Sorry, I've played too much ADOM.  In ADOM they are called corruption instead of mutations.

First win with a melee type, MiBr.  Learning when to rage and when to run was a tough thing. Also finding rPois was rough.  Bought a artifact axe in hopes of finding one in a trove.  I finally get lucky and rPois leather armour and clear swamps and get a Swamp Dragon Armor that was my primary armor till I found Pearl Dragon Armour  :D.  I got cast to the Abyss on D27 by a draconian who just happened to have a distortion brand whip.  While in the Abyss I figure I might as well get the rune since I was dominating all the stuff there.  Zot 3 gave me blurry eyes.  Since I didn't want a Zot trap to end my career I head back to my lair stash and grab a potion of corruption and my 3 cures.  I hope I can at least dilute out my list of corruptions to keep a beneficial one (like resist corruption 1 or +2 str).  Since I had 2 extra potions and no top tier mutations I figure I'll give Slime a try.  No shining eyes caught me with my pants down (or with my resist corrosion amulet rather) so I get the rune without any corruption or item destruction.  Orb run was uneventful.  I just run away from any Pan lord I found.

The 4 unique Pan lords are down.  Cerebov was a huge PITA!  I do have a question.  Do random Pan lords drop runes or do I have to find it in vaults?

Stats have absolutely no affect on how quickly skills are raised. That's determined solely by aptitude. Who's telling you this stuff?

I thought better stats meant you payed less for the associated skills.  An int 30 will raise spellcasting faster than an int 20 with the same aptitude.

My Naga Transmuter is liking the huge stats he gets with Chei.  High int for casting spells more easily and high str for smacking stuff.  Dex is okay for the EV, so not a total loss.  I imagine that a demigod would be the same.  Just trade slow move speed and slouch/step from time for slightly worse aptitudes.

Scew Antaeus! He is a real pain.  Didn't realize he was a titan and threw lighting spells at me.  Had to teleport away and sacrifice my lich form's extra rC+ for statue's rE+.  Also more liberal use of Haunt helped.  Then I had a Xom moment.  As I had the exit back to Vestibule in sight, evolution gives me fire breath 1.

Any advice before tackling Gehenna?  All that hellfire sounds scary and I won't be able to use statue form or else I'm down from rF+++ to rF+.

My Chei worshipping Naga Transmuter just did a 4 rune run for my second win.  The game didn't give me a necronomicon, a dragon form book, mutation resistance, or corrosion resistance.  I suppose I could have switched gods for the books, but wasn't feeling it.  Chei is pretty decent imho.  The huge stat boost really helps you save EXP spending on skills and makes the hybrid build so much more viable.  Plus breaking into vaults 8 was so easy.  3 slouches and all but a titan and 2 guards were dead.  Getting banished to the abyss while heading up with the orb was a minor hindrance.  However I was a pretty big beast at that point.

Got my first win.  Did wizard with random race and got a Draconian.  Aside from limited helms and no armor, he seemed pretty good.  Sif gave me a lot of good attack spells early, but she held out on deflect missiles for a while.  Firestorm made vaults 5 entry pretty easy.  4x casts when hasted cleared out the welcoming committee before they could get close to me  :D.  Necromutation + Firestorm made crypts and tomb a breeze.

A few close calls.  Not long after entering elf 5, I got banished to the abyss.  I thought it would be yet another dead toon, but fly + swiftness got me away from everything.   Mara almost did me in, but my 3rd attempt at killing him went well when he ate 2x Orbs of Destruction.  Tomb 1 gave me an inconvenient slow curse and lots of angry summons after a fire storm killed like 3 mummies at once.  Teleport put me in the middle of them, but the next one dropped me in  a safe spot.

Since I wanted a win and not to learn more than just what zot 5 looks like, I never bothered with any of Pand or the Hell branches.  6/15 runes collected.

Back in a 40d community fort, I had my squad pretty much all go take a break when a goblin siege showed up.  My lone axedwarf proceeded to kill the entire siege single handedly.  Her only injury out of the whole thing was a broken leg as I recall.

I don't like calling it murder.  I prefer to call them live fire exercises.

Make sure you have enough beds, coffers, and traction benches.  Also make sure you've appointed a cheif medical dwarf and have enough doctors with all the relevant skills enabled (a big pitfall there).  Finally double check to make sure you have enough cloth, thread, and other products for the hospital.
