DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?

Had 2 funny baby related deaths today. A mother gave birth while training in a danger room. To say the least the baby did not make it. Dwarven abotion I guess The mother had a tantrum and kicked a dog breaking it's lower spine. She was tossed in jail and I kid you not the baby came back as a ghost and killed her in her cell. Deathworked has to be the most interesting fort I have played! The dog is still alive, update when the dog dies.

Well my fort DeathWorked(good name considering...) has been set up completely. Had one mining related death due to a cave-in. 5 dwarfs died due to a really bad infection that spread quickly. They where sealed off in the hospital till they died. Made a new hospital so I don't have to worry about the bodies exposing other dwarfs to that nasty thing. And the last bit of excitement came from many ambushes happening at once. First was kolbolds, they killed my guard dogs quickly but the floodgates cut off their entrance to my fort. Just after that a gabbo ambush appeared and started fighting the kolbolds. That happened 3 more times but in the end I got lots of metal to melt and not one dwarf was hurt at all. Now I am trying to get a breeding pair of elephants or black bears from the elfs. I got one of each.

After a kolbold ambush that left 3 dead and one running around with an arrow in his guts, I have decided to build a danger room to train up my army. As it stands I have one dwarf to fight everything. The next wave of migrants all get to become my new army.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: natural magma pressure

Have you gotten a cave-in that you did not cause? Might have been a natural magma piston that forced the magma up there.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Should I let these ghosts haunt my dwarfs?
« on: January 07, 2011, 02:53:01 am »
I got 3 ghosts haunting my current fort. I can not find the bodies to bury. 2 of the ghosts just haunt one dwarf at a time, nothing hard to deal with with lots of expensive stuff in their rooms. The other ghost has killed 2 dwarfs already. Should I let them just all die to the ghosts? It's that or a magma flood.

What furniture can go in a room to make dwarfs happy? Trying to stop a soon to be tantrum spiral.

I have had great luck by killing them with swords. A scimitar can take off their legs easy and then they become slow. Just pick them off after that.

Above ground forts with no mining is fun. Just make sure you have a place where you can get lots of wood.
I like Levi's tower idea...Think I'm going to do this for my next fort.

I just turn the dwarfs room in to a tomb after they die. It's already decorated and and it save me from having to dig more shit out.

Well I got the walls built up. Lost one dwarf to a zombie croc. It was my hunter so I am continuing on. Got the entrance to the fort set up with some boulder traps to get started, and I can flood the hallway as well in case a trapavoid monster comes in. I am now working towers so I can set up ballistas. Oh and a miner killed a giant cougar that I wanted to capture.

Now that sounds like fun fish!

As stated above I want to make an above ground fort with no army. My basic defense will be war dogs and whatever cool things the elves bring me. Shutting my fort off is not an option because that is boring as hell. I am no good with magma but I have had many successful traps made with water including a steam trap using a burning bin of charcoal. Anytime I try to use magma it overflows and destroys a good chunk of my forts. Any good, over elaborate traps would be great. Also any tips on using magma would be helpful.
