And the funny part is it would still help forts last longer.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Best. Statue. Ever.
« on: October 02, 2010, 08:57:13 pm »
I just got a statue of two historical figures in war.

The artwork relates to the killing of the dwarf Meng Armorslipped the Tenderness of Friends by the dwarf Mato Malicecurl the Hellish Talon of Rags in Dradesin in the Distinct Tower in 144 during ARist Monang, "The Assault of Drilling."

the Tenderness of Friends vs the Hellish Talon of Rags.  I can just imagine that one of the dwarves is depicted as bending down to pick a rope reed for his weaver friends, with the other leaping at him with a blood-crazed expression and a battle axe.

I once had a amphibianman in the caverns beneath my fortress (I'd sealed off the caverns because they were apparently full of forgotten beasts) who was locked in a three year duel with a forgotten beast.  Two other FB's had wandered into him during that time and he'd killed both of them, earning his black cap spear and shield names.

The best part of it was the FB he was fighting against was ravening, so every once in a while I would get messages of "FB has become enraged!" and the sounds of their epic struggle echoed throughout the fortress.

The marksmen aren't bugged, it just forces you to use live targets to train.

Exactly as it should be.

I know that gem windows can substitute as an anchor for doorways, although it can't start as such.  Useful information if you want to frame a door with windows - although you do have to build a wall section to put the door up, you can deconstruct it later and the windows will support it.

Not much advice, but it's something.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Most valuable non-artifact item you've made?
« on: September 06, 2010, 07:04:39 pm »
If I could find which tomb I put it in I'd tell you.  I have a TON of gold statues.

Edit: Found it.  Masterwork Gold Statue (9000) + 2 Masterwork red zircon decorations (1200 each) +  one Exceptional red zircon decoration (500) = 11900.  That's almost three times more valuable as my least valuable artifact (an obsidian piccolo).  I used the over 9000 joke because the statue was worth 9000.  I suppose I could go back and add more decorations...
no u.

You can only encrust one instance of each gem type onto a single item.

I remember at one point in DF pre-2010, I had a platinum statue encrusted with (imported) clear/red/blue/green/faint yellow diamonds, star ruby/sapphire, rubies, emeralds, etc etc...  that ended up with the value upwards of 100k dwarfbucks.  It made for a snazzy dining room.
