You need to carve a barracks into the walls so you have the necessary reserve forces to defend yourself.  Expand by building actual bedrooms!

Does this happen in DF mode, too?
If I go to kill the titan in Adventure mode, will I have to fight them all?
Should I be hiding?

There have been so many of these threads in the past...

I build horizontally.
I normally build my stockpiles and/or workshops on my first level so I can expand them vertically if they get full.
Second level is whichever isn't on the first level. Or bedrooms if they're both on the first level.
Third level is bedrooms or coffins.

And I throw in my barracks wherever. :D

Be careful, you're mixing your excessively violent and suicidally bleak gaming settings.  In DF, it's 7 alcoholic squats against an unforgiving world, psychotic clowns and an uncaring and fickle player.  In 40K, it's uncounted billions with an unforgiving and uncaring god-emperor (well, mostly his priests and bureaucrats) against psychotic and fickle xenos, heretics and traitors.  Granted, the characters are doomed in both settings, but you need to keep the wild-eyed zealotry in the correct game...  ;)

edit: The elves in both settings deserve to die slow-ish.  Also note that the 40K universe couldn't handle the dwarfs, and they were expunged...
