How do I stockpile adamantine strands?

My dwarves are putting it in to a bin in one of my cloth stockpiles, but when I have a look in the bin, I can't see the strands.  I'd rather be able to see them, just for peace of mind.
Try making a cloth stockpile set to not accept anything and make it take from all your other cloth piles. Adamantine isn't listed, so your dwarves will only put that in the new pile and it'll be easier to see without all the pig tail junk on top of it.

Build the cages next to a ledge over the room then designate them to be dumped off the closest ledge using a pit zone.

First year - no caravan. Second year - no caravan and even no migrants. My civ "has no important leaders". They gone forever?
I've seen the caravan not come in early years sometimes. It might be because of your created wealth. Try smoothing and engraving all your walls and telling a craftsdwarf to make lots and lots of stuff.

Did you get any migrants on the first year? If you did the caravan not coming would be a bug.

EDIT:
First year - no caravan. Second year - no caravan and even no migrants. My civ "has no important leaders". They gone forever?

The bug of getting caravans even after your civ is extinct was fixed? If you don't have a civ, abandoning a fort and starting a new one should cause your dwarves to kickstart the civ, allowing immigrants to be inexplicably created out of thin air at the edge of your map again.

DF Suggestions / Re: Lock mouse X/Y toggle in designation.

Some people prefer the mouse and in the end mouse support will need to be improved for the interface upgrade (granted, that's a few years from now, but eventually.)

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: order war animals around?
« on: June 24, 2010, 04:17:31 pm »
Draft a dwarf you don't need into the military and assign all your animals to him then tell him to run into the middle of the invaders. The pets will follow him into the fray.

Another option is to wait until they leave, then build a cage at the entrance to your fort connected to a lever. You can release the animals from there. You generally need at least 20 of most animals to win against an armoured force though.

I'm using Deon's Genesis but nothing else. I'll probably just have to reembark until I get some dwarves that don't suddenly decide they hate each other after finishing months of traveling together.

The problem is they start freaking out before I even get a chance to start setting up beds and statues. I was only halfway done digging out the first floor of the fort when the tantrums started.

New fort, and withing the first month five of my starting seven are tantruming because of grudges. How do I stop dwarves from randomly trying to kill each other?

Multiple animals can be stored in one cage, but cage traps can only be triggered once and then need to be replaced.

Unless he told the dwarves to move the creatures, they would still be in separate cages. Dwarves won't arm a trap with a cage that already has something in it.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: sword spear or axe?
« on: June 24, 2010, 01:18:18 am »
With everybody recommending axes, I've got to speak up for the underappreciated spear.  You're not going to destroy a body-and-wings blob with an axe, but with a spear, you might just destroy its brain.

But for goblins and beasties, yeah, axe all the way.
Actually, chances are the spear will get stuck within the first five hits, then the dwarf will die trying to pull it out. Even after nerfed marksmanship the crossbow is still more effective.

Are they all in the same cage? Traps can only be loaded with empty cages, so if it's the same cage there's definitely a bug.

Many, many warthogs caught in cage traps. However they don't show up in the animals tab for easy slaughtering/butcher.  Do I have to pit them all or is there any easy way to designate them for slaughter?
thanks
Try taming them at a kennel first. I don't think you can slaughter wild animals. If you don't want to tame them, you can pit them then assign a dwarf to hunt and he might kill them for you.

EDIT: My question: Does anyone know much about DF genetics? does the size of a creature in its description really affect butchering returns? Do genetics really work well enough to create a race of just ultra-mighty dogs?

cave in your caravan along with 6 dwarfs, only problem is the one left might be upset.
If you kill them before anyone makes friends, no one will care. It's just like slaughtering a whole wave of immigrants at the front gate, people will just watch through the fortifications with their popcorn kitten tallow biscuits.

Try drafting 5 and using the sixth to cause a cave in on them by digging out a supporting pillar.

See if you can get a couple dwarves harvesting any shrubs on the map with d->p and set your woodworker to make barrels on repeat for brewing. Brewing doesn't need water, and once the ice forms in autumn, there's nothing you can do to stop it. I recently lost 2 forts to forgetting to prepare for the big freeze. Next time, you should assign a herbalist from your starting seven and start foraging right from day one until you can get some wild strawberries or set up an underground farm.

Another option is to start digging straight down as fast as you can in the hopes of hitting the first cavern or an aquifer, as those never freeze.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Battleaxes one or two handed?
« on: June 23, 2010, 01:06:31 am »
they're 2-handed, as shown by being wielded with a 'multigrasp' in inventory. If you try hard enough, you might be able to get the dwarves to hold the shields by their left upper leg or something, it'll work just as well.
